we are in USA (TN and other states arround TN) for holidays in May/June and in the manual of our garmin nuvi we read something about usage of gps in cars in USA.
So, we want to ask, if it´s legal to put our gps on the front window of our rental car or if it is illegal???
In the internet we just found some information about California and Minnesota where this seems to be illegal - but we don´t know if these are really all of the US states!?!?
Tanks for your help and greetings from germany
California Vehicle Code Section 26708:
"A portable Global Positioning System (GPS), which may be mounted in a 7-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield farthest removed from the driver or in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver, if the system is used only for door-to-door navigation while the motor vehicle is being operated and outside of an airbag deployment zone."
In TN there is no law that I know of regarding mounting your GPS on your windshield. I am in East TN and use mine daily with no issues. Also I see many other people with GPS devices mounted in their windshields. As for states surrounding TN (GA, NC, KY, AL, MS, AR, MO, VA) I would only be concerned with VA. The Commonwealth of Virginia generally has stricter driving laws compared to the other states listed.
One thing people do not consider about putting objects in the windshield is the effect that the object has in a wreck. Loose items in vehicles can become lethal projectiles that cause an injury or death that would normally not have happened.
Enjoy your travels. There are many interesting and historic places to visit in Tennessee.
I've wondered about that myself. I know we can't do it here in Canada (that's why mine is mounted to the passenger side visor). But I go to Michigan, Illinois and Ohio a lot and I don't know the state laws.
But I don't give it much thought. If the moron beside me is going to talk on their cell, then there's nothing wrong with getting navigation help. And it's not like I'm driving down the road watching the thing update every second.
I'm in CA and have mine on top of the middle of the dashboard. I could probably rotate the suction mount around and stick it to the window and the GPS would still be in the same location... At least I'm legal, it's not mounted to the windshield!
and thanks for all of you answers.
CU in the US in a few days
Enjoy your trip and watch out for speed cams.

I see that you also have an eTrex Vista. Are you heading to TN for GW VII?
Mounting anything on the front windshield (except an I-PASS by the rear view mirror)is illegal. I recommend the vent mount they sell. It works really well for me.
The way I understand it (from Garmin) it's only CA & MN which ban sticking things on inside of Windshields.
some are having issues with the vent mounts as causing the unit to be too hot/cold and in some cases damaging the vent itself beware
As blocks visibility everywhere if they want to give you ticket they can
Minnesota & California, then add Virgina just because that state has whacked laws when it comes to anything pertaining to having one up on the road.
As of January 1, 2009, Minnesota is the only state with an outright ban against attaching GPS devices to any point on your windshield.
Global Positioning Systems (GPS), may be mounted in a 7-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield furthest removed from the driver or in a 5-inch square in the lower corner of the windshield nearest to the driver
That is a good question. you dont want to impede your view or it could be illegal. it is like wearing sunglasses at night while driving is that illegal too? forums like http://www.isitlegalto.com may offer some more insights and better address this concern.
