cdnrver questions

I updated to the 2009 maps a couple of days ago. I was in the same situation as you, and applied the update to Mapsourcce installed from the DVD Garmin sent me.

1) Yes, the downloaded update file will update mapsource.

2) Yes. Your unlock codes are also online at https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm

3) I don't know if the 2009 update disk is standalone, or if you need to reinstall 2008 first. I'd also like to know smile

Garmin Server experiencing difficulty - try again later

Aconite wrote:

Well, finally I was able to speak with the Garmin server after many hours of trying.

I'm having the same problem. I'm installing the DVD update, not trying to download it. Got all the way past entering the product key and then get the error message. I'm on my 6th try and now it's just hung at the hourglass. It's 9:50 PM CST. How many other Garmin users can there be at this time tying up the server by upgrading at the same time?

Woo hoo - 7th time is the charm! It's now installing from the DVD. Really sad thing is after it installs to my laptop, I'll have to install it again on my desktop computer, too.

This series displays the current speed limit on the screen while in map mode. I don't believe that your unit does this.

Just downloaded mine 2 GB

Just downloaded mine 2 GB total took about 1.5 hours

Problems resolved

I kept getting offered the update for $69 even though I had just bought the unit - received it in the mail on April 30 and registered on May 1. The page for my Nuvi showed a first connect to satellites on April 1, 2007. Yeah, right.......

I finally called Garmin and spoke with a tech. First he said maybe I bought my unit second hand. I told him no, I bought it directly from Amazon - not from a secondary vendor. I asked if they even *had* the Nuvi 760 on April 1, 2007. He said he didn't think so. He put me on hold and came back and said it was a database error and to check back in a few hours or the next day.

I checked this evening after work and the note about first satellite contact had been removed from my Nuvi page and I was offered the free update. It's downloading at the moment.

I've been a fan of Garmin support since 2005. I had a slight hitch this time but, once I called them, it was quickly corrected. Like I've told others, all I had to do was CALL them. It's free. Once again, I'm a happy Garmin customer.

What a mess

WEll its a mess in the island and i write a letter again to Mio tech thats what hapends
Puerto Rico Again
Hi again from Puerto Rico:
If you come to The island i suggest not to use you Digiwalk c230 because the maps its too out of date, we have to many new hdways too many new roads and to many closed roads, around 3 new expressway and a lot of trafic directions change and i do not understand how its posible thats you do not have a map update for Puerto Rico. If you take a look on the forums like poi-factory.com you notice the amount of people that have you products and you do nothing for updates. I make a call to Tele Atlas and they told me that they make an update every three months and you have the updates in six months , wow its incredible that google earth send updates every five months directly from tele atlas and your product cost a lot of money compare to google earth. What happend with Mio cooporation? your only interest its on sale the product. I hope you make a fast solution for this issue, because we can trust in mio gps.

Re:Puerto Rico Again
Hello, I'm sorry currently there are no map updates for your gps unit and I do not have any future release dates. although i heard they are shooting for this summer. However I'm sure any misdirections/missing addresses will be corrected then. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-866-646-4477, someone will be happy to answer any questions you might have. Have a good day.
Can you beleive that

free update

I bought my Nuvi 660 back in November of 07, I went online yesterday to Garmins website entered my serial # and I am eligible for the free 2009 maps. I am in the process of downloading it now, it takes a few hours to do. the other option is to pay $10 S&H and get it mailed to you on CD.

I decided to check because a friend who bought his in October was able to get the free download.

so before you order the 2009 maps check on Garmins website first.

Still downloading the map

I just found out about the 2009 map update yesterday and started downloading last night. Hopefully it will be done when I get back from work so I can install it!!! smile

Immediately after seeing

Immediately after seeing Fry's Electronics have the Garmin map update on-sale, I went to Garmin Support web site, download the map for free and updated my 360. Be warned that it did take over an hour to update the map and the map file alone is about 2GB in size.

I bought mine in Nov/Dec 2007 and I am eligible for free update which save me about $45.

Brother got best deal

My Brother just went to Target and got a Brand New Nuvi 200. for $149.00 .and I set him up an account at MyGarmin. we registered his Nuvi and it instantly came up that he gets the Upgrade...figured since he bought it last night. But then he said he never Registered his Nuvi 200 he bought at Christmas..registered it..and Bingo...Also gets a free Upgrade on that one..

Got Update DVD today

Ordered the free upgrade dvd over the weekend (we have dialup and download was pretty much out of the question). $10.00 shipping and handling was acceptable. It was offered on MyGarmin automatically.
Got it today and just finished updating . The whole thing went perfectly. In total it took 2 hrs 3 mins.
There was 30 min of additional downloading and 93 mins
to install to C550. Just my 2cents. I'm a happy boy...

2009 Map Updates

Here is the email I sent to Garmin

Hello,
I recently purchased a Nuvi 660 and upon registering it, I'm unable to get the newest map update. The 660 was purchased from an authorized retailer, and having purchased several other Garmin units I have always been allowed to receive a map update if the update is released within a reasonable length of time after the purchase. I have registered 3 Garmin units and have been promoting your products to all of my friends. There is quite a negative conversation regarding Garmin and their map update policy on several of the web sites relating to nav units. Several people have discussed your compromise as to offering the Nuvi map update at half price. I would hope and expect that you would consider customer support when someone purchases a nav unit and updated map software is released 2 -3 weeks later.

This is their response

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to assist you. We are aware of a situation where the system is not recognizing when an update is available for free for a newly purchased Nuvi 660. We have corrected that and you should see in the next couple of days in your myGarmin account that you are eligible for the free map update. I apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you.

I tried for 2 days to get my map update but Garmin’s servers kept kicking me off. I called today and ordered the 2009 update disk for my Nuvi 660. The cost was $10.00 to cover shipping and handling. The tech said they were swamped with download requests and their system couldn't handle the demand.

Once again Garmin has proved to me that they are as commited to their customers as any other global company.

Download

I had the same problem trying to update a 750. Finally at approx 2:00pm Pacific time I was successful. I can appreciate the enormous amount of downloading that must be taking place. All I can say is I think they are great. They are also going to send me Mapsource free of charge when they are available.

Same thing happened to me. Just have a little patience. You will eventually get it to work. Mine finally connected to Garmin after midnight. I then just went to bed and in the morning, I had new maps. /cheer

I will keep my fingers crossed for you. I was anxious to get the new maps loaded too since I am off to Reno this week, South Carolina the next week, and then Vegas.

2009 Update

Just wondering. I have 2 computers and 2 GPS's. Has anyone tried using a second computer to load updated maps to a second GPS. My other GPS is about 2 months older than the one that qualified for the free update. Not that I consider this to be right but I don't consider all of Garmins decisions to be right or fair either. Has anyone tried this and what was the results.

You will need a second, valid, unused unlock code to unlock the maps to a second unit.

Looks like a DVD order

Based on some of the comments on download time, it looks like I will order the DVD. I found it available at Amazon with free shipping for less than $63.

Installed......

I installed the update on my Nuvi last night. It took quite a while to load the software onto the unit but it went flawlessly. Now both of my units have the latest maps. Sadly, my daughter's street still isn't listed - the entire subdivision is missing - and it's been there for years.

2009 Update

I beleive that whether or not to update is a function of where you are and where you plan to travel. If you are in an area that is growing, platting subdivisions, and creating new streets, it may be useful to update. I can also verify that it often takes two years or more for the maps to reflect actual changes in the field.

I have read that there is only two companies that provide mapping services to companies like Garmin. Their update capability is limited to what is provided by city or county mapping. GIS capabilities of government entities is an important factor in this.

I have noticed that new streets in Garmin's 2009 Udate have also just recently appeared in Google's Maps.

Report Them to Navteq

I would report those addressess to garmin map report or to Navteq so they will be available in future releases. God Bless.

It would be interesting to find out where those addresss are. It may be dependant on the GIS (Geograpic Information System) capabilities of the local government. If they don't have GIS then it is likely they won't get updated. One way to check is to look at the county assessor's web site. If they provide "interative GIS maps" then they have the information that the services need to update the maps in your area.

2 Product Keys

I used the 2009 update download link and product key from myGarmin to update my nuvi 680. No Problems. When I received my free upgrade disk from Garmin (I did have to pay a $20 brokerage fee to UPS) I compared the product keys and they were different. Score!

Installed....

Makes you think twice about paying for it. I may just wait for the next update if things like this are any indication.

Garmin Map updates?

I just got my garmin c550, I believe it has North America 2008 maps. It came preloaded with it. I have been reading thru the forum to learn what I can, but I am confused.. some of you are talking about ordering North America Nt 2009?
Anyway I went to the Garmin site to see about getting the latest maps, but this is what it says on there site...
Note: You cannot use this product to update the maps on your preloaded Garmin device. To order updated map data for your preloaded Garmin device, visit the Map Updates page.

When I got my c550 I dl Webupdater, and it updated something?

Help please.

Thanks,
Chuck

.

Ok, you are mixing several different things. Let's try to clear them up.

1. The map version is different from the firmware version.

2. The map update just released last week was the v2009 update which is the next version after v2008.

3. In order to see if there are map updates available for your unit and whether you are eligible for a free update, you need to go to your my.Garmin.com page and register your unit. The updates for the maps will be listed there.

4. What you were looking at on the Garmin website was the MapSource product for units that DON'T come with the maps preloaded. That's why you saw that comment.

5. WebUpdater is for updating your unit's firmware. You should install the program and run it with your unit attached to the computer with the USB cable in order to get the latest firmware.

Garmin's customer service,

Garmin's customer service, in a word, sux.

Map updates should be free for any and all units which are under warranty, which is one year.

Garmin, for whatever reason, does not have a written map update policy. They apparently don't even have a double secret internal one, either, judging from the wide range of info handed out by their support reps.

There IS a written warranty which is included with every unit, and is also on their web site - http://www8.garmin.com/support/warranty.html

That warranty covers "defects in materials or workmanship for one year from the date of purchase." There is no exclusion in the warranty for map data.

It should be obvious that every map has defects. Garmin admits as much in the printed disclaimer shipped with every unit ("Virtually all data sources contain some inaccurate or incomplete data.") Those defects in workmanship are clearly covered under the 1 year warranty.

Unless and until they change the written warranty for new units to exclude map data, Garmin, as expressed by their own explicit warranty, is legally and ethically bound to provide updates during the warranty period.

I have no idea why people put up with being jerked around like this. Unless things change, this will be my first, and last, Garmin product.

.

Good luck with this. Let us know how the lawsuit works out. If I were you, I'd stick with "defects in materials". There are all sorts of reports on this site of map errors. The problem is that new maps have errors, too. So if maps are a warranty item, your claim cannot be satisfied by providing you with a map update. Do you know of a maker that offers free maps during the warranty period?

I think Garmin's secret policy is providing a free map update if you registered your unit on March 1 or later and it has the previous year's map. I don't think the purchase date or first-used date has any significance in determining who gets a free update.

Garmin-Navteq = Dell-Microsoft

mike_s wrote:

Nor does there need to be, since they do not produce the map data. It's just included with the product that they produce.

Do you think Dell will be held responsible for MS Windows that is supplied with their computers? Or is it Microsoft that you have to contact for bug fixes and updates?

Lots of luck with your lawsuit. Here's betting that you won't find an attorney to take the case without a retainer up front. wink

mike_s wrote:

SUX = Sioux City, IA, USA (Airport Code)
SUX = Succhinylcholine (depolarizing neuromuscular blocking drug)

I guess I don't know how your "word" relates to Garmin customer service.

Most seem to think that Garmin customer service far exceeds that of other companies in general and GPS companies in particular.

Quote:

No, but not for the reason you imply. Dell's warranty very specifically states: "This limited warranty does not cover: Software, including the operating system..."

Do you think that the warranty on a car wouldn't cover a broken seat, because the seat is made by an OEM such as Lear? Or a broken engine computer, because it's made by Bosch or Delphi?

If your Nuvi stops working because the flash memory chip fails or the SiRF GPS unit breaks, will you not expect Garmin to fix it under warranty? Garmin doesn't make either of those parts.

If you bought a Nuvi, and it simply didn't display any map info at all, would you be OK with that, because you don't consider Garmin responsible for map data?

How much of a Nuvi do you think Garmin actually makes? I'd guess zero - they just design/engineer it, and farm out manufacturing to others. By your logic, they would never be responsible for fixing a broken unit.

You're either trolling here, or extremely ignorant of warranty law.
