anyone update with a mac yet?

It really doesn't matter

farrissr wrote:

The problem will be how in the world can you tell without checking the unit what map it has installed. They could put an ad on the box...."with new 2009 map"...

I don't believe you will find a store or internet seller willing to open boxes and start them up to see which map is installed.

I believe if you buy one now you would get a free update but please don't bet the farm on it....

If you buy a unit after the new maps are released, and it still has the 2008 maps on it, you would definitely be eligble for a free update, using the webupdater when you register your unit.

Online Map Updates

It would be nice to receive frequent, incremental map updates online. I would pay for a service that keeps my maps up-to-date incrementally. I hope Garmin folks read this post.

RE: Online Map Updates

The concept sounds good but in reality the "updated" maps we currently get from Garmin/Navteq are at least a couple years old as it is. Whatever "incremental" updates they'd offer would probably be as outdated as the main releases. This is why many people are electing to update their maps every 2-4 years since the annual updates bring so little change. I don't think incremental updates would add much value using their current strategy for updates. If Garmin/Navteq could refine their cartography implementation to have more current maps available and utilize corrections and submissions sent to their site by users in a more timely fashion, then I too would consider paying for incremental updates.

Success!

FINALLY, I found a seller at Amazon.com that will actually ship the 2009 disc. After two canceled orders from one company, GizmosForLife sent my disc by UPS yesterday. I should receive it Tuesday.
Now I see that Amazon.com itself is selling the disc for $58.99 with free shipping. I paid $60.53 including shipping. But I did have the $25 gift card which brought my total down to $35.53.
I love my amazon.com credit card. I get a $25 gift card about every three months, based on my purchases. This is not an advertisement, and no POI files were hurt during the creation of this message!

2009?

I just installed the 2008 update - guess I should have waited another couple of weeks prior to getting the free update from Garmin. It is early this year...

No...you did the right thing..

No, I think you did the right thing...the more recent updated map you have the better. Especially if you use your unit ofter like I do. Personally, as my rule of thumb I generally wait every other year to download the new maps....you'd be amazed how many business, especially gasoline stations and small ma and pa shops go out of business. Sadly but true.

MapSource Map Viewer

MapSource Map Viewer at http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavnt.jsp# allows you to view their current map. At this time they are showing 2008. When they post 2009 AND it show a section of road that I'm interested in, I will purchase it. I have '07 and it has 98% of what I need.

Thanks, Rick, I ordered a copy from Amazon this morning for the $58.99 and free Amazon shipping:

http://tinylink.com/?lKu478aMlq

When ordering, I was told that the shipment would go out in a few days. But just hours later, Amazon reported to me that the package has been shipped UPS. Now I can only hope that Amazon ships from Nevada as they often do for me--if so, I may have a delivery in a few days. The UPS Tracking Number should tell me where the package's travels originated later today.

2009 Update with Mapsource?

I just ordered Garmin's 2009 update to its North American Version 8 City Navigator NT. I should get it next Monday. When I bought my Streetpilot 2730 last year it came with the City Navigator NT V8 and included the Mapsourse program for Trip and Waypoint Management. Does anyone know if the update comes with an updated Mapsourse program. I sure hope so, because I use it all the time. I would appreciate your response. Thanks to all - this is a great site and I look forward to contributing to it - I'm working on a POI list of all Texas Wineries by Region.

I was told by Garmin that

I was told by Garmin that the new 2009 map CD has a new capability that lets you load the maps on your PC like MapSource. I was told to call tech support to walk me through the procedure of loading the maps on the PC because it is not straight foward and it is a new feature on the City Navigator CD. I hope it works. If not I will request a MapSource CD.

2009 Map

Below is an answer directly from an email I received from Garmin regarding my question...

Please note that map updates are NOT free of charge, maps are $69.99 plus tax and shipping where applicable, If your unit was purchased and registered after March 1st 2008, and you have City Navigator North America V8 or City Navigator North America NT 2008 installed on your unit, you are entitled to one free map update for 2009. If your unit already has City Navigator North America NT 2009 preloaded to it and your registered you are NOT eligible for a free map update for 2009. If your unit was purchased and registered prior to March 1st 2008 with older mapping preloaded to it you are not eligible for a free map update, you must purchase the map update if you choose to update your Garmin product. **********

************For customers that own the Streetpilot C330 units wanting to update there units with the new 2009 map update, you will be able to update your unit, however, your unit is very limited to the amount of memory that it contains, therefore when you order a map update you will be given the following options to update your unit: Update just the LOWER 48 STATES, OR JUST THE CANADIAN PROVINCES with the bordering US STATES, OR JUST A WEST QUADRANT OF THE MAP, OR JUST AN EAST QUADRANT OF THE MAP UPDATE, you will not be able to update all of the mapping on this unit because of its limited internal memory. ******************

*********Canadian Customers are encouraged to order these map updates thru a local dealer, if ordered thru MyGarmin the updates will be charged applicable duties, taxes and or fees**********

The update will update the maps in mapsource. Updates to the Mapsource program itself can be had by clicking on the Help button (top menu) and clicking on the "Check for Updates" button. This will update "features" of the Mapsource program.

Question regarding multiple units of Nuvi

I bought a 660 and a 680 last Christmas.
Do I need to order two 2009 maps, or can I just use one/

TIA

You need two if you want to update the maps on both.

Always the question.

I have updated so many of these types of products in the past and found them not to have the changes I had expected. I think I will wait and see how all of you like your updates...

Selling updates to the public

wellcum wrote:

Hmmmm, I've heard questions like that posed when computers started becoming more mainstream in the late 80's "How can the whole world have all their computers virtually networked together from household to household?" was a common one. The question is not necessarily for the consumer to solve but for companies that don't want to become extinct when more innovative companies solve these challenges efficiently.

NavTeq doesn't necessarily have to look at 6 million entries all the time but better utilization of the resources already in place is a good start. I myself have sent in updates of new roads for my area at Garmin's and Navteq's site 8 months ago but none of them showed up in this update. I'm sure as more roads and major changes in various areas take place, there are resources in various counties that list these changes. I would hope that cartography companies would utilize those resources in addition to the employees they have "beating the streets" so to speak.
Anyway, that's just my opinion. If you are going to sell a product to the public and tout it as an update with an MSRP of $69.99, then as a consumer we have to determine if it is worth the time and money to purchase and install it.

What they should do is make

What they should do is make the maps user interactive so a user could make a correction on the garmin or navteq site and they could verify and have downloadable updates say maybe once a month.

what model do you have? I

what model do you have? I have a c330 and just registered it 2 months ago...hope i can get the new maps as well.

Map Names - How do they decide on them?

I've noticed that every time I get updated maps the "name" changes when I look at the map setup screen. The 2009 maps list "Baker, CA Mojave National Preserve, Apr 2009" I always wonder how they go about picking the point they use as the name for the map set. I can't remember what it said for the 2008 maps or the City Select v7 I used to have but they were each different.

Google maps is only "up to date" in some areas. My daughter lives on Tulip Avenue in Belgrade Montana. The house and the street have been there for a number of years. Google maps still doesn't have any idea the street - or the ones around it - exist.

taslimm wrote:

Does any one know what the major change is there in the new update.

Greetings,

I updated my nuvi from '08 to '09 yesterday and took it to the post office and back home afterwards to test it. The upgrade went well without a hitch--maybe 75 minutes start to finish or so. Being my first nuvi upgrade, one reason for doing it was to get City Navigator on my PC in addition to the nuvi update.

Regarding what's new, check back to earlier messages and you'll find a list of the metro areas that received particular update attention. In the short day and drive that I've had the update, I can't say that I see any road updates in my area. But the business database has certainly been updated even here since new restaurants that weren't part of the '08 map are in the '09.

The other big change I've noticed is that for the nuvis that offer speed limit info on the map display (like the 7xx series), now most of the city streets I've traveled have speed limit data. The '08 version, for my area at least, only offered speed limit info along Interstates.

speed limits

Glad to hear that...

Update

Can anyone tell me how long the update takes to load into the GPS? Thanks.

I'm impressed!

I just got home, and my update has completed. The first thing I looked for was a road that has been here for over 5 years, but not on the maps. It is there, plus a new housing development across from my house is listed. They are still building houses there, so I was really surprised to see the roads there.
That is all I've looked for, so far, but at least SOMETHING in my town was updated!
