Everyday is a GREAT day :)

just bought a new 660

I just registered a new 660 last week..I am sure hoping that qualified me for the free up date for that one...and Maybe my 650 I got last Dec.?? we will see. they seemed to give them to everyone last year that got 330s for 128..I would hope they give them for the Nuvis too..

Don't see the map on Garmin Site

I don't see the map on Garmin's website to see if this update is useful to me. Did you guys see it there? I'd like to check out individual roads to see if they have been updated.

werskine, Thanks for the info, just got off the phone with tvnav.com and they do have the update DVD in stock, unfortunately for me the cost of shipping to Canada is $33.00, making it not worth my while. I would have pulled the trigger on this deal if the shipping was $15.00 or less. Anyways, thanks again and enjoy your map update grin

2009 Maps

I just got an email from GPSCITY that my copies of the 2009 updates DVD are shipping out via FEDEX to me.

I should have them soon.

Funny, so many vendors do not have it in stock, but a select few do have it.

Kinda weird.....

2009 Map updates

So I just called Garmin Tech support and inquired if my unit was availble for a free update and they said that they are in a "black out" right now so they can't view who's availible yet. What he did say though is that the 2009 Map does not even come out until May? Even the actual ship dates are not till sometime in May?

I will not even be able to find out until May if I get it free!

What's up with that?

2009 Update

Do they post what changes are included on a map update anywhere? I understand the list would be lengthy considering the scope of the coverage but it sure seems like it would be a good thing to know if it was necessary to update my maps.

I would think that it would be a matter of knowing what I was paying for!

Why are they saying May?

I have no idea why Garmin is saying wait until May. I preordered mine from TVnav and it arrives on Thursday. I wish Garmin would setup a map update site so users can input a zipcode and see changes from last version in their area. Just got another email from TVnav saying they just received a large shipment of the 2009 Update today.

Depends on geography (US or CANADA)

No email from GPSCITY for me, I called their toll-free number and was told that the 2009 DVDs, for my order from Canada, will be in on Apr. 14. So my guess, with shipping, is that I may get my copy around the end of that week sad

I wonder

I wonder if you would be better off "NOT" registering the unit right now and waiting untill after the 2009 release shows up on the Garmin website?. Then it will show up as being purchased "after" the 2009 release. All I think the site asks is Date purchased, serial number and reg number?. I don't think you needed a receipt number or anything.

I just checked, all that is says there is:
Registration Date:
serial number:
registration code:
Dealer/retailer:
date purchased:

Done!!!!

Up and running yesterday!!!

Map updates

I got my Garmin on April 2nd and sent an email to Garmin about a map update and got this reply:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

The conditions for the free who is eligible to receive a free update for City Navigator North America 2009 are still be determined. But the update should be released late April 2008 beginning of May 2008. You can check to see if you get the update for free by checking back at the link below when the update is avialable.

If you read through the forum, you will find several discussions where some people with that unit were able to get a free update to the maps by calling Garmin very soon (with 30 days or so) of purchasing it.

Several things to remember/consider.

The c330 is on Garmin's official "not eligible for a free update" list.

Some people have gotten the update for free and some haven't.

Most people who got the free update requested it (by CALLING Garmin Customer Support) SOON after their purchase. Waiting 5+ months will likely lessen the success rate of getting it.

The entire map update will not fit on the c330. There's not enough space. You will have to select either the lower 48 states or Canada. Note that the rest can be loaded on an SD card. Instructions can be found on the forum as well.

Garmin has stopped sending out the v2008 update now that v2009 has been released.

The best advice is to call Garmin and politely explain your situation and request the update.

My guess is that you are unlikely to be successful for the reasons I listed above. You would have had a MUCH better chance if you had called in November.

Now that the next version is out, you likely have lost any ability you would have had to get the update free.

Following MM reply you may check

this thread as well.

2009 Update

I remember the 2008 Update just like it was yesterday, what a mess that was, trying to figure out who was and wasn't gonna get it for free.

Anyone think that getting an update every other year is a bad idea?

I know the update really covers road changes done a year or two ago.

"NOT" registering

I think this might work. Please, check Robert660 post in this thread.

This thread goes back to the 2008 map update but I think it is still informative. I hope Garmin do not change their free update policy.

Map Update

Dave,
I too purchased my 650 in December. Let us know if you get a positive response from Garmin.

If you go to the my.garmin.com site and register your unit, it will indicate if there are any map updates available for your unit and whether you are eligible for a free update.

Typically, you are only eligible for a free update if you purchase your unit AFTER the new maps are released and if that unit has the old maps.

How much?

Did Garmin indicate how much is new map will be?

From Garmin...

I contacted Garmin Customer Support yesterday and received the following about the map updates. I plan to buy the Nuvi 750 this month and wanted to know what would happen if it had the 2008 maps on it.

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. According to our policy last year we are honoring the 2009 mapping for those customers that purchase their units with in two months of the mapping being released they are to be available at the end of April."

Not Much New

Installed 2009 Update this morning and began inputing addresses from a notebook I keep of locations that did not exist according to City Navigator 2007 or 2008 and of the 30 I have tried I still have not found any that have been updated.

What "is" New?

mourton wrote:

So is there anything really worth the update or is this just Garmin's yearly pay us $60 to keep our stock holders happy and we will change the year in the title from '08 to '09? wink

Cheap skate!!!

My Nuvi 660 came with v.2008. I bought the unit on Thanksgiving of 2007. I'll update it in 2010. There can't be that much change. I admit I'm a cheap skate.

Report them to navteq.

I would report those addressess to garmin map report or to Navteq so they will be available in future releases. God Bless.

Worth The Money?

Paul I cannot say if it is worth the money I received my 2008 update free but paid for this one. I still have about 60 addresses to check, but so far here in the Sacramento/Bay Area (and beyond) it does not seem to be worth it.
Heaven I have reported all 92 locations and about 40 outdated POI's in my book to Navteq multiple times, not sure it does much good in the short term. One of the POI files was for a place to refill my propane tanks, the location I called had been closed for 7 yrs, so always call a non custom POI just to make sure the place is still in business.

edit: Just searched Krispy Kreme and got 8 hits, problem is Krispy Kreme quit California 2 yrs ago, you would think that would have been pretty easy to update.

.

POIs are typically the lowest on the priority list of things that get updated. Roads are more important.

I Spoke to Garmin

I just got an Nuvi 660 yesterday, I called Garmin before I regestered it to ask if I would be entitled to the 2009 updates. I was told if the unit was bought after March 1, you would get it.

Update.

I just bought a Nuvi 660 yesterday also. I hope to get the new maps from garmin also.

Should carry more weight

MM, I think that updating the POI DB, should carry the same weight, as promoting it. I have never seen a promotion for any GPSr that does not use the "6 million points of interest built in" as a primary selling point. if they only update once a year the least they can do under those circumstances is put more effort into an updating the POI file

I just bought mine 250W 2

I just bought mine 250W 2 days ago and there is already an update:(

email confirmation

This is what Garmin told me.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I would be happy to assist you. The policy per the new map update is if a unit has been purchased after March 1, 2008 the customer would be eligible for one free map update to City Navigator North America NT 2009. You would be able to order (once available) through MyGarmin.com or call us to set up an order.

Hopefully this information suffices; if you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact me.

List of Updates

Does Garmin list what updates are included? Or do you just have to go to their website and try out the demo map?

I've never seen them issue a list of changes. You have to use the MapViewer on their site.

2009 Map Updates - Release

I had a phone conversation with Garmin April 9th. This is what Garmin told me about map updates.

The 2009 Map updates will be ready for release at the end of April, 2008.

May be a good idea

This may not be a bad idea. Another way to look at it is: If the maps don't change much from year to year, skip two or three updates, put the money you would have spent away, and in three years you can probably by a new unit (with new technology) as the prices continue to drop, and get new maps with it at that time.

not really....

Unfortunately, in our town there are lots of road projects and roads being created, removed, and just plain moved to make way for buildings, new interstates, and because of the corrupt local government doing things that will benefit their pocket and post-politics career(s).

I'd rather user a GPSr for 2-3 years, and pay for at least one map update (hoefully qualify for a free one as well), and then, if the prices enough, get a new one.

MapViewer?

That would be a good "should I buy?" answer. There are a couple things I would like to see if they fix first. Too bad they do not post the 2009 update there only 2008 and NT v8.
