Still no computer upgrade

Hi Motorcyle Mama, I ran the whole upgrade process again and it still did not update mapsource. I keep trying to get on the My Garmin site but they say they are upgrading so I will have to wait to send them an e mail. Very Strange. The other maps that are on my Mapsource are
1 Canada Enhanced Base map
2 Canada Metro Guide
3 Canada Metro Guide V4
4 Canada Roads and Recreation
5 World Map
I figured it would at least update the Canada Metro guide maps.

GPS updated!

well I tried again on friday to download the maps to my GPS and it worked.

I was able to download the software to my computer on wed. but was unable to load it onto my GPS from my computer.

I called Garmin and they said their server was down (apparently you still need to connect to the Garmin server to download it to your GPS after loading it to your computer) I tried on Friday and it worked.

most of the problems are because Garmin is trying to stop unauthorized use of the maps but it is a real pain and causing all kinds of issues for all.

even if you get the DVD I believe you still need to use the Garmin server to load the software onto your GPS.

.

I think, even with the DVD, you need to connect to the server so that it can make sure you are loading the proper map for your unit.

One question: why would you have to load the DVD map to your hard drive? Why can't you load the map directly from your DVD drive to your GPS when connected to the server?

I am sure this is in many peoples thoughts!

I have no idea why people put up with being jerked around like this. Unless things change, this will be my first, and last, Garmin product.[/quote]

So go buy a TOM TOM and see if you do any better!

I think you're right

I know several who have Tom-Tom units who say they'll switch to Garmin when they can. They site poor service and worse maps. (Not everyone I know with Tom-Tom, but several.)

Ok, make sure you are running the latest version of MapSource (6.13.7). If you aren't, install the update from Garmin's website. Don't use the update tool within MapSource. It's not reliable.

Then look for the CNNANT2009Update_ENU.msi file (the actual installer) of the map update. See if running that directly works.

For me...

I didn't have to connect online to update my maps. I extracted the CNNANT2009Update_ENU.msi
file from the DVD to my hard drive becuase it was easier for me. Going straight from the DVD was problematic. I think it has to do with the speed of the DVD reading and updating my Nuvi. Kinda like a buffer underrun. It happened to me and was a success by extracting the file itself. Both ways to install seems to work but it worked for me this way.

How often do you update?

I have a C340 with the 2008 maps installed. Do most of you update every year? every other year? only when needed?

how often to update

I only updated mine because it was free. If I had to pay for it I would have waited to update mine since it is fairly new.

2009 update

I just registered my nuvi 750, and went to my MY GARMIN page on garmin.com. I clicked on my maps, and checked to see if I was eligible, and lucky me I was. I could have gotten it free by download, but I chose to pay $10.00 for a hardcopy DVD. They will ship in 4-6 weeks, but I can be patient. I just prefer it in hardcopy. Anyway, I first tried the regular map update link, and was advised it was under constrution. So you may want to try to see eligibility thru Mt Garmin. If this has been posted already, I apologize for the repeat.

Just got a new Zumo 550...

I purchased a new Zumo 550 today and although I'm in Australia, the 2009 updates have been released but are not yet available. The dealer suggested that I should not register the unit yet until they study the update and see if it is worthwhile updating to the 2009 version for Oz.

As I've only just purchased it, they said that I am entitled to the 2009 update free of charge when it becomes available BUT by not registering, it will extend the time that free updates are made available. They suggested that if I don't register till WELL AFTER I get the 2009 update, I might get the 2010 when it becomes available... Does that make sense..?

But you'll be out of luck if Garmin asks for proof of purchase at that time.

Hi Motorcycle Mama, I

Hi Motorcycle Mama, I checked and I have the latest version of Mapsource (6.13.7)but did an update for it anyway. I tried the 2009 Nuvi update once again but still no joy. Unfortunately I only have the download version of the update and not the DVD so I cannot look for the .msi file.
I also downloaded the update onto my laptop (Windows 2000) and now I am trying to figure out how to get the update file onto my main computer to try the update on that version of Mapsource. I thought it might be a problem with the laptop itself.

.

When the downloaded EXE file was run, it should have extracted the files inside of it, try searching on your computer for the MSI. It probably will be in an MSI folder that was created during the extraction.

You should be able to physically copy the downloaded file onto your other computer. Try using a flash drive.

However, one thing that someone on another forum pointed out today is to check the EULA. Previous EULAs allowed MapSource to be installed on an additional computer that you owned, however, this user indicated that the new EULA specified a single computer. Just an FYI. Note that I don't have the update, so I can't verify this.

Wow, Garmin actually

Wow, Garmin actually requires server access to install even if you buy the disc? Geez, they're swamping themselves with traffic (at 2GB a pop) and then even more with that - ugh, no wonder why so many people are having problems!

I have MapSource & 2009 on two computers

I installed NT 2009 from the update DVD on both my laptop as well as my desktop computer with no problems. It appears to have updated MapSource on both sytems. At least, I can see both 2008 and 2009 maps in each system. Hmmm, MapSource was already installed on both before the update. So maybe I didn't answer your question after all...

Just registering and validating your license

I think they are just updating and validating the license information. Once connected to the server, the exchange was very brief and it continued to install everything from the DVD. If I go to MyGarmin, it shows the NT2009 update now and the license key that I typed in at the beginning of the DVD update.

2009 EULA allows only one single computer

MM, I verified that this is indeed the case. Thanks for pointing this out!

The 2009 EULA states:

2. YOU MAY:

(a) install and use one copy of the Software on a single computer or network for personal use of the Software in accordance with this License Agreement. This copy is to be used by only a single user at a time. If you wish to use the Software for more users, you will need an additional license for each user.

The (old) 2008 EULA also had Sections 2. b), c) and d) which allowed archive/backup copies, non-simultaneous use on another PC, and transfer of rights. These sections are not in the 2009 EULA.

The free update you have to work hard for.

I registered my NUVI 260 Monday. The registration site(my.garmin.com) offered the free upgrade whe I registered. I downloaded it. Took about 2 hours (2 gig file size).

Somewhere along the lines you get an advisory that installation of the file must be completed in x number of days and may take up to 2 hours depending on computer hardware.

For some reason at 2 gig the file is still compressed? Decompression takes about 20 minutes or more on my HP Xeon 3.2Ghz with 2 gig of RAM. After decompression the file looks for your device. After the device is connected you have to check the license agreement. After checking the license agreement the software then asks for the product key (why wasn't this put at the start?). When you enter a valid product key the program then attempts to check with the garmin servers. Again why wasn't this put at the start?

If you get lucky and the servers at Garmin are available, you get to install. If you are unlucky and the servers are busy, you get a screen that says "The Garmin servers are experiencing technical difficulty. Please try again later." The only option is to exit and try the thirty minute process all over again. This design is awful.

I called tech support twice yesterday. The first call(9am est) yielded a response of "the IT department has been having trouble since last thursday and we do not have an estimated time or date of repair." The second call(6pm est) yielded an explaination that GARMIN HAD NO IDEA THERE WOULD BE THIS MANY PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THIS UPDATE AND DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH CAPACITY TO ACTIVATE THEM ALL AT THE RATE THEY ARE BEING REQUESTED. YOU WILL HAVE TO CONTINUE TO TRY AGAIN.

I asked to speak to software about the lengthy decompression at the end of the second call. The software department had a 30 minute wait for the next available representative. I hung up and went away shaking my head.

I got lucky my first try this morning. That's good because the NUVI was about to go back in a box and to Walmart while I could still return it.

This is what happens when a company puts their concern against software piracy above their interest in customers. Some complete moron at Garmin without placing any thought in it basically said "we don't want to have any of our software stolen, and we don't want to spend money for extra hardware to meet the demand. We will, therefore, make our customers waste their time and effort (in 30 minute to 2 hour increments) to repeatedly try activate this thing until they simply get the luck of the draw."

For some reason this was not put out on their web updater service.

Why not just order the DVD & pay the $10 shipping?

Then you could save yourself all of this agrevation. Or is there something in the 2009 map update that you just can't get by for a couple of weeks without?

Update for C320

Does anyone know if the current 2009 NT maps are compatible with the StreetPilot c320? Most of the retail stores selling it do not list the 320 in the compatibility chart but it does use the City Navigator NT.

Try to back up your 2008

Try to back up your 2008 map. I updated mine with downloaded and burned file to disk, loaded my Nuvi 750 with 2009 map and didn't back up the 2008 map. My Nuvi came with 2008 map installed so no disc for it. Now I wish I would have made a copy of 2008 map. The 2009 map may not be as good as the 2008 version. I seem to have some issues with it. (Fastest and most direct route seem to be mixed up)

I got ver 2009 free, but....

I downloaded it last night, but stopped short of installing it. I had an August deadline for the first download, but I don't know if I have a deadline of installing once its downloaded (key issues?). I am holding off based on the issues I am reading here, although waiting to install it won't make it better. I think I have two weeks to download once more if needed, and then that's it. Do you think its possible Garmin or the map provider will "fix" the issues, then re-release the map update?

No issues with maps or installation

My download and installation went flawlessly for both units. I don't seem to have any issues with the new maps either. I love seeing the speed limit on the screen when I'm driving. You don't even have to be actively routing either. The speed limit just shows. Last night I was almost home and I thought I'd catch the machine in an error. There's a very short stretch of freeway where the limit drops from 65 to 60 and I figured the machine would keep showing 65. As I passed the sign where the change happens I was pleasantly surprised to see that even this short bit of highway with the lowered limit was known by the maps. The marker dropped to indicate 60 mph as the limit. Very nice.

2009 Map

I got mine free by registering with garmin and just logging into the site. It was very easy.

New Garmin

I just purchased a Garmin 750 today. Do I need to wait until the unit arrives before requesting the update. I have trip in 2 weeks that I would like the software for.

09 version

I bought my 360 3 months ago, registered it using just serial and basic info, and I immidiately qualified for 09 version. FYI

Yes, you need to wait.

You can't get the free upgrade until you register your unit. As soon as you register it, the free update will be offered.

I did my 750 last night. It took about 2 hours.

2009 Maps

I just got a new Nuvi 780. I did all the updates and also registered it through MyGarmin. When I was finishing up the registration it said I qualified for a "FREE" map update to 2009. The FREE update is only until the end of May 2008 I think.

Recieved update via download

When I registered my C550 I was offered the City Navigator North America NT 2009 update as a download. The download took several hours (2.4 gigs) but in the end it was installed in mapsource as well as installing it on the C550.

I travel a lot in NY, NJ, DE, CT and noticed some errors in 2008map
thought that new update should resolve this errors and that it would add some new pois, but...
I compare 2008 and 2009 maps and found out that there is nothing new for my region

Update 2009

May 17 2008 - Free map update on new Nuvi 350
City Navigator North America NT 2009

Bought my 660 a year ago... got my free update yesterday.

I bought by 660 last year, but never registered it. (tried to, but there was something wrong at the time that would not let me register... ended up just not registering my unit). A month ago, I wanted to get the new maps, but knew that it was too late to update for free. I tried downloading a torrent file and ended up eraseing all of my maps on my unit. I thought I had just ruined my unit and decided to call Garmin. I spoke with the customer service rep, and explained that somehow, all of my maps got erased. He had me e-mail him a copy of my reciept to prove that i had purchased the unit from a legitimate source. He then registered my unit, and then had me send my unit back to Garmin with an RMA# for my pkg. A week later I recieved a new unit in the mail at no charge. Yesterday, I went to my.garmin to discover that I was "eligible" for free map updates. Downloaded them, and installed them. All I ended up paying was the cost of shipping my unit to Garmin to get replaced... Well worth a brand new unit and free map updates.

Updates

Doesn't sound like there's any compelling argument for a paid upgrade at this point in time. Between the server issues and what sounds like a lack of new data in the maps, I think I'll pass. Am I missing something here with regards to updated maps?

.

It depends upon the area(s) in which you travel. Some areas have lots of changes and others don't.

It's always advisable to preview the maps for free with Garmin's MapViewer before purchasing the update. That way each user can determine if it makes sense for them to update the maps.

Many users are fine updating the maps every other year rather than every year. But each person's situation is different.

2009 Map Updates

Bought a new c550 Friday to go alongside my IQue PDA. Registered it then downloaded and installed the free map update. Worked like a charm, am very pleased. The file is 2Gig+ so it takes a while even with a cable connection.
Haven't tried the free traffic alert yet but the hands free Bluetooth phone facility works great, which is good news as it becomes law in California next month. I have a Bluetooth earpiece but prefer not to have something stuck in my ear while I am driving.

Simple enough response BUT......

Well royalty, that is a simple enough response, however I just purchased the unit and have a 15 day return option.
The original maps (2008) were pretty bad where I live and yielded the unit unusable for my wife (a non-techie with low patience for tech). The unit would have you turn off a road, make a u-turn, get back on the road..... Exit the same road make a detour through a neighborhood and get back on the road all because the map was setup poorly.
Without the update the unit was going to go back. The update made huge improvements and the unit is now popular with my wife as well as me.

There is no reason for most people to upgrade unless it is free. If Garmin's map source viewer doesn't reflect the changes you are looking for, don't spend the money.

There were some changes made to the freeway near me few years ago. The last few updates have not shown them.

It would help Garmin users a lot if they listed the changes on every updates.

Disks shipping in 3 days or less

I got mine and my brother received 2 disks in less than 3 days from ordering at the MyGarmin site. It did take about a hour and a half to install. But works great. and Well worth the 10 bucks..h grin

Newbie Question!

I have a Zumo 450 which I bought over a year ago, and a Zumo 550 I purchased this April. I understand I'm eligible for the free update for the 550. Both of my Zumos are registered with Garmin. My question is: Do I need to purchase an update for the 450 so that my wife will have the same mapset on her's as I have on my 550, or can I load 2009 maps onto the 450 from this update?

.

You would need to purchase a second unlock code if you wish to update the maps on a second unit.

Download and let run overnight for the install. It will not take less than an hour. Here in NYC Im not sure of the benefits of 09. Ive been using it close to a week now, and dont really notice any diff.

They make you work for it. I just tried to look up a street in Ohio (not in 08 version, still not in 09 version). You have to manually zoom in a click at a time, refreshing the screen along the way when it does not show a map. It does work if you want to verify something before buying, but it will take a bit to find it out.
