JohnC -- yep, paid the $10

JohnC -- yep, paid the $10 and got the free upgrade on a DVD. Did a backup of entire Nuvi and (kind of a belt and suspender guy) copied the 2008 map info (with unlock key) to a separate folder on hard drive and renamed as described in the thread "Load map from SD card into Nuvi" I plan to try putting the 2008 maps on SD card just for the heck of it.

Did the 2009 update under Vista and everything went perfect (as far as I can tell). Took about and hour and 15 minutes because USB is such a s-l-o-w way to go. But it'd done!

MapSource?

pakuhnke wrote:

$10 to ship a 5oz disc seems a little much to me. Is access to MapSource worth it?

Just finished installing the 2009 update on the 260 using my $10 DVD smile Went perfect under Vista. After reading through this thread I thought the update would include MapSource but I don't see it anywhere???

The update did install WebUpdater and I used it after the 2009 map update to make sure all other files (firmware, voices etc.) were current. Worked perfect.

A few questions --

1. Does anyone know if the 2009 NT update includes MapSource? Yes, I know MapSource won't do as much for me since I'm only running the 260 without routing capability but....

2. The Communicator plug-in, POIloader, and 2009 Update show in the Windows add/remove (in control panel). I plan to use the add/remove to remove the 2009 (to save disk space). Does anyone know if this will also remove the WebUpdater?

(Hope not, I'd like to leave WebUpdater on the system....but WebUpdater does not have a seperate entry in the add/remove panel?) Thanks.

If it does remove the WebUpdater you can download it again from the Garmin web site. Both it and the POI loader are available.

E-Mail from Garmin

I have had the 2009 Map Update for several months now. Today, I get an e-mail from Garmin telling me the update is now available. I'm glad I didn't wait around for them to notify me, and got my information from the Poi Factory!

Garmin Nuvi 660

can i upload map 2009 to nuvi's memory

Do I need to upload map 2009 into SD card and use it? or can I upload it to nuvi's internal memory ?

.

When you run the map update program, it will overwrite the existing maps on the nuvi itself.

Map Updates

Is there an option for map updates other than the $69.99 from Garmin??? How does one know if the updates are worth that hefty investment? I'm thinking once every four or five years might make sense but spending $70 per year is a bit steep. What do you guys think? What do the rest of you do? Nuvi 650

Thanks, Valerie

.

You don't have to purchase it directly from Garmin. You can typically get it for less from third party retailers.

Whether it's worth it or not depends on each user. I depends upon the areas in which you travel and whether or not there are changes in those areas.

It's always advisable to preview the maps on Garmin's website prior to purchasing them to see if there are changes that are important to you.

Many people find that updating the maps every other year works well for them.

$54.95

You can ALWAYS do better by buying from a dealer. Garmin will only sell at list price, while the dealers will usually discount it. I found the 2009 update for $54.xx at www.antonline.com. Quick service - I had it in 2 days.

And for those who qualify for the free update: I got a Nuvi 760 on Fathers day and registered it and ordered the update DVD for $10 shipping instead of downloading. The Garmin site said 4-6 weeks delivery time. I received it in 4 days.

clarification on free 2009 update

Costco is a great place to buy Garmins and other electronic items, if you want to buy at a store in person. Amazon is probably the best seller in terms of price, but the UPS delivery and packaging is awful. Both places have very good return policies.

The Garmins from Amazon have the 2008 maps. I just got a nuvi 360 this past week.

The 2009 map update is free, but you are supposed to register your Garmin within 30 days in order to get the access key for the free map download. Once you have registered, you have 90 days to actually download the file (about 2.04 GB). Go to a computer with a very fast high speed internet connection for this download. I used a public computer that took 10 minutes, instead of taking more than 2 hours on a personal computer. Just make sure that you put the file on a flash that can hold that file size.

In order to register, you have to download a plug-in for your web browser and restart your computer, so that your Garmin can communicate with your computer.

The 2009 map update is free, but it does depend on the model number and when/where you bought it. If you buy a Garmin from a big reputable seller recently and find that it has 2008 maps on it, then chances are very good that you can get the 2009 map update for free.

Wow, you are so right. I bought mine from amazon and the packaging was horrible. The box that the Garmin comes in is very small. The size of the box that it was shipped in was HUGE, like really big. It had a few bags with air it and thats it. Very poorly packaged. Dont understand why they shipped it that way

2009 Update

Interesting, I bought my nuvi 760 this month from Costco online. I registered it, and did not receive any updates on my 2008 map. After reading some posts on this site, I called Garmin's tech service to get the 2009 update and they said that they have a glitch in their system and for some reason some of the units that are being registered are not showing up as needing the update. Anyway, he fixed my registration and I downloaded the program last night. It took over 2 hours.

Garmin Nuvi 680

I just bought mine today. Does anyone know if I'm eligable to recieve the new update or do I have to purchase it?

.

If you log in to your my.garmin.com site, it will tell you if you are eligible.

Map updates

According to Garmin, the 2009 map is free to people who purchased their GPS after March 1, 2008.

I have a Kenwood DNX7120

I have a Kenwood DNX7120 with built in Garmin. They sent me a mapsource Navigation NT 2009 DVD that loads on my PC. Updates to the DNX are on SD card and I have yet to see if they will send that to me or not.

where to get it?

I would like to know where and how to get the new updated map for my nuvi 200. also what is different or new about it besides updated streets. thank you
ctoms

.

You get it from the my.garmin.com site if you are eligible for the free update. Otherwise, you can purchase it from third party retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, ProVantage etc.

You can use the MapViewer on Garmin's website to preview the maps before you purchase.

I hope I get a free update

I haven't registered you nuvi yet. I hope that when I do I will get a free upgrade.

I just bought an old

I just bought an old refurbished Garmin c550 and it came with the latest update when I registered it. Not bad for 2006 model.

i am so mad i bought my 780

i am so mad i bought my 780 in late feb. it come with v7 had no clue just figured since this was a new model it would have the most updated maps guess i was wrong called garmin they basically said i was up a creek with out a paddle pay the 69. bucks what a load of horse po 700 plus dollars for unit and the mapping is already 2 years old what a crock

.

The 780 only came out in January, so I doubt be very surprised if it had the v7 maps which came out in 2006.

Are you sure it doesn't have the v2008 maps?

2009 Map

Got mine at the Garmin store on Michigan Ave. in Chicago yesterday.

2009 maps.

Got mine from Amazon.com with free Standard Shipping for about $55. Came in just a few days, ahead of predicted ship and arrival dates.

Not sure what map contents or driving directions were improved. Still many shortcomings as far as POIs.

Bernie - Garmin Nuvi 760 (used to have 350 & 360)

MapSource

You can download MapSource in the download section.
It will have all the maps and POIs in it and is great.

I contacted Garmin Tech services to find out how to get at the maps and told them I had MapSource and they told me download the new MapSource.

It is free
I bought my Nuvi 750 in April registered it, downloaded 2009 update (took 24hrs with my INet connection) Installed it then downloaded Mapsource and now am extremly impressed with this unit. Garmin has excellent support glad I bought a Garmin.

I have the mapsource NT

I have the mapsource NT 2009. How would I get the new maps onto an SD card for use with my in dash Kenwood/Garmin unit?

Garmin support is brutal to try and get on the phone. Long hold times.

Got a New Nuvi 650

I just got a Garmin Nuvi 650 and downloaded the 2009 map update FOR FREE!! didnt have to spend a hundred bucks, sooooo happy....altough it took 12 hours to download and two more to install.....but still free!

Posted speed limits of more roads added

On the subject on whether the update from the 2008 map to 2009 is worth it: We live in Albuquerque, NM, one of the areas that is listed as including changes due to new construction. We have used the Nuvi 750 on recent trips to Washington state, Montana and Wyoming. The "new looking" streets that we drove in Casper , for example, were on the map.

As for Albuquerque, while there are some streets added, not all the newly constructed streets in Albuquerque that I would expect to see on the new map are included (Extention of Paseo Del Norte or new additions west of town, for example. The only real difference we noticed is that the posted speed limit is displayed for many secondary street and routes not shown with the 2008 version.

My update was free. I admit to being conservative, but having used the 2008 and the 2009 version, I would not be inclined to spend $70.00 for it, but would opt to wait for a later version. Just one person's opinion.

Uhhhh, Ummmmmmm, Ohhhhhh,

Uhhhh, Ummmmmmm, Ohhhhhh, Ahhhhhh, you ALL DO KNOW you can get the map updates at your local Wally World for a reduced PRICE DON'T YOU!?

My experience placing 2008 maps on SD

This is in response to JoePa post above -- I have the mapsource NT...

I didn't hit quote and now don't know how to delete this post sad Oh well here's the response.

Just for grins, I followed the directions posted by Hornbyp and made copies of the 2008 NT map and key files from my 260 before upgrading to 2009 maps. Placed the old 2008 map files on a 2G SD card as gmapsupp.img (unlock key) and GMAPSUPP.UNL (map data). Found that the 260 would not recognize them unless they were in a folder on the SD card named garmin. Once I placed the files in a garmin folder on the SD card the system lists both the 2009 (new - internal on the Garmin unit) and 2008 (old - on SD card) maps when going Settings>Map>Map Info. I can select which source I want to use and away I go. This might work for the 2009 maps too...but you will need your 25 digit unlock code for the 2009 maps if you don't have a gmapsupp.img in your Garmin unit.

It's worth a try, if you're only copying the files you shouldn't mess anything up smile Just my 2 cents worth. Others have way more experience with the Garmin units and might have a better answer.

Nuvi 350

I was able to go to the garmin website and type in the serial number and it offered it for free after I registered, my friend did not get so lucky as he had already registered his when he bought it even though it was about the same time frame.

Preview maps

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but you can preview the entire map update for free on Garmin's website before buying it. It's a little cumbersome and you will need to know the specific areas you are checking, but I found it worthwhile before I dropped $55 on the 2009 map update.

Good luck.

Costco - Map Updates

Will Costco provide free map updates if the unit was brought in Dec 2007?
Some one told me that GPS Units are not part of the 3 month costco return policy for electronics. So, technically one can return the old GPS and get a new one.
Is this right??

2009 Map Updates

I think every question that could be asked about this subject has been asked over and over it is probably time to retire it, but if people still want to comment then could it all be put under one thread instead of 2 or three and then more new ones poping up. Please don't everyone come down on me and state don't read use delete. I do that already.

I thought all electronics are now under this policy. I'll check with them today. Thanks!
