Next map update.

It will be interesting to see if Garmin actually releases a fourth 2010 update in Feb. or Mar. or if they just skip that one and release a 2011 map in April.

That was really helpful!

Did I get cheated?

I had to send for the Disk since I'm on Dial-up. Got it a few days ago, it was 2010.10 maps?

Read carefully

Garmin actually says that they will release updates UP TO 4 times a year. That does not mean you will get 4 updates a year. It means you will get from 1 to 4 updates a year.

Actual quote from website:

nüMaps Lifetime subscription lets you download the newest map data up to 4 times per year without monthly fees or maintenance costs.

Unfortunately, in our town there are lots of road projects and roads being created, removed, and just plain moved to make way for buildings, new interstates, and because of the corrupt local government doing things that will benefit their pocket and post-politics career(s).

As a civil engineer living in Phoenix, I would love it if development resumed and we had lots of projects that would make it necessary for me to update my map. Unfortunately, we don't have new roads being constructed, only reconstructed or paving overlays.

At this point, I'll probably wait until my MSN traffic runs out on 1/1/2012 and get a new unit just prior to that.

Map Updates to SD card

Has anybody done a map update to an SD card in their Garmin? It looks like if you don't have enough room on your Garmin for a particular map update, you can put part or all of it on an SD card.

Has anybody done this?

MSN is discontinuing their service

I had received this quote from one of my friends, I thought I will share it with you.
I am, however, concerned with the "lifetime traffic" advertisement since MSN is discontinuing their service on 12/31/2011. This means no more traffic on Jan 1 2012.

map updated to SD card

I had the same question - mkahn was kind enough to answer in another post. I ran the install twice.
Second time install to the SD card. No way to verify
installation but, my C530 says two map areas available.
Crew

From mkahn
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/27390?page=1

I loaded them using MapInstall which comes with the download.
1. You need to know which part of the country you downloaded to you c530 with the original install (East, West, etc.).
2. Open Map Install and select where you want to install (I had my SD card in my computer because then I can use USB 2 as opposed to USB 1 through the c530.
3. Select as many areas as you want to load the SD card. The program will link them together as a single file on the SD Card. In my case, I had chosen West, so I just selected the Eastern states and PR. I suggest that you select slightly more of an area than the area that you didn't load on your GPSr as you don't want to miss anything.
4. I checked with Garmin, and the unit works fine if a locatation is duplicated.

2010.30 was no good for me

I am having endless problems with 2010.30 around Phoenix. My 780 always freezes at certain locations and it just seems to be happening more and more or different locations.

Best of luck with .30

is it worth it?

is it really worth it to have constant updates? do you really see much difference? sure if you happen to frequent a new road, but where I live there is nothing much new and the errors from NavTel have been there for years and don't get updated.

If you don't update, you'll never know, right? Besides, if you have the lifetime maps, you may as well get some mileage out of them!

It depends where you live. Some users report improvement where they live, other users report virtually no change.

One way to check beforehand is to look at the latest map on the Garmin website. You have to scroll around and zoom in/out to check the areas you are interested in.

It's highly recommended to do a hard reset. Here's the link for the procedure.

thanks

Thanks Gary A for the link. I see that none of the key errors in my neighborhood are fixed.

THen again, I don't need the GPS in those areas, its when i go somewhere I haven't been that I need them. at those places, I won't know if there are errors until I get there.

That lifetime update is tied to a unit's serial number isn't it? if I decide to upgrade to another unit someday, it won't transfer will it?

I think GARMIN should add a feature that will allow user to enter the exact address on that map.
Just my 2 cents...

how would that help me?

The data is on your map, so what would be the benefit to me on my map? We can't share map data.

Wait for Update

I bought my wife a 265W, I'm hoping the new map come out before the free update expires. I have until 18 August!

93%

mstrehle wrote:

For what it's worth, I'll guess that you have a 93% chance of getting 2011.20 before 18Aug so I suggest holding off on updating until you hear the new map's out--or you're within 2-3 days of your free map expiration--if for some reason it's not out by then.

On the other hand, if you plan to buy a numaps Lifetime subscription for the nuvi soon, then go for the current 2011.10 upgrade now.

[Edit] Make that 100%. I just read here that 2011.20 is out today!

Good Timing

You're right, just updated to 2011.20 today. The new update includes my neighborhood, that's why I was hoping it would come out before 18 Aug. Before, it would tell me to "Drive off-road" when on the streets in the neighborhood (which has been around for 2+ years now.

Thanks !

Been giving the new maps a work out.Traveling across country and no problems so far.Something I don't usually do is use the internal Pois. Some of the files I have do not cover all the food locations in some areas that I like.Must say so far the internal Pois have been dead on for something different. For the hotels as well.My statement is so far now.

Using some new things on my gps that I have not tried before. The near tab then search final destination is great to start calling ahead for hotels before you arrive.
