Hi Motorcycle Mama, Yes, I already had Mapsource on my computer. I have been using it for my older GPS a Map76S and was looking forward to an update.

.

Ok, well then, first check in your MapSource and see if maybe the update was installed to MapSource despite the error message.

If not, then try running the update again with your nuvi attached to your computer and it should update your MapSource maps.

I'm guessing that you know that you won't be able to install the new maps to your 76S.

garmin 2009 maps update

I got the 2009 update from Garmin but my subdivision of 5 years and the next subdivison over from mine of 11 years was still not on the maps! I checked Tom Tom and at least the neighboring subdivision off 11 years was on it out of the box. THEN.... I bought a MIO 310, OMG my entire subdivision and all the new subdivisions around from 1 year old was on it right out of the box!!

I'b bringing my Garmin back tommorow and get the MIO 210 i saw in the store yesterday. It had half of my subdivision on it while checking in the store. I think it has something to do with what maps they use. Mine uses Nav tech I think.

Mine stopped there, too

First the download blew up at 14% and the page froze. I logged in again, restarted it and it continued from 14%. When I launched it, it said "Unable to extract - file is corrupt" (at 13%, interestingly enough!)

But, after about 2 minutes it started again and everything went fine.

Take it back...

I would definitely take it back. I have found if there is a Costco in the area that their return policy is very liberal and often worth the membership fee to be able to return a product.

Updated my Nuvi 360 without any problem.

Now wondering if I can update another Garmin unit.

Re 2009 Map update

MyGarmin.com offered a free update
2 choices CD mailed $10
Download free.
I tried to order the CD because the file is quite large, 2.04GB, The order had error message at checkout in IE and
Firefox. So I went the download route. It took the better
part of overtime periods 1 & 2 of the Dallas - Sharks hockey
came to complete. I'm now into overtime period 4 and the
update is still installing on thr nuvi 680 now at about 35%
I'm hoping Dallas wins this one because I don't think that
Marty Turco has ever won a game against the Red Wings. At
least the winning team tonight will be tired. (update)
Dallas wins and the map update is at 67% it's 02:36 am

In Motown. I started the update at about 11:00pm. The file
was downloading about 350kb/sec on cable. (wired)

The install is still in progress and I'm going to bed.

I just purchased a 750....I'll have to check if i qualify for the upgrade...

Upgrades on 660

I find it very interesting that Garmin's giving some 660 people upgrades for free (I got one), but other people aren't (I think my dad won't be getting it). The only thing I can think of that's a difference is that he was "good" and registered as soon as he got the unit (before the upgrade was available). I never registered until they had me do it in order to search for an upgrade.

They should just say that if you bought it within "x" timeframe (i.e. 1 month), that you get a free upgrade, discontinued unit or not.

Re: Upgrades on 660

You should tell your dad to call again. It has been my experience that the service and concessions you receive from Garmin, depends on the customer service rep you talk to. A little persistence may get your father the free upgrade. When did he purchase his 660?

mem10123 I got mine on March

mem10123

I got mine on March 30, registered it and activated it on the 4th. that's less than 30 days yet I did't get the upgrade for free.

you get different stories based on who you talk to but the bottom line is that this unit will be discontiued soon.

Interestingly, Amazon has been raising the price on this unit. The cheapest it got on their website was $294 in April and now it's back up to $340

I just wonder if the price went up because the new ones sold will have the new maps or will be eligable for the free upgrade.

I would be interested to hear their execuse, keep us posted.

Puerto Rico Again
Hi again from Puerto Rico:
If you come to The island i suggest not to use you Digiwalk c230 because the maps its too out of date, we have to many new hdways too many nuew roads and to many closed roads, around 3 new expressway and a lot of trafic directions change and i do not understand how its posible thats you do not have a map update for Puerto Rico. If you take a look on the forums like poi-factory you notice the amount of people that have you products and you do nothing for updates. I make a call to Tele Atlas and they told me that they make an update every three months and you have the updates in six months , wow its incredible that google earth send updates every five months directly from tele atlas and your product cost a lot of money compare to google earth. What happend with Mio cooporation? your only interest its on sale the product. I hope you make a fast solution for this issue, because we can't trust in mio gps.

Re:Puerto Rico Again
Hello, I'm sorry currently there are no map updates for your gps unit and I do not have any future release dates. although i heard they are shooting for this summer. However I'm sure any misdirections/missing addresses will be corrected then. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us at 1-866-646-4477, someone will be happy to answer any questions you might have. Have a good day.

2009 upgrades..

I have a nuvi 260.. I registered as soon as I got the unit (before the upgrade was available). I purchased it on march 28th, registered it online on april 4th. Checked today and found I was eligible for a free map upgrade.

Use the download method rather than ordering the cd. I didnt even call in like others had to search for an upgrade, it just showed up as avalible for me to use. Hard to understand how some are coming up as eligible and others arent. very confusing.

Got mine today from Garmin

I got My DVD in UPS today..it was ordered the 1st and they said 4 weeks...well it was 4 days. I registered my 660 on April 2nd and just clicked the link to get my free upgrade...didnt have to talk to anyone..

My 2009 Map Update for my 660 was free

I called Garmin last week and they had just set up the servers to provide updates. I had mine the same morning. They didn't say anything about which models were to receive the updates and which ones were not. It would seem to me that you should. Go figure.

Update from Garmin on a 660

Just talked to my dad, apparently he was griping to Garmin today about the lack of an upgrade for his unit. They offered him the 1/2 price upgrade, then basically told him if he didn't like the policy, tough you-know-what.

Then, later on, they called him back and said that due to complaints, they are changing the policies, and come Wed (May 7th) that it should allow him to download it for free. No clue if it's real or not, but for everyone who couldn't download it right away, give it another whirl on Wed!

2009 Updates

I received my Garmin Nuvi 750 in December 2007 and registered it April 1, 2008. I logged in to myGarmin account today and found the map update available for download. I'm downloading the update now.

I did not expect to be able to receive the 2009 update at no charge. Great work by Garmin to make this available for no charge for people that recently registered their unit and thanks to the posters here for making me aware of it!

Not to insult you dude, but NOBODY (least of all - Garmin) has any idea whether your unit is turned on or off, nor does anybody care. Your device receives, but transmits nothing. Big Brother really is not watching. They base the free update on the date of registration at MyGarmin.com - nothing else.

Joel

Actually, the "first hit" is stored in the internal memory of the unit. While they can't "see" you, they can tell when the GPS unit first became active. The GPS does NOT transmit (put away the aluminum foil hats), but it does record the first time it gets satellite reception. So, if you got the unit on and active prior to March 1, then you will not get the update. I don't know how it works, but it does. My "first hit" date matched the day I turned my newest unit on. Pretty cool. Guess they are going to keep us honest. smile

Isn't that kind of like stealing from two companies? You make Costco eat the unit you bought and Garmin to eat the cost of the mapping. It is simply my opinion, and you know my opinion usually stinks, but to me it sounds like you are trying to cheat the system. It is the situations like this that cause the map updates to be expensive and the policies to get locked down. Garmin's usual "we'll give you everything" attitude has slowed down considerably, at least that's what I have noticed. Possibly because so many people are trying to get something for nothing? Just asking, and I am in no way saying you are a bad person, just wondering what the rational is behind taking something back that was not broken just to get over on someone. Paper maps are extremely expensive, so it makes sense that a digital map would cost a lot. I think seventy bucks is pretty reasonable, but again, that's just me.

Again, I am in no way saying you did anything wrong, but think this kind of attitude is why mapping is getting expensive. Kind of like the story I heard about the person getting "freebies" from Garmin and selling them on eBay.

Thanks, and please, I am not trying to start a fight, just curious about the reasoning.

I've taken also stuff back

I've taken also stuff back to costco (magelan 4250). You are paying with your membership fee for such a liberal return policy. Look at it as one of the perks for beeing a costco member. Costco has taken into an account, the returns its members do in the annual fee. I dont see a problem with returning stuff to costco - you are paying for it. As for the Garmin update - they are not playing fair too - they didnt anounce their "free update policy" in advance. I bought my nuvi 670 less than 2 weeks ago, AFTER I was left with the impression that i'll get the update. Than a week and a half later I was told that I have to buy it, because they have discontinued the 6xx series and they are not going to support an End-of-life product with free updates. Another important "buying decision" grade informatiom omitted from the web-site.
I bought unknowingly a discontinued product and I was lied to, about free updates BEFORE I even bought it! This is what I call treating a customer like crap. I have no problem with giving them a taste of their own medecine.

What speed!...

for your reply. I have not received the Nuvi 350 yet, but it was purchased through Ebay.com, as was my Nuvi 360. Got a very good price on both. I realized that "blue tooth" meant little to me...at the time, but went for it anyway. The 350, believe it or not, was sort of a "backup" for our cruise to France, and one for my wife's car. I am tired of remembering to "switch" the Nuvi from one car to another. I would think that they would honor their promise...who knows, it might come with it already installed...cross fingers!

Got my refurbished Garmin Nuvi 350 this afternoon, logged on to Garmin.com, registered the thing, and updated it with the 2009 update, all in 1 hour 18 minutes. No begging, calling, nothing!...Garmin, you're the best!

Just to shed a little light from the other side. I am a refunds clerk at Costco so there isn't much I haven't seen or heard when it comes to the members returning merchandise. The return policy is not an upgrade service to get a newer better one, and that is why they have gone to a 90 day return policy on a lot of electronics. There are going to be more changes coming because of member abuse of returning merchandise for no good reason. I have even seen Memberships revoked because of excessive returns. I wouldn't be surprised to see GPS in the next change. Some merchandise we get credit on. A lot goes to salvage for pennies on the dollar and again some we get NO credit for. Do you think Costco is going to eat all the losses. We all pay for it in the price of what we buy. No one would believe the waste that I see on a daily basis. My warehouse refunds on average $250,000.00 a week. Granted some of it is resalable, some not, and when I buy something at Costco I'm paying for part of that loss. Just some input from the other side of the counter.

Nuvi 750 And a 2006 Star Venture between my legs.

v.2009 Arrived today. A flawless install.

The giant box arrived today with my plastic encased CD in it. There was room for 8 of these plastic display cases in there, but just one was inside.

I turned off the Garmin Lock on my Nuvi 680, inserted the CD and followed the directions. Easy.
I did not time it, but is must have been at LEAST 90 minutes to complete the install. Maybe more. I checked for supplemental updates and there were none.

I logged into my garmin.com and there was the s/n and update info already in there. No need to register. Cool.

Tomorrow I test out the new maps.

So, I downloaded it again with no interruption. The extract goes smo-oth; the install goes smo-oth. Got 2009 maps on my Nuvi. I'm happy!

But my PC is now a D-O-G! Everything I do is taking 3-4 minutes to respond and it's making me nuts. I spend half a day running anti-adware/spyware/virus utilities. I'm killing processes right and left trying to find it. I must've hard-booted 10 times! No go! Finally, I figure it all stared with the update, so I go to delete the 2 Gig downloaded .exe. No go - system says it's in use.
Wha..?? But, I've rebooted 10 times!!?

Had to reboot in Safe Mode in order to delete the file. Took the opportunity to run another spyware scan which found one last tracker. All is now fine - system behaving normally. Whew!

No blame to Garmin. I'm sure it's just related to my firewall, the aborted download, etc. I've got the Maps, but, Man!!!!

Just wanted to share the adventure! confused

map updates

I had a note to them about anm update for my Nuvi 760. I'll let you know if they give me one.

2009 updates

I am updating my SP c550 as I am writing this.
updates was free as I just purchased it > 4/30/08
will know how it as soon as it is installed.

Peace.....

It seems everyone has to

It seems everyone has to add their two cents worth, depending on their point of view and that's ok. But here is my take. When I ask Garmin about the free update, I happen to be talking to the same cs person that told me a couple of months ago, that she would be happy to give me a free update when it came out. However, she explained that with the new system Garmin had initiated, that it was not possible anymore to do as they had done in the past. I usually don't get a new map every year but this particular version, 2008 was a particularly bad one and I felt I needed to get a new update. She agreed but nothing she could do. As for Costco, every time I go their to buy something, sales people are always encouraging me to buy and If I am not happy, return it. In fact, often I have asked Costco on line CS, why they won't tell me the price of a Garmin unit when the price is hidden for a month or so, and you have to wait until it is announced, officially. I tell them I understand why they can't reveal the price yet, but want them to understand that I am about to purchases a unit and if I knew the price of the unannounced unit....I would wait to buy it, instead. They always tell me..go ahead and buy it and if when the new unit price is announced, and it is cheaper, I can always return the one I bought and get the newer one. Am I trying to get the best price I can? Am I trying to save money? Just like Costco and Garmin, You bet I am. Am I chearting Garmin? Cheating Costco? NO WAY! I would not do that.I don't return anything without a reason. I had two Garmin Nuvi 680's that kept getting the dreaded lightening bolt and gave Garmin months to fix or repair the problem..it was't..so I returned both of them and got one that does not have that affliction and I would do it again. That's my right and I am not cheating anyone. Well, that's by two cents worth..that's my story and I'm sticking to it...lol. And If Garmin or Costco want to change their rules or return policy...that's ok by me..I'll always play by the rules. I'm sure someone out their will have an opposing view and want to share it. That's ok. You can be you and I'll just be me.

Can't Update

I can't seem to update. I got the DVD in today. I connect my Nuvi, run the setup program. It looks like it downloads some info from Garmin, asks for the product key, and then says it can't communicate with the Garmin server.

This sucks when Garmin goes out of business and I need to reinstall this update should my Nuvi crash.

So, I have the DVD I been waiting for and can't update right now. Hopefully this will resolve itself because the setup program tells me to contact Garmin tech support but isn't kind enough to provide a phone number.

got the update

Registered my unit in early March - a couple days ago myGarmin did not list an update for the 2009 maps.

Today I went back to the site and a download was available - that was great - downloaded the file (took 23 minutes) and now I'm ready to go.

First, I have a couple questions:

1) Installing the update to the nuvi seems straight forward - a few months ago I installed Mapsource 2008 to my computer from a disk that Garmin sent me - will this downloaded update file update mapsource 2008 to the 2009 version on my computer?

2) If I decide to dump my computer's drives and reinstall my operating system, will I be able to reinstall Mapsource map on my desktop using the same codes or product keys that I have now?

3) And, will I have to install Mapsource 2008 first from the dvd then update it using the downloaded 2009 update? - or just install the 2009 update by itself without having to use the 2008 disk (in other words, is the 2009 update disk a stand alone install for Mapsource.

thanks

Have you noticed that you now have more streets that give you the speed limit now that you have updated? I find that most streets in the area are indicated a speed limit on my unit now.

for the speed limit? what kind of alert should i be expecting because i haven't brought my nuvi360 for a test run since updating ...

Lots of trouble, but done

Well, finally I was able to speak with the Garmin server after many hours of trying. Then it failed because my system drive is not c:

When I installed Windows, it installed windows as H: because I assume the install detected my card reader and assigned it letters. After a few years like that, I never had a problem until now.

So, I went into Admistrative tools, wrote down the names of all my drive letter assignments, renamed all of them, went to the computer store and purchased an external hard drive, attached it, formatted it, made sure it was named c: and tried to reinstall. Of course, I could not contact the Garmin server.

If you haven't noticed, I am really beginning to hate Garmin.

Anyway, could not contact the server.

Today I could not contact the server for several hours, but finally it did what it needed to do and installed.

The install took close to two hours and updated both my Nuvi and Mapsource.

I reported a mapping error to NavTeq a long time ago and did receive a reply back over a year ago that they updated their database. It was a pedistrian bridge that was marked as a vehicle bridge.

Still not corrected in this map update so whenever I route to a destination from my house, I am usually routed over a river that I can not actually cross.

I did notice a few new streets in my city are in the map now. Haven't had a chance to play with POI's yet to see how updated they are.

Just spoke with Garmin

Just spoke with Garmin support. She confirms that version 2009 is just an update and I would have to keep version 2008 on my HD and mapsource for the update to work. But what I can't figure out is if v2009 is just an update to v2008, why is v2009 1.45GB and 2008 is only 1.25GB. Seems odd.

2009 Update

I registered my 750 in March and Garmin sent me the 2009 update free of charge.

4.40 Update

Garmin has a 4.40 update out for the 600 series now, something to do with retail maps. I am not sure if this would have addressed the issues I was having or not, but it may be worth updating before installing the 2009 maps.
