Wonder how they can tell?

Vandal wrote:

I wonder how? It's not like the GPS has a way of sending any data back to them to identify itself. I suppose during WebUpdater maybe some info could be sent back to their system...

Isn't this supposed to be

Isn't this supposed to be offered free for recently purchased units? I purchased mine on March 30 and activated it on the 4th when I received it. My garmin account does not show anything for download, just for purchase.

When I called them about a week or 2 ago they said that I will receive the free update since I just purchased it.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Dial up connection

From what I hear, people eligible for a free update can download for free or get the DVD for $10. What advantages are there to having the DVD in hand?

Thanks for your insights.

For those of us that have dial up and can't download the thing. It would take a week and probably couldn't be stopped and re-started without totally re-doing the whole thing. Not practical.

Unfortunatly it is NOT free

I got my 670 on April 17, registered it on April 24. When I went to Map Updates, it offered me to purchase the 2009 update. I called Garmin and I was told that it is not free for the 6xx series nuvi units. It is a free update only for 2xx and 7xx. I was pretty much told "tough luck!" - it doesnt matter that I just bought the unit over a week ago - I have to buy the map update. I was also told by the support tech that they recently discontinued the 6xx seris (?!?!? huh) so I should not expect to see 2009 on any newer 6xx units. (This is after I said that I'll take it back and get a newer one with the update!
Garmin update policy sucks big time!
I just spent over $400 for the nuvi and I have to spend another $70 to have an up-to-date unit less then two weeks after the purchase?!?

.

Garmin is going to damage their good reputation if they stick with that policy. They should equally support whatever they sell, whether or not it gets discontinued. It's not rational to have different policies for different units.

First Connect

Maybe, when you download an update for your unit, it can pass back to Garmin the first date the unit acquired sats thru the internet. There certainly isn't any other way for the GPS to contact Garmin!

Just Guessing

Guessing that when you first connect to a satelite that the connection is recorded in the unit along with other permanent data. When you use Web-updater and/or register your Garmin that info may be read and passed back to Garmin.

Again, not sure this is what is happening, but with technology as it is today, I would think this is possible.

Already Installed The 2009 Update

I ordered the 2009 update from Amazon for $53.20 plus shipping. It arrived 3 days after ordering even though it was shipped Standard UPS.

It updated my Nuvi 350 without a hitch. There is a "Product Key" number on the back of the DVD case. That is your "unlock code."

You will need to have your computer connected to the internet while updating your maps. All in all, a very simple process. Just click on the map install icon, enter the "Product Code" number and everything from that point on is taken care of automatically. Takes about 1 1/2 hours.

For those who asked, my computer is a Mac Power Book.

There was significant road updating in my area (Myrtle Beach, SC) as well as the POIs for restaurants.

DownLoad the CNNA NT 2009

For those that download the upgrade for CNNA NT 2009, if they ever need to reload the file just remember to save a copy where you can retrieve it later such as burn it to a DVD or a 4GB SDHC card. You can always go back to MyGarmin >> ManageMaps and get the ProductCode and UnlockCode from there.

Because once you download it you only have 14 days to download it again. So Make sure you save a copy for future emergency's. Never know what will happen. could loose your hard drive or something else just as dramatic.

650 Updated

Unfortunatly it is NOT free

I bought my 650 at the end of March. I registered it on April 2. I checked for the 2009 update and it was free. It's installing right now. It took a while to download 2.2 GB...

Did you give it a try online instead of calling them?I

Nuvi 660 is out of luck

I called Garmin this morning. I got my nuvi 660 March 30, delivered and activated on April 4th. but it does not qualify for free map update 2009 because, and this is from their support person "the nuvi 660 is no longer being manufactured therefore it does not qualify for the update"

this is a bunch of bull if you ask me, why the 650 received the update and not the 660?

I told them that I would be returning their product, they didn't even care.

So whoever is reading this please take a note of Garmin's 'excellent' support!

I guess they figured they would save so much money by ignoring the 660 and giving the update to the 650 and other models! It just does not make any sense!

Cool new features

So I had reported last year a road that was incorrect and it was fixed in this 2009 update. Glad to see that. I would hate for nuvi to still tell me to drive off a 10 foot cliff everyday but they now fixed it. smile

So this definitely says if you notice something wrong report it!!
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/errorForm.jsp

Also, they now show buildings on the map. They have the outlines and are shaded in light green of the designs of supermarkets and apartment complexes which was not on the 2008 version. This update was well worth it for me. smile

Going through mapsource

So in the new 2009 Mapsource update, it looks like Bp gas and Starbucks paid some extra money to get their own icons put on now. The Starbucks icon is not that good though. Just a white coffee cup with a green circle on it and green backdrop. The ones on POI factory are still better smile I wonder who else paid some money for icons?

660's CAN get the upgrade for free

Had a very nice conversation with Garmin Customer Service this morning. I purchased a 660 in April and when I called about the update, she put me on hold, went to consult someone and then came back to say that just I would get the update for free. wink

So the rest of you are out of luck I guess!!

It took me two days to

It took me two days to complete the order for a disk. I started on May 1 at about noon, and finally got the order to go through at late this afternoon after at least thirty attempts, one of which was at 4:30 AM. I would click on the last page of entry to confirm the order, and I kept getting an "HTML 500" error. I had a lot of back-and-forthing with Garmin support, and had tried to place my order on two different computers, each with a separate ISP. I tried using two different credit cards, and two separate browsers. After the third email response from Garmin (they were still asking questions at that point in an effort to determine the problem), it finally went through. No one said as much, but they may just have been really slammed when the update was released.

Thanks!

I went to myGarmin and

I went to myGarmin and verified that the update was available and at no charge. I downloaded the update in just over 1 hour, then another 40 min to update my Nuvi260. At the end it said the update to the unit was successful but the update to my computer failed. Any ideas what I am missing on my computer?
I checked the version on my Nuvi and it shows the 2009 date.
My friend purchased a Nuvi 360 2 weeks ago and I walked him through registering his unit and signing up for a mygarmin account only to have him told that the update was available but at a cost of $69. He is going to contact customer support to see why he has to pay for the update on a new unit. I checked his version and it showed 2008.

Did you have MapSource installed on your computer before you did the update? If you don't use MapSource, then there's nothing to update on your computer.

.

If you get the update DVD, does it include Mapsource or is that a separate DVD?

Two phone calls to get my free 2009 Map Update

The first time I called after I registered my StreetPilot, one of the ladies at Garmin told me the same story about Garmin is not releasing the 2009 until early May, and she was not even sure the free update offer is still applicable for recent bought units... ....

A week later, I was thinking that it would not hurt to call again. So I made a second call, I was so glad that I did, because this time, a really nice guy picked up my call and offered me a 2009 update right away, taking my shipping address and so on in 5 minutes. No hassel at all.

In conclusion, whether you get luck or not, it depends on who you are talking to at the point.

Update

1.5 hrs to download 1 hr to install. updated mapsource on computer and 200w. works great. you wouldn't believe the difference between city nav 2009 and metroguide usa version 5. so i deleted metroguide. I'M SOOOO HAPPY!!!!!

Got my update for Nuvi

Got my update for Nuvi 750
For those with slow connection, A download manager is included where you can pause the download and continue. Mine downloaded at 25K with 4 connections and was all done in 24 hrs. So . . . . thats not bad for download. Faster and cheaper than ordering CD. I burned a DVD with my download, and instructions and marked it with the code required for future use if needed. I purchased mine 1st of April 2008. IMO when you register it, your unit serial number is recorded at Garmin and any update connects your unit with Garmin again where all the information is verified.

Update confusion

Ok. I'm confused. I checked for an update and was offered a free update for download or a DVD update for $10. This was offered for my 76CSx - likely because I only very recently purchased and registered the 2008 map set for that unit. So far so good. I chose the download and installed it and the maps unlocked to my unit without a hitch. I selected the entire map set and a bunch of topo maps and sent them to the unit. Cool.

Next, I connected my brand new Nuvi - which I only registered on Thursday - and went back to the my.garmin.com site. I logged in and checked for an update for the Nuvi. I was offered the 2009 update for $69.00. WHAT? I'm utterly confused. I just bought this unit last week and registered it on Thursday but I'm not being offered the free update for it. I already have the maps due to the update I received for my other unit but I figured I would still need an unlock code in order to send the update to the Nuvi.

Hmmmmm.... Ok. I then figured what the heck, I'd try to send the new maps to the Nuvi and, when it whined that they weren't unlocked for that unit, I'd have to contact Garmin and find out what to do.

I tried to send the maps to the Nuvi. To my surprise, it didn't say the maps weren't unlocked for the unit. Nope. Before it even got to that point I was informed that the maps I was trying to send were 1050.1 MB and only 515.3 MB was available on the unit.

Now, when I've updated maps in the past on other units (note the example with my 76CSx above), they simply overwrote the existing mapset so the size didn't matter. What's up with this one?

I hate running into stuff like this on a weekend when it's impossible to contact Garmin for help.

Update Two Units?

I have two units -- both qualify for the free 2009 map update. If I pay Garmin the $10 shipping and handling fee for one DVD, can I load it on both units? Or do I have to pay $20 and get two DVDs?

.

thrak, the problem is that the preloaded maps on the auto unit are contained in a file named gmapprom.img. And the maps you send (to any unit) are in a file named gmapsupp.img.

The preloaded maps are never overwritten by the maps sent from MapSource, while the supplemental maps always are.

Had you successfully loaded the maps to the nuvi, you would have gotten a message on the unit saying that the maps were locked.

When you run the map update program to a unit with the preloaded maps (as opposed to MapSource), the program overwrites the preloaded map file replacing it with the new maps. But when you send maps from MapSource, they are additional. That's why you got the space issue message.

From the sounds of your situation, you should be eligible for a free update on your nuvi, but some people have had some issues. You might try the site again, or wait and call on Monday.

.

Unknown with this release.

At the very least, you will need two different unlock codes.

I just installed the update

I just installed the update & I see a few new roads so far. So far so good.

space constraints

how do you know which files can be safely removed? i downloaded the 2009 map... and it tells me that i don't have sufficient space on my nuvi 200w... however, it also doesn't give me the option to "choose" lower 48 states... just tell me i am 39 megs short on memory space.

registration

when you register your device (after the 1 may cutoff) determines if you will get the update. i just purchased and registered my device on the 2nd of may... and during the registration process, it informed me i was eligible to receive the 2009 map update. now, when i log in the map update and product code are listed in my profile. i can download the update as many times as needed between now and august or so (has a cutoff date).

.

It's advisable to backup the entire nuvi drive before doing anything.

Then look in the voice and vehicle folders and remove any that you don't need. If you have made a backup, you can always reload them later.

Also, you might want to remove your POI file (POI.GPI) at least temporarily.

DO NOT DELETE ANY OF THE .IMG FILES!!

These are your maps.

Done!

My initial email from Garmin said:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to assist you.
Your City Navigator North America NT 2009 map update has been ordered. Your order number is xxxxx. It should arrive in approximately 2 to 3 weeks."

I then saw the download link on myGarmin and decided why wait? The upgrade went fine and error free. I wonder if I will still receive an upgrade DVD in the mail?

Thanks

Ahhhhhhh.... that explains the issue. Thanks for clarifying that for me. So much to learn about a different type of unit.

New Google Integration?

First Satellite Acquired -- Weird Date

I tried again to update my brand new Nuvi and am still only offered the update for $69. I checked the info page for my unit and I see this:

First Satellite Acquired: Apr 1, 2007

WHAT? Is this the reason I'm not offered the update for free? I just got this thing brand new from Amazon last week. I could understand the date shown above if it was a manufacturing/testing thing. Hopefully it isn't being used to determine when I bought the unit. I love weekends but not when I need to talk to support and have to wait.

Hopefully they will resolve this issue properly so I can update the unit properly.

I saw that, too. It said something about being able to transfer adresses (it might have said "coordinates") from Google Maps to your GPS. The URL was maps.google.com.

Rough time for me

Got the update, but I can't believe the problems I had doing it. Got it for free because I just bought a Nuvi 750. Did the download method...

First the download blew up at 14% and the page froze. I logged in again, restarted it and it continued from 14%. When I launched it, it said "Unable to extract - file is corrupt" (at 13%, interestingly enough!)

So, I downloaded it again with no interruption. The extract goes smo-oth; the install goes smo-oth. Got 2009 maps on my Nuvi. I'm happy!

But my PC is now a D-O-G! Everything I do is taking 3-4 minutes to respond and it's making me nuts. I spend half a day running anti-adware/spyware/virus utilities. I'm killing processes right and left trying to find it. I must've hard-booted 10 times! No go! Finally, I figure it all stared with the update, so I go to delete the 2 Gig downloaded .exe. No go - system says it's in use.
Wha..?? But, I've rebooted 10 times!!?

Had to reboot in Safe Mode in order to delete the file. Took the opportunity to run another spyware scan which found one last tracker. All is now fine - system behaving normally. Whew!

No blame to Garmin. I'm sure it's just related to my firewall, the aborted download, etc. I've got the Maps, but, Man!!!!

Just wanted to share the adventure! confused
