That would be a good "should I buy?" answer. There are a couple things I would like to see if they fix first. Too bad they do not post the 2009 update there only 2008 and NT v8.

Navteq Has Been By My Moms House

I finally found a change in the 2009 Update, my mother has lived on the same street for 20 years and while her street was always on my GPSr, for the 1st time my 750 has shown speed limit info on a surface street. Info was displayed for other surface streets in her town too. I have only seen speed limit info on Highways, Freeways etc.... until now.

Definitely have the cart in front of the horse this time. At least with last years update, you could see the new map and determine wether it was worth it for you to update your map based on what you saw on Garmin's web-site.

If all of you will wait until Garmin OFFICIALLY releases the 2009 update in the later part of APRIL you will be able to see the NEW VERSION 2009 in the VIEWER at Garmins website and then make a determination as to whether to buy or not.

This determination seems to only be affecting those who at all costs have to be the first on the block to have the new toy.

Mapsource

Being extremely naive about map updates (never done one), does new version 2009 update the mapsource for your computer? I had to call Garmin and get them to send me the Mapsource program after I bought my C340.

2009 updates

Follow the link below and it lists some of the enhanced updates included in the 2009 release.

http://www.tigergps.com/garminupdatenant.html

2009 Map Update First Impressions

Ok, I am one of those that wanted the map update ASAP because I wasn't happy with the last year's map. Anyway, for San Diego users, there aren't many changes at all especially in the newer neighborhoods. The corrections I sent to NavTeq & Garmin in December did not make it in this Map update.
The update takes approximately 2 hours to install and it does in fact update Map Source on your computer as well.

My advice is wait until you can see the map on Garmin's website so you can see if it is worth it for your neighborhood. So far I am a bit disappointed.

How do I overlay the 2008 map completely with 2009 ?

I have the 2009 update and tried updating my 650. It seems to only allow me to select a specific area on the map to overlay on the device. Then I am told there is not enough room on the unit to accommodate the update. Is there a way to overlay the entire map without having to pick and choose the cities ? How did you update DrewDT ?

Updating

That's odd, updating for me was fairly straightforward. I just ran the setup application on the DVD and pretty much chose the defaults. I checked on the update every 20 minutes to see if I needed to click anything and went about household chores while it was doing that.

I am using the Nuvi 760 but it should be any different for the 650.

2009 maps

I just got my Nuvi 650 in January. I am hoping I am able to upgrade for free.

Thanks, Rick, but...

Rick,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've just ordered a copy through Amazon from ANTOnline as well (as of Monday, 4/14, the ANTOnline website still claims to have 35 copies on hand). Unfortunately, Amazon Payments just sent me an email a few hours post-order saying that my ANTOnline order has been cancelled. No reason was given. I see that ANTOnline still has it listed on Amazon although I fear anyone ordering a copy will never see theirs arrive. ANTOnline's solo sales web site says 34 copies are available at $51.20 PLUS $30.75 S&H!! No thanks.

PS--Have you received your update yet, Rick?

I had a conversation with a Garmin representative about this a while ago. It was about my 200, but it may also apply to other units. Newer maps are requiring more memory. If the memory capacity of the unit will not accomodate the new maps in total, then the user will have to pick the areas he wants to update. Or buy a new unit.

Those having space issues should remove any unnecessary voice and vehicle files as well as any Custom POIs, music and pictures from their unit to free up space before updating.

2009 Changes -- none evident to me

I'd post or email an image, but don't know how.

If it updates like v2008, version 2009 should also update mapsource on your computer.

Sorry about this duplicate reply, I just noticed DrewDT had supplied the answer to this question on an earlier posting.

Cut Off Date

I got my Nuvi 360 the last of Feb. Has anyone gotten a straight answer on how far back Garmin will be taking care of us on the update. I'm just glad mine came from Costco so I can take it back if I have to.

Date of purchase

Does anyone know if they'll update free of charge those units purchased recently? If so, how recent would the purchase have to be? I apologize if this question has been asked already.

NW

Update

Don't quote me, but I'm sure that I read it here that somebody was told by Garmin tech support that purchases after March 1st would receive the free update. Again - do a search to see if you can find it here, but I'm sure that is what I saw....

Update and Space Issues

With the update disk, there are two ways of updating your GPSr. (that I have seen with the last two updates)

If you have your GPSr pluged in via USB, you will get the option to Update the GPS unit with the new maps. This process replaces the old image file with the new one so there really isn't any need to delete things on a basic unit. MP3's, pic etc, may have to go.

The other method is to use MapInstall. This will allow you to select an area an install the that area or region on the map.

I was in the same boat, originally I didn't have my Nuvi 360 plugged in and the second opton was the only one available. When I selected all on North America I was 500Mb over the units capacity. I plugged in my Nuvi and ran the program again and then I got the "Update" option. I still have 500Mb free.

This is a quirk that I ran across and I'm sure that is what is happening with others. Try out my method and it should solve the problem of space and accidental erasure of files as mentioned in another post.

Also, using the first method, the maps will be "gmapsupp.img" which is the same format as additional map installs like Australia or Middle East etc., and the update method will give you "gmapprom.img" which is the "pre-loaded" map format.

Hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me

I was just coming on here to say the exact same thing you just said. I reordered the disc, and after I confirmed everything, I went back to the page, and they had raised the price to the $51.20 amount. I still am on record for the original price, so I bet this order will be canceled too. I'm sure that is a misprint on their website for the shipping charges. At least I would hope it is a misprint. That sounds like a shipping charge to Canada.
I'll let you know if my order goes through this time.

A bit of info on the 2009 update

Here's a review of the new map showing which describes the metro areas that have enhanced coverage:

error when installing

Just received my 2009 update from GPSCity and everytime I try and install I get a setup.exe error. The update installs the map data on the computer and then builds the map data to load to the GPS but then when it tried to install the map to the GPS (nuvi760)it crashes. I have tried to install on two different computers and get the same error. I know that the software is communication with the GPS.
Just wondered if anyone else is having this problem.

WOW!

I am still listed on Amazon.com for the update, but I fear that won't last!
I just went to the antonline.com website, and they have raised the price for the update to $73.51 + $7.98 shipping. When I go to my link on Amazon.com it now shows the seller is Beach Audio, not Antonline, and the price is $58.00. Antonline doesn't seem to be a very reliable seller, to be associated with Amazon.com.

Map Udate, Not real happy right now!

Just got off the phone from Garmin and they said units under 90 days will be covered for free update. The problem is they said it could be 2 or 3 months before they release the update. Mine was bought the end of Feb. Sounds like a waiting game so the already purchased ones won't get a free update and they know people will hold off and buy new units when the new maps are on them. Buy letting mine and probably 1000's of units go pass 90 days they don't have to do anything. I ask about the missing cities on the basemap on the nuvi's from Costco and he played dumb to that also. Said he has never heard of a problem with basemaps on the 360s. I can't find Queens NY or Van Nuys on mine. Must be the drugs I'm on.... LOL. Am I begining to get a sour taste in my mouth just when I was falling in love with my Nuvi.

This probably doesn't have anything to do with your problem, but it made me think of my potential problem. I have a 6 year old HP computer that was advertised as having 256 megs RAM. When I got it, I looked at the system info and found 128 RAM. I called HP and they said not to worry, ignore the system info, it really does have 256. I've always been skeptical of that claim.

I see that map updates require a minimum of 256 RAM. If I try to update and if I only have 128, what is going to happen?

Error when installing

Called Garmin and the problem with the installation was that the USB driver on my machine(s) (actually tried 3 different machine ranging from 3 years old to 3 months old) needed updating with the driver on their web page. Once I installed their drive it worked fine.

The Saga Continues............

I just registered my CN 2008

I just registered my CN 2008 maps last week. Hopefully they will allow me a free update. I'll just have to wait and see I guess. I need to get the SN of my daughter's unit from her and register her unit and her copy of CN 2008 as well. It would be nice if we each got the update free since these are newly purchased/registered maps.

2009 Updates for new Nuvi

Anyone know if Garmin will give the 2009 map updates for free for a recently bought GPS? Just bought a Nuvi 680.

.

If you go to your my.Garmin.com site, it will tell you if there are map updates available for your unit and whether you are eligible for a free update.

Use an SD Card for extra space!

I also have a 200. Using an SD card, you can also go back and install the missing areas that wouldn't fit on your GPS itself. It did it with the 2009 maps with no issues. I have the complete content now on mine (including Canada and Alaska).

Well guess what, I don't think you will with th 09 either. My daughter's home in Desert Hot springs still does not show up, they've been in it 2.5 years! Oh well, maybe somewhere I will notice additions to the new version.

That's good to know. The Garmin rep told me that when you connect your GPS, its model is known and downloading Canada and Alaska would not be allowed on the 200. That's not just because of memory limitations but because you didn't buy a 250. You now have a 250 for the price of a 200.

You probably need to check back after May 1. But sometimes older units aren't included in the free update. But if you wait until after the official release date, then you will get the up to date information.

Did you just purchase a new unit? You've been here on the site for a few months now.

Update or not?

I can't decide whether I should update or not. I updated to the 2008 version last year in August. I wonder if there is that much of a difference that would warrant an update to the newer 2009 version.

We will be travelling this summer to the UP in Michigan. Not sure if the newer version would be of help with that. Maybe the POIs would be more up to date.

09 maps

you should qualify for free update to 09 maps. I’ve been pestering Garmin about their ‘lack of free’ policy and finally got an answer from them. If yer purchase is more than 6 mos. ago, forget it. They say when you buy your product, it has the most up to date maps in it. So, guess next time I buy, will be in February. That should qualify me for free update. I’ve got a 360 and a 660 and will probably get an 880 by the end of the year, but now, will put it off until next year. Oh, the maps you get elsewhere are the same ones Garmin will release. No answer to why the other vendors have the same maps before they are released by Garmin. Still, the Nuvi is one of the best, no, the best GPS I've used.

Installed last night..........

I installed it last night and sent a new map set to my 76CSx. It still doesn't include the street (or the surrounding streets) where my daughter lives in Belgrade, MT. The streets have been there for years. Oh, well. Hopefully the updated POI info will be good. Last year on a trip home from visiting my daughter I ran into some horribly outdated hotel info in one town and some really bad restaurant and shopping info in another town. I rely on that stuff when traveling so, if it has been updated properly, I'll be happy with the update even though my daughter's house still doesn't exist.

Installed mine last night. Not noticing any huge change as well. A number of local areas and highways are still not updated.
I really don't think there's the bang for my bucks for this update. Just my 2 cents !!!

2009 MAP UPDATES

Anyone knows how long I need to wait before purchasing the Nuvi with 2009 updates already installed?

2009 maps

The problem will be how in the world can you tell without checking the unit what map it has installed. They could put an ad on the box...."with new 2009 map"...

I don't believe you will find a store or internet seller willing to open boxes and start them up to see which map is installed.

I believe if you buy one now you would get a free update but please don't bet the farm on it....
