My current GPS crapped out on me for good so I am needing to purchase another. I know Garmin will offer one free update if your purchase contains old maps, but does anyone know when I could expect retailers to sell units with these new maps pre-loaded? I would like to buy one with the updates installed instead of having to order the disc and wait.

Garmin says there is no certain date and is up to the retailers to stock these items, but does anyone have any idea from past purchasing experiences?

Thanks!

Just curious what are the changes you found for the good? I've had the update for a week and a half and haven't found much change for my area.

I understand the desire to get the most up-to-date GPS without having to jump through hoops, so I see your point.

Let me offer one reason why getting a GPS now with the 2008 map and a free 2009 DVD upgrade is better than getting a GPS with the 2009 map preinstalled. With a new GPS and 2009 map, you will just have the current map on your GPS but will have no map on your computer. But if given a free 2009 update DVD, not only will you update your GPS but you will also install Mapsource and City Navigator North America 2009 on your PC. This gives you a lot more features and flexibility.

I purchased my nuvi a few months ago and it came with the 2008 maps. One reason that I updated this week to the 2009 map at a cost of $60 was to get the update on my PC which had no previous City Navigator.

CraigW, thank you for your

CraigW, thank you for your input. I honestly never thought about it that way, so thank you.

I hope this is allowed, if not let me know and I will remove this.

Circuit City has the Garmin Nuvi 200 online for $162.99. If you go to Best Buy (the actual store, not online) they will match the price. Use this 10% off coupon:
http://consumerist.com/assets/resources/2008/04/Coupon.php

I bought this just a few minutes ago and it was $156.96 after tax.

Download update?

Hi -

I'm new to GPS and purchased my Nuvi 260 last week. I'm happy to see that I will qualify for a free map update since I just recently purchased it.

Will I be able to download the free update or do I have to contact Garmin for a DVD?

I've registered on Garmin's website and I see that I've been issued an unlock code for MapSource, but under "map updates" it still shows none.

When the update is available, will it show under "map updates" and I download it from there?

This is a very informative web site and discussion forum - I'm happy to have found it.

Thanks!
Rich

Rich,
Welcome to the group it is nice to have you here;)

Miss POI

so christmas nuvis are out of luck?

Since I got my nuvi for Christmas, it would appear that falls before the March 1 date you mentioned. I guess this must be Garmin's way to compete with TomTom, no wonder they are losing share.

Anyway, as this is my first GPS, is it usually worth the cost to get a new map update?

Depends

It depends upon the road construction in your area. They completed new toll roads in my area about a year and a half ago. The 2008 updates did not have these roads (issued about 6 months after construction. The 2009 updates do.

Unless you find a definite need in your area, many users upgrade every two or three years.

Market Share is doing fine. Their stock price not so hot.
November 2007 = $122.00 a share.
April 23, 2008 = $44.52 a share.

Ouch!

Garmin Nuvi 780

Got the New City Navigator North America NT 2009

It was smooth sailin' for the install. In 55 mins it updated my maps on both the computer and my Nuvi 770.

I guess I'll have to make a call for an update for the City Navigator for Europe when I get the chance, as it has NT 2008 version of Europe.

You can walk a horse to water, but a pencil has to be led.

.

Version NT2008 of the Europe maps was just released in March. That's the most current version of those maps right now, so you are up to date.

Garnin Site

At the Garmin Site it is still saying No Updates available. For Both my Nuvi 650 and my 660..I have been checking daily to see if either Qualify..the 660 was just bought in April...so I assume...but then you never know..

Alot had to do with the Mapping vender issues now that they have signed a long term with NAVTEQ it should slide back up over time but with the market nothing is going up fast unless its Futures!!!

Does anyone know how to "install" this update on you desktop or was I reading something that isn't there. I have it on my unit now but was under the assumption you can install it to the desktop with th 2009 version

It won't likely show up on the my.garmin.com site until after May 1.

I love the 2009 upgrade.

I love the 2009 upgrade. Many updated POI and it activated my MapSource on my PC. smile

Thanks for this great

Thanks for this great information. I would have not figured out the map updates for at least a few months.
I purchased a nuvi 350 today. According to the unit it has the 2008 map on it, so I will call tomorrow to see about an update.

Are the updated locked so they will only work on one unit? My father has a C330 that is a year and a half old now that he has been talking about updating.

~SW

How?

How do you get the update by this Friday if Garmin 800-800-1020 told me they are not releasing them yet?

How do you get the map by Friday?

--
Thanks, Dave

.

The map update on works with a single unit. It comes with a single unlock code. If you want to update more than one unit, you must purchase additional updates.

Third party retailers have been selling (and shipping) the update for about 2 weeks now.

At the factory

Does anyone know if you can get any sort of special deals if you take a trip to the factory to get your update./ Can you even purchase it directly from the factory?

--
R/Tim NUVI 660, ETREX Vista, Rhino 120, zumo 660, nuvi 3790

.

Take it to the factory? In Taiwan? That's a long way to go for a deal.

On a more serious note, if you purchase the update directly from Garmin, you will pay more than going to a third party retailer. They will tell you this themselves.

Updates from Garmin site

Still doesn't say the 2009 update is available yet. Should get it since I bought this in April.

Update

I got my Garmin on April 2nd and sent an email to Garmin about a map update and got this reply:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

The conditions for the free who is eligible to receive a free update for City Navigator North America 2009 are still be determined. But the update should be released late April 2008 beginning of May 2008. You can check to see if you get the update for free by checking back at the link below when the update is avialable.

As I posted above, it likely won't show up on the my.garmin.com site until AFTER May 1.

2009 Map Updates

I've been lurking on the site for about a year when I got my StreetPilot 2720. This is my first post, so let me start by saying hi and I think that this site is great! Just this week I purchased a Nuvi 750 and shared the same concerns as everyone else that my maps would already be outdated. I contacted Garmin and here's the response I got last night:

the map updates aren't free,

the map updates aren't free, and you can only get the update if you've purchased within a year? bah.
is this the case for all manufacturers, or just Garmin?

That would be nice if "within a year" were the case. I bought mine in December, but I think the free update will not apply to it. I think we've all gotten too used to free Windows updates and free virus definition updates. Norton doesn't even give free updates after a year, which is why I dropped them and use free avast!

We all love "free", one of the most powerful words in the English language. However, Americans also love capitalism which says that companies can charge whatever the market will bear in a competitive environment. We vote with our dollars. If you don't like the deal, you don't vote for it. I don't need the 2009 update that badly. And we should all try to cut down on fuel use also, so that we are not voting for higher oil prices.

Map update policies differ with different manufacturers. But for most of them, the updates aren't free. The data costs money ... a lot of money ... that Garmin must pay to Navteq for the maps.

It's a real bummer that it's a crap shoot to update the map software.....I would pay for the update if I knew that certain updates in my area would, in fact, be included in the update.....

Soooooooooooo........ wait for the Garmin site to update and you can use the map viewer to check out your particular area. If it's updated then all is fine. If it isn't updated then skip the purchase. It's really not all that long to wait.........

Update

Updated my Nuvi 750 yesterday, and went well. I live in a small town in middle Georgia, and was surprised to see how many of the recent road changes were included in the update. Very pleased with the results.

I'm more concerned with places that I travel to that I'm not familiar with. Places near home, I could care less.

2009 maps on the way.

Hi all, I just purchased a nuvi 750 (tvnav.com-$335) on april 18th, and it came with north america 2008. I emailed garmin support and there sending me the 2009 update cd for free. fyi

I can't get no respect

I purchased my Garmin 780 on April 3rd and so far Garmin isn't sending me crap. I have emailed, called on the phone and pestered them in any other way I could think of and all I get is "we have not determined when or who will get the updates yet".

I bought my 660 back in November of 07 is it worth it to spend the money on the update?

Yup

Well, you paid quite a bit for your device, why not keep it up to date? Go to www.tvnav.com to get the update for about $68.00 delivered to your front door!

Patience is a virtue dude...... You will get a free update if you registered the unit after you purchased it. Remember, as Motorcycle Mama has said to everybody in this chain, May day is the key for Garmin. After that date, anybody who purchased and registers their unit after 1 March will get a free (one time) update of their mapping software.

Two related questions: when

Two related questions: when I get my update for my two day old 780 can I also use it on my 360, too?

If not, then I should buy the retail version of 2009, which I saw today at Best Buy.

But this bring me to question 2: if the answer to the first question is "no," then can I update both my 360 and 780 with the same retail disk? I would only do this because I have to wait another week or so to get the free update for the 780. But with the retail, I could perhaps update it today, along with my 360.

Update: it looks like the answer is no to both questions, from looking at other posts.

Thanks.

Two related questions

Answer to #1: NO

Answer to #2: NO

The update and retail update are the same and are for a single unit.

Sorry

Just be sure that Best Buy is selling the 2009 *Update* DVD which should be around $60-ish and not the full version of 2009 City Navigator for over $100 (which probably isn't out yet).

My last look at the 2009 maps still missed areas built here more than six years ago, even when I keep sending the discrepencies to NavTec...

Sheesh, what a company!

Does a refurbished unit qualify for a free update?

I got a refurbished C550 in early April.

Did you purchase it in April or did you get it back from being serviced in April?
