MapSource, no custom POIs

Unless I'm doing something wrong, I don't think that MapSource can use Custom POI files -- WalMart, Rest Areas, etc. If this is true, it is a useless piece of software for me.

If I'm wrong, please point me in the right direction.

MapSource, no custom POIs

If you have your custom POI file on your computer as a .gpx file all you have to do is File > Open (custom poi).gpx. They show up as Waypoints in MapSource.

Custom POI

Custom POIs transferred to the Nuvi using Garmin's POIloader are in .GPI files. If you didn't use categories when they were transferred they are all in a file called POI.GPI.

GPI files are not loadable into Mapsource.

.csv

Or if you have them in .csv format, as they are usually available from this site, you can use EPE (Extra_POI_Editor) to convert them to .gpx format.

Everything about EPE and where to download it, you can find searching this site.

Custom POIs in Mapsource? If we knew what your end goal was, then we may have some answers.

I have several custom POI

I have several custom POI files that I upload to the GPS -- Walmart, Rest Areas, Flying J, etc. They are in CSV files. I don't know how to get them to Mapsource for use with it.

In fact, MapSource has been a pain for me. It is not nearly as friendly as Streets and Trips, but the Garmin and S&t often give different routes, and I would like to get all my custom CVS files into MapSource.

Any help will be appreciated.

Use EPE

There is a program called Extra POI Editor - get it here
http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor

This tool will convert .csv files to .gpx files which MapSource will read.

EPE "how-to"

1- Start Extra POI Editor
2- File-Open and select your CSV file
3- Tools-Open in MapSource

There you have it.

Thanks everyone, but the

Thanks everyone, but the problem continues.

Using XP, I can't install the Extra POI Editor. I get many errors when trying to run the application, and there is no support from the author. Well, being that it is free, that's understandable.

Maybe someone with XP who has had success can help me.

Can't

Can't agree that there is no support from the author. In fact he made the post directly above yours.

If you have questions about Extra_POI_Editor you can search this forum as there are 2 very long threads covering this program. Post your question in the Part 2 thread (part 1 got to long and isn't used now) and I'm sure TurboCC will have the answer or some one else will.

It doesn't help to say 'I get many errors.......' however. We need specifics to be able to help and there are lots of us here that use this program and are certainly willing to assist you.

I assume since you say you get errors when running the application, it did some kind of install.

Do an uninstall, then install from wherever you saved the download, and report what happens

EPE Installer?

Have you tried the EPE Installer? That normally installs all missing libraries on your computer. After that, you don't need the installer anymore. Just overwrite the program with the latest version.

Well, I think I'll just give

Well, I think I'll just give up on MapSource. It seems to be a very crude application and doesn't produce the same routes as the Garmin 885T GPS.

Since it is so hard to use and won't produce the same routes as the GPS, I'll just continue to use the much friendler Streets and Trips. It can't transfer routes to the Garmin, but at least I can easily add the same custom POIs as I can on the GPS, create a route and make the Garmin conform to that route.

It's a pity that Garmin doesn't have better software for this work.

Thanks to all.

.

What exact problem are you having with MapSource other than the routes being different? (which actually is a device issue and not a MapSource issue)

MapSource is not difficult to use and works great for transferring data to and from the GPS unit.

And it's very easy to view Custom POIs in MapSource (although that's not its primary function).

MapSource will open GPX format files directly. Just open them.

And for CSV files, it's very easy to convert them to GPX format.

If EPE isn't working for you, there are other options that will work as well.

Love Mapsource

I use Mapsource all the time. I agree with Motercycle Moma that it is not difficult. I check each GPX file on Mapsource.

Do you have your map that goes with your gps unit on your computer so Mapsource can see them? It needs these to do what you want to do.

I make routes on Mapsource and transfer them to my Nuvi with no problem.
There must be something that you are not doing. When I first started using Mapsource I just ran a search on this site for Mapsource help and found all I needed to know to use it.

Mapsource / Streets&Trips

Wil01, I have a couple of ideas for you. First, I have been told you can transfer routes from the newest version of S&T to the nuvi. I do it all the time with Delorme Street Atlas USA, and I think S&T does it in a similar way. Just save or export the route as a GPX file, copy it to the nuvi in the \Garmin\GPX folder, then go to Tools-My Data-Import Route from file.

Second point, is you might want to try Garmins Basecamp as an alternate to Mapsource. I know there are a lot of advocates for Mapsource, but I find the user interface rather cumbersome and non-intuitive. It seems to me that Basecamp is more intuitive and has more of a modern user interface.

Any of the route transfer methods (Mapsource, Delorme, S&T, Mapquest, etc. have the same caveats). The nuvi 885 will recalculate the transferred route on import and you may or may not get the same as the original route. Custom features such as avoids and routing preferences are not transferred. You need to set explicit via points to improve the probability of preserving the exact route.

Corrupt Current.gpx - error receiving data from garmin

I tried receiving info from garmin using mapsource and I got an error about corrupted Current.gpx.

Garmin support told me to do the following, and it worked:

1. Go to this web page: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input

2. Next to "Upload your files here:" click Browse and find the corrupted file on your computer/GPS

3. Next to "Output format:" click GPX

4. Click "Convert"

5. It will process for a little while, then it will bring the next page up

6. Right click on the .gpx file and choose "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As..."

7. Choose the location to save it to

8. Change the name of the file to Current.gpx

9. Click "Save"

This process should fix the XML_DOMERRORHANDLER.CPP and/or corrupted Current.gpx error you are experiencing. Corrupt.gpx

re: Corrupt Current.gpx - error receiving data from garmin

I often save tips I might later need and i want to make sure I am understanding this one.

I think you were using Mapsource in an attempt to transfer info to your GPS. During this process you got an error message (did you write it down?)

Was your comment about receiving info from Garmin made because Garmin is the author of mapsource or because there was actually some connection over the internet to Garmin?
