Unit Set Up and Different Formats
I'm looking for a preferred unit set up defined. Is there some standard? There are many different formats and I'd like to find out what they are intended for in a typical usage. The reason being is that besides from being a typical drive to here/there, I'm also a hiker... and in an emergency what is preferred?
So in the US, typical use that I see are:
lat/long
decimal degrees

The Land of Lincoln - Springfield, IL
I am going to be taking a weekend trip to Springfield, IL just to see some of the Lincoln museums, etc. I did not see any custom POIs for this area. Did i miss them in my search. I thought sure this tourist area would have some sites mapped out.

website (for round barns & covered bridges)
For the people that are into round barns and covered bridges, I ran across this site. You can download csv files for many of the states and load them into the Garmins without doing any editing. Really nice site.

Suggestion for new GPS owners
Forgive me if this has been discussed already, but I thought it would be a good thing to remind new GPS owners to back up their GPS before they do anything to it.
I'm a meticulous kind of guy so I take a lot of care in getting my GPS set up right. I put a screen protector on the screen immediately after I pull off the factory screen sticker, and I back up the GPS.

Making digital maps more current and accurate
One of the more common comments heard relates to the accuracy of the digital maps used in our units. Here is an article regarding work being done in Europe to overcome some of the issues around having the most current information.

Hobbies
I thought it would be neat to see what folks hobbies are. Who knew that my Nuvi would turn into another one.
Most of mine are outdoor related hobbies. I love fishing, hunting, gardening, and almost anything that involves guns.

GPS units have become so cheap, I had to pick up another one
I'm amazed at how far and how fast prices have fallen on GPS units.
I still remember in 2006 when I paid over $350 for a Garmin C320 with very limited internal memory.
Just a couple of days ago I could not pass up on a cheap GPS, a TomTom 125 for $80 with free case from Staples.

When to buy a new map
I have a 2009 map and now I see they have a 2009.1 available. wouldn't it make more sense for me to wait until the 2010 map comes out? What are your thoughts?

Registered vs active vs General maitainers
Hi Miss POI,
I saw the post about the most active users and, out of curiosity, I was wondering if you'd be willing to share with us the break down of the site's membership:
- Registered:
- Active Members:
- General Maintainers:
- POI contributor:
Just curious, but either way, we can see that this community is alive and well.
Regards
Simon

Contributors of the week 2009-01-26
This week we are recognizing Aophiuchus and Scubazar.
Aophiuchus, You are such a great guy, we really love having you as one of our outstanding leaders in this community. It is nice to have you in charge of one of our largest projects.
Scubazar, this week you have helped me clean up the redlight file for your area. I really appreciate all of your input and legwork.

Height, Propane and Tunnel Restrictions
The wife and I RV for 4 to 6 months a year. Our rig is 145 inches tall, and 8ft 6in wide and carries about 10 gallons of propane. Having road notifications of limitations would extremely helpful. Is there anything out there short of buying another GPS? We have 4 Garmins now with the latest being a 760.
Thanks
Bill
