Creating POI files

Can I make custom POI display a phone no. so they function like the pre-loaded PIO's so when the custom PIO is diplayed I see the phone icon so I can call using the bluetooth to my phone.

Hello new to this site and GPS units for that matter. I have just purchased a Garmin Streetpilot i5. It came already loaded with the entire US map and x number of POIs. I would like to make my own custom POIs using Excel and the Garmin POI loader. I think I understand how to do that, but my question is how will these custom POIs get loaded onto my unit?

I'm in the process of creating my own version of AM/FM radio station files from the data at Roadnotes.com. I'm doing individual files of each state of interest to me and I was wondering if there was any interest in this type file as opposed to one huge file?

I just wondered if you have a LARGE POI file (and I have no idea how large), would it help the GPS be more efficient if one sorted the file, say buy latitude and then longitude (or vice-versa)?

OK, so I created a poi file for Colorado ski areas using Mapsource and saving as .gpx file, it contains (I think) 37 locations.

I have no trouble associating a (1) .jpg using the waypoints properties, file/url association method. (naming .jpg same as poi file)

But..... what if I want to associate a different .jpg for each of the 37 locations in the poi file??

Would someone out there be able to post a POI list of New Jersy/New York malls.

My wife and I like to venture out and this list would be real easy if posted to my Garmin c340.

The article on manually crating a POI is good. However, I hate wqorking with spreadsheets. Does anyone know of a freeware software program that lets you easily create POIs?

This is, in a nutshell, how I am creating my POI files. If there is an easier way that you guys see, let me know. This may be useful to those that haven't done one yet. I figured this out on my own, so trust me, if I can do it anyone can. A basic knowledge of MS Excel is needed. I am not a technical writer so I apologize if this confuses

i created a poi that will alert me of my speed when i get to that spot . i used the garmin poi loader to get it on my c 330 when i loaded i checked the the speed box and put in the miles per hour i did not put anything in the distance box . when i pull it up on the gps it shows the miles per hour i wanted and it also put in a distance is this the way it should be or did i do something wrong .

If you load POI files on the SD Card, will the unit pick-up an alert when you get near the location such as driving past a Best Buy even if you are not going to Best Buy? The POI files show up in the Extras section on my Nuvi 660.

I am not sure if this has been asked before and I am sorry if it has. I want to set up some speed limit warnings on the major highways i like to use. Is there a way to set up a poi that can alert if I go over the set speed for a couple miles. Like can I set up two poi's on the highway and have the alert be for that stretch of the highway until the speed is changed?

I created a CSV file of all of the Atlanta Braves Radio Networks radio stations, but I'm wondering do I upload it under Radio or Sports? Is there a way to have it in both categories?

I made a POI file of 300 locations, It contains name, address, city, state, zip code, and phone number. When I upload it to my GPS, everything displays except the phone number.

What am I doing wrong?

I go to maps.google.com and when I find what I'm looking for I press the 'link to this page' which gives me a reusable URL. Im assuming that two of these numbers are the lat and long? I want to lift these and add them into a POI file. Sorry if this is a nubie question, I just started using my Nuvi 350 yesterday

I updated the 'POI File Verifier' to correspond to the latest POI Factory's csv download options:
"Garmin CSV - regular line breaks
Garmin CSV - nuvi 350/360 line breaks
Garmin CSV - no line breaks (easier to import)"

Now, via the user's selection, the program creates the 'Verified' file, the 'Modified for nuvi linebreaks' file, and a 'Removed' file with all linebreaks removed. I recently added an option to check the csv POI file for duplicate entries.

DOES YOUR HARLEY UPDATE INCLUDE MORE DEALERS OR DID YOU JUST PUT IT INTO A CSV FILE FORMAT.HOW DID YOU GET THESE ADDRESSES AND HOW UP TO DATE ARE THEY.

i tow big rv,and i think that many of you which tow rvs,agree that would be great to have file with steep hills(save those brakes,can you smell them)

is it good idea to create files with playgrounds and other such places on the roads?
