newbie

I just got mine this past week too, and i was wondering if anyone had any info on whether or not the update would be free. plug and download?

Update

How much is the new update? Thanks!

.

If you go to the my.garmin.com site and register your unit, it will show what updates are available and what the cost is.

update

I purchased my download online at the Garmin site. It downloaded and extracted. Now I am trying to load it on my Garmin and it says my computer doesn't have enough free space. What do I do? I thought it already loaded to my computer and I was now downloading it to my hooked up Garmin. Also I had to choose between three areas to download. Do you have to download each area seperately?

Free space

It sounds like you are going to have to free up some space on your computer hard drive .Suggest that you move some files and save them on a cd or sd card to re-install later.Examples like pictures, videos poi files etc.You can go to my computer and click on local disk drive to see how much space you have available.Did you buy the upgrade or the full install 2009 maps?

On the Garmin sight when you look at the full install for City Navigator North America you will see this note. Note: You cannot use this product to update the maps on your preloaded Garmin device. To order updated map data for your preloaded Garmin device, visit the Map Updates page. The update version requires you to have old maps already installed for installing the new 2009 map update.

Once you get the new maps installed on your computer and then installed on your gps you can delete them from the computer.

Look at this post.It sounds like someone else had the same problem. http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13650

2009 map update

Just got a nuvi 360 with the 2008 map on it and they told Me the first time I logged in after registering that I qualified for a map update which I got. I did not have the 2008 long enough to compare the two though.

Install instructions now posted at gpsmagazine.com

If you want a step by step instruction, there is a new article at gpsmagazine.com

I installed my copy over a week ago and the instructions are correct as posted.

Also, I have already noticed three fixes in my area in the new 2009 version. I like this upgrade so far. Glad I bought it.

It depends on the area you live in as to the amount of changes in the 2009 maps. The reason I updated was that the Austin maps for 2009 included several new major toll roads that were missing in the 2008 maps. This makes it very beneficial to me to upgrade. Each person needs to make their own decision as to map update changes in their area. Check the Garmin map viewer for changes in the 2009 maps for your area.

Free space

Charlie, you might want to try using a friend's PC that has at least 8-10 gigs of free disk space. I had the exact same problem and finally did the upgrade from my work laptop which had 20 gigs of free space. The upgrade will take about 2 hours. Good luck!

NUVI 200

I am curious -

I just purchased and registered my NUVI 200.

On Garmin's site, it gave me a code and unlock code. Do I need to do anything with these? The GPS seems to be working out of the box.

Thanks,

Randy

The update program asks you for the unlock code while updating the GPS.

I used the search to try to find a post and it is not there!

Map Updates

Hey Everyone! This is my first post.

Just wanted to let everyone know what happened to me.

I was unaware of the ability to download the 2009 NT Map Update(s) up to 30 days after you register your new garmin device @ garmin.com otherwise, after 30 days, you would have to purchase the DVD (or SD/MiniSd Card) for the upgrade.

So it was about 2 weeks after my 30 days, and I called Garmin to complain that there was no documentation about the '30 Day' free upgrade. So I asked them to allow me to download the upgrade with my account. Instead, they just sent me the 2009 Update DVD via UPS, only having to pay for the duty.

If you complain enough (Within reason) Garmin WILL sway your way. They Are a great company. I am very happy I went with Garmin and not TomTom (or anyother one for that case)

Cheers.

Free 2009 Map update

I bought my Garmin Nuvi 350 on March 26. After reading this BB I signed on to Garmin to register for the first time. After loading some S/W so it could find my device to register, I was told that my unit was eligible for a free upgrade to the 2009 map. What a deal! Didn't have to beg or anything! I am downloading the map right now. Over my DSL it will take about 1.5-2 hours.

I just got my first one on

I just got my first one on the 19th of May and I went to garmin.ocm and registered and it told me that I was able to download the update for free. Be sure to have enough free space on your computer because the download is 2GB and it needs to extract into a little more than 2 more GB. That process takes a while and then it needs to load the new map onto the device and that can take about an hour in itself. You will also need a USB cable to connect it to your computer.

nuvi 200 2009 map update

On the Nuvi 200 you will have to remove some files from the unit to create enough space for the new maps to download.

just completed the download purchase...

I went to the Garmin store did the download purchase of City Navigator North America NT 2009 Deluxe Unlock and just finished loading it to the nuvi 350.
It takes about 9 hrs on my system to download from Garmin, then about another hour to write to the GPS unit.
Just be patient and do other things while putting it in the background while loading.
Brand new streets in my area on on there. I'm updated for a while now at least.

2010 update

I can't say this for sure but those who have said they are wishing to forgo the 2009 update that they do qualify for and opt for a 2010 update, I do not think Garmin is going to allow this. For the future updates I am sure they are going to keep the first fix in place to see when it acquired sats for map update qualification. So I think if you qualify get it as it might be your only chance at a free update.

Well, this IS thread 12434 and I found it the way adcusnret suggested.

My problem is that the quote I found using "SEARCH" referenced thread 12434, but I can't find the quote (see above). It must have been moved to another thread - but which one?

thanx for this thread...

it's been a while since i logged on here so i never knew they came out with the update till i saw this thread. i'm not exactly sure what has been changed since last year's version but i ordered it anyways.

I also got a free update to 2009

I recently purchased a Nuvi 680 from Costco ($350) and when I registered it informed me I could upgrade for free. Their information indicated that a number of roads in the Sacramento area had been updated. It was a very long download and several hours to upload. I made sure my battery was fully charged before I attempted the update.

I can't believe it.

I bought my 660 last June. Sent it in for warranty work, they sent back a refurbished unit. It had a different serial number so I asked Garmin to change it on MyGarmin page. When I logged on today I found I was qualified for a free 2009 map. Woo Hoo!!! grin grin grin Guess they went by the install date on the refurbished unit. I hope whoever buys my 660 will find the 2009 maps useful. I decided the Zumo 550 is what I needed for my motorcycle. But downloading 2.04gb is taking a long, long time. v rolleyes

Nuvi 200 2009 Map Update

I wish Garmin had a lower 48 update for Nuvi 200 users. We have to pay the full price for the North America update and only are allowed to install the lower 48.

Update Problem

So, I just bought a nuvi 760 and registered it on Garmin's website on May 24. Obviously I should be entitled to the 2009 update, but I couldn't find any information on where to download it.

I called Garmin and was told there was a problem, and that I'd be able to download it later that day, or the next day. A few days have passed, and I'm still not able to download it, so I called Garmin. I spoke to Dana, a helpful service rep, who told me they've been having some problems with a "bad fix date." This is preventing people from downloading their 2009 map update. Basically their system thinks you started using the GPS before you actually did, and thus aren't eligible for the map update.

Just thought I'd post it here in case others were having problems getting the update as well.

BlueFrog

2009 map update

I don't know wheather any body else had noticed it or not but even the latest map doesn't have the correct information. I am talkin about Latest North America 2009 City Navigator map. In my area the departmental store which was closed in oct2007 is still available on the new maps. many roads are not there. I don't know how to fix these problems?

Fix? You might want to become a reporter?

Go to this site NAVTEQ

http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-external/secured/submi...

And report the errors. And maybe by the next fix or two if they have someone in the area they will change it. I wouldn't wait on them, the world is a big place.

No idea. However, after the update, I see the SPEED LIMIT on the map pages. I love having the speed limit on the map. No more wondering what the speed limit is or if it changed when I wasn't noticing. The speed limit is right there on the screen.

That alone makes it worth the time to do the free upgrade. If you aren't eligible for the free upgrade then I can't tell you if there's a compelling reason to upgrade or not.

GPSMAP 60CSx Maps

I am a little confused concerning the maps for this unit. Can I use the City Navagator on it? If so which is best to buy, the DVD, the SD or micro/SD with the map pre-installed? I am thinking I would want to install a 2gig micro SD then purchase the DVD and load the map on the Micro SD. Not sure how big the Micro SD with the map pre-installed is. Maybe someone that has this unit can assist me. Thanks!
