2009 Update

Received my update on Friday from Amazon.

1. Had a problem after install. C550 opened with the message "Can't Unlock Maps." Searched the Garmin knowledge base and found I needed to edit the file gmapprom.unl on the C550. It had an unlock code from last year's update and the new update. Had to use TextEdit (the Mac equivalent of NotePad.) Once I edited out last year's code, it worked fine.

2. I'm a little dissapointed in the lack of changes in the places I have checked so far. A freeway ramp that I reported removed to Navteq over a year ago is still there and I'm told to take it to get to work.

Taking a 5000 mile trip in June and I'm more concerned with the roads I don't know than the ones I do.

Any chance that someone who

Any chance that someone who already has the 2009 update can check to see if the 2 new toll roads (1-30 and I-45) in Austin, TX have been added to the map?

They have been on Google for some time but do not appear at all on the 2008 update. It has been pretty difficult as I live right near the interchange between the 2 roads.

Thanks

Roads in Austin

130 (toll road) is on there, and there is a road that runs off of 130 that says "45 (toll)" that appears to run East/West. The 45 toll road is just North of Pflugerville. Zat help?

2009 Updates

I too occasionally find some updates and new roads which appear on MapQuest or Goodle but don't even make it to the next MapSource updates.

I think one or the other use "TeleNav" instead of NavTeq, but even still.... you would think they should be at LEAST as accuare and updated as the competition.

2009 map updates...

Hey everyone,

I'm new here...this is my first post...woohoo! Just to add my .02 cents. I just got off the phone with Garmin and when they start rolling out the Navigator 2009 maps they will send an update DVD to those customers that have recently registered their new product with the old 2008 maps. He said they will automatically ship it to the address you used during registration. smile

That's awesome! I don't know when they are sending my update, I guess I'll if I don't get it within a couple of weeks I'll give them another call. Are there significant upgrades from the 2008 map or is it just your standard update with new streets, etc?

Rudi

Try before buy?

Is there anyway to preview the changes?

There are a couple major road changes near my home, that would be worth the upgrade for sure.

But the new roads are less than 6months old, and I don't want to upgrade if they won't be in the update.

What and Where?

Let me know where the changes are, and I'll tell you whether they are in the update.

Go here http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavnt.jsp# and click on the link in the MapSource Map Viewer box on the right of the page. Right now it says 2008. Should change to 2009 soon. rolleyes

No problem updating

Just finished updating both of my Nuvi's without a hitch. Saw that roads were added in the two areas that I wanted!

I think you will have to ask Garmin that question. It will probably matter where you got it and when.

I can confirm that 45 (near 620) is on the maps for 2009. I live in Round Rock. If you email me, we can get together and you can check out any sites you need. I found several roads that were missing last year are now in place, but there are a few that are not.

for your reply. I have not received the Nuvi 350 yet, but it was purchased through Ebay.com, as was my Nuvi 360. Got a very good price on both. I realized that "blue tooth" meant little to me...at the time, but went for it anyway. The 350, believe it or not, was sort of a "backup" for our cruise to France, and one for my wife's car. I am tired of remembering to "switch" the Nuvi from one car to another. I would think that they would honor their promise...who knows, it might come with it already installed...cross fingers!

I Just talked to Garmin. Maps should be available next Thursday.
I just registered my Garmin today and they couldn't gaurantee that I wouldn't have to pay for updated Maps.
He said to check next week.

Who would honor their promise? The seller on e-bay? The units are used, and unless the seller transfers ownership to you with Garmin, you won't be able to get any kind of support from them - let alone a free map update. There have been several warnings posted here and on other GPS related sites about buying these devices from auction sites, because they are a high theft item. No insult intended...........

I purchased refurbished

I purchased refurbished through tigerdirect.ca and registered with Garmin. I get 1 year warranty and Garmin says my 2009 map update should arrive in 2 - 3 weeks.

C-340 2009 map update

Did the 2009 map update to my C-340 today. The install went flawlessly. Cannot believe some thing worked for me first time!

I was wondering how to update mapsource on my PC and went to it and MAGIC it was updated, also. You can select which version you want (2008/2009) on mapsource on my PC and see some of the differences that the update makes. Real slick.

Could see a lot of good changes the update made. However, still some boo-boos on the maps. Maybe next update will get them. The ones I know about don't bother me, but the unknown ones scare me.

Really a happy camper with the update. Recommend to do the update.

Radical difference between "refurbished" from an authorized Garmin retailer, and e-bay. I only hope (for the gentleman's sake) that he gets what he pays for. As I indicated, I was not trying to insult the person, only trying to warn that several people have had bad experiences after buying off e-bay when they tried to get support from Garmin. My fingers are crossed for him........

The updates are out! I am downloading it now. They changed the site this morning and now when you go to myGarmin and go to the maps section they offer you a download of 2009 or a disk for $10.00. It's over a 2GB download.

I just got off the phone with Garmin.....

I just got off the phone with Garmin. The Rep checked my S/N and said that anybody who got their first satellite hit after March 1, 2008 is eligible for a free update to 2009. Just go to MyGarmin and you can download for free or purchase the disk. Great deal. I got my 660 last Tuesday. The file is downloading now.

looks like their servers are already being hit hard. I registered my 680 on April 11 and i got the link on mygarmin to the free download but I am only getting speeds of 500 kbps. This will take forever to download 2.04GB.

Where does it say $10 for disk

I just when to the Garmin site and logged in. To get the update disk, it's $69.99.

Please tell me where you saw $10?

frainc I believe it depends

frainc

I believe it depends on when you purchased or rather when you registered the unit on mygarmin. If you look back in this thread several emails form garmin have been posted suggesting only if you purchased the unit after March 1 2008, you will be eligible for a free update.

OK, just ordered my Disk

My unlock for my 750 was Feb. 20, 2008. So full price, oh well. Should be here next week, rather have the disk than download all that data.

Downloading!

Interestingly enough, a day or so ago when I entered my Serial # it said it had no record of it, and now today it asked me to connect the GPS up, and then it said I could download the free update (or pay $10 for a disc).

The download speed is pretty good actually - a 2 GB file and I'm averaging about 700 kB/sec or so. Jumps between 550 and 1200, but I'm excited they let you download!

Anyhow, just thought I'd share with everyone, so if you purchased a unit recently, register it and you will hopefully be set!

According to Glo, the Garmin Customer Service Rep I talked to this morning, it's based on when the GPS Unit actually got its first satellite hit. I guess they can tell. At any rate, if it was turned on after March 1st you should get the new maps.

I have the update too

I bought the 2008 update on Feb 2. I guess they felt sorry for me so they figured they would offer it to me also smile

I wonder if there are hundreds of people all downloading right now?

I qualified for the "free"

I qualified for the "free" upgrade since I got my 780 last week.

Install completed

I finished the download and the installation. It took around 45-50 minutes to install after the file unzipped itself (I was in a meeting and don't know how long the unzipping took, but I think it was around 15 minutes).

The update went fine. I now have the 2009 maps. The POI files were untouched.

Stupid answer

Well i send a leter to Mio Tech asking form map update because in Puerto Rico the maps is to old, we have 15 new hdway, too many transit direction change and big error if you enter an adrress and that's the answer from the people of Mio tech.

"Dear Ariedwin, Thank you for taking time to report your comments on MioMap. Your feedback will be treated seriously and processed as soon as possible.
Please understand that we will not keep you informed of the progress; nevertheless, if the information you provide is accurate and complete we will do the best we can to resolve the issue(s) in next update or upgrade."
!!! what a mess!!!

Huh?

Not to insult you dude, but NOBODY (least of all - Garmin) has any idea whether your unit is turned on or off, nor does anybody care. Your device receives, but transmits nothing. Big Brother really is not watching. They base the free update on the date of registration at MyGarmin.com - nothing else.

If you read his post again, you will see that Garmin told him the FREE update is based on the first time the unit CONNECTED to a satelite, that is when the unit recieved the first satelite signal. His post doesn't say his unit was transmitting to a satelite (which are are right, the unit is a reciever only).

I would think it would be very possible for the Garmin unit to keep track of the date of the first satelite lock. This is the actual date you start using the unit, not the day you register it.

It does show Avery Ranch road connecting connecting to 183. It does not show the connection of Neenah between Parmer and 183. Guess that came too late. Also, yesterday I was coming home from the airport and noticed the problem on 183 and the exit for 35...It has the exit about 1/2 mile too late. Checked and this was on previous versions also.

Any benefits of having the actual DVD?

From what I hear, people eligible for a free update can download for free or get the DVD for $10. What advantages are there to having the DVD in hand?
