Wait for feedback

Some people on the site have ordered and are getting the map update this week. Perhaps their feedback will help you decide whether the update is useful?

Refurb

Just recently I sent in my unit for an antenna problem and they just sent me a new unit. Well refurb. Since I have a different serial number now and needed to register it again, it lists a new, recent date of purchase and reg number. What do you think the chances are of getting a new 09 map update free?

I called and all they did was look up in the same http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp place everyone else does and said no available updates but they still have not technically released the maps on their website quoting they are still in a "black out" period.

Anyone else encounter this last year? Or, for those of you that have "just purchased new" after the March 1st date, does it show a free update yet in their website?

Update 2009 Corrections

As this is a new thread it may be better to keep the subject title the same so we don't end up with two or three different ones. Just a suggestion. Good Ideal

2009 Garmin Update

I am new to all of this and I am getting a little confused, maybe one of you can help me out. I have gone to the Garmin site and checked for updates for my Nuvi 650 anad am told that no updates are available. Where is it that a lot of you have checked about eligabilty for a free update? Is it on line or are these postings related to phone conversations with Garmin? I would like to find out if I get the free update, my unit was purchased in Nov. 07. Thanks

Threads combined

I saw that a second thread was started on this same topic so I have grafted the two threads together and the thread is now a sticky at the top of the list.

Lets keep all discussions related to the 2009 Garmin map update to this thread please.

Miss POI

Sorry

I did not mean to make to many threads, I saw this one as more of a discussion about delivery dates etc..., The tread I started was intended just for people to post any differences they found in either the maps or POI files between CN 2008 and CN 2009. Hoping to make it easier for users to decide if the update was worth it to them.

better than last year

At least it seems like Garmin is more clear on their policy this year. Or so it seems.

I guess I should register mine grin

PaulAtl, you may get a free update from Garmin. I had registered my new 660 back in Nov.06 and then developed antenna problems with the unit at the end of Apr.07. I received a refurb on May 25/07 and had that registered and sometime during that summer was informed that I was entitled to a free update to v2008, can't recall if that was through Garmin emailing to me or from their website under myGarmin. I then put in my request for the update and then received the DVD for v2008 about 6 weeks later, around mid Sept.07. Don't know why it took so long to ship to Canada. No guarantees but that was my experience.

How do you get the "free" update for the 2009 map?

I just purchased a Nuvi 660 and will get it via UPS today. should I delay registering it to get the free map update or becuase it's supposed to come out at the end of this month should I go ahead and register? I would definitely like the 2009 update, but don't want to pay big bucks for it. Thanks for the help?

Mine is coming with v9 2008

Mine is coming with v9 2008 MAPS.

Some customer service will make you to fax in the receipt to see the date but few don't. So it is just matter of who get this.

Mapviewer

I re-called Garmin inquiring about mapviewer and they stated that Mapviewer would probably not reflect the 09 update until at least May 1st. They will also not have their copies of the updated 09 maps until the end of April. Only some select stores have access to the early release like gpscity.

I'm surprised that they do not show the new maps on Mapviewer yet. I would think they would want to advertise to increase their order requests. wink

2009 Update

PaulATL wrote:

Too bad they do not post the 2009 update there only 2008 and NT v8.

That's because they don't even list the 2009 update. When I put the SN of my unit into the screen asking about updates, it comes back and says there isn't an update available. Once they list availability of the update, it will be available to review.

PRICE?

Does anyone know how much they want for the 2009 update?

.

Around $60 (US)

I don't want to update,maybe

I don't want to update,maybe I should update map in 3 years.

Not 100% sure but...

I vaguely remember reading something on Garmin's website that said their "free upgrade period" is 30 days prior to the new one coming out. Basically they said since they pay heavy fees to NAVTEQ for the maps, they can't offer a long period there.

Also, for the record, I find it really silly that they release a 2009 upgrade in the 1st half of 2008!

Ordered mine Wednesday...

got it today, early in the mail $59.99. I suppose it's worth it, you never know. The way I figure it, It's worth $60.00 not to have my wife "miffed" at me for the duration of the days outing for not asking directions at the filling station we just passed!

Took me 110 minutes to load!

Driving through a cornfield...

I found a chunk of freeway (4 lanes each way), that my nuvi 350 doesnt see...

If I want to tell garmin about it, where do I go?

Do a search

Do a search at the top of the page for reporting errors and this is what you find.

update

is there anyway to just download the new map data to an SD card for a garmin 550?

MapViewer

Where on the Garmin site do I find mapviewer?
I have a 2 year old Nuvi 350 (and am a newbie on this terrific site) and don't know what I'm entitled to, if anything, in the way of updates.

Here's the map viewer.

http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/

If you log on to your my.garmin.com site, it will tell you what, if any, updates are available for your unit.

The cost of the map update is around $60 from third-party retailers.

I'm updating

I'm updating mine right now. Being new to this and still can't figure out MapSource, this one was a breeze. In the MapInstall, which is kinda like MapSource, I select the states I want maps for. When I click on them, they're highlighted in pink and I finish the process. The system then builds the maps. It's kinda long. Been going on for 45 min so far. I'm going to see how it works when finished.

Updates include more than roads

royalty wrote:

If the maps don't change much from year to year, skip two or three updates, put the money you would have spent away, and in three years you can probably by a new unit (with new technology) as the prices continue to drop, and get new maps with it at that time.

While there may not be many new roads in your area, you may still want the update for the new POI data. While traveling across the USA last year I ran into several places where the GPS data was out of date for POIs. I would gladly pay for the update if only to have the latest POI data. I want to know where the hotels, restaurants, stores, and banks are when I arrive in a new town.

2009 map update

I bought a nuvi 260 on 3/28 and then I heard about the new maps coming out, so I sent an email complaining how I'm going to have a 2 month old nuvi thats outdated. here's the response I got.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

You have the current version of the maps which is City Navigator version 2008. there is nothing newer right now. But your right at the end of the month you will receive a email about the update for version 2009. You are elgible to receive this at no charge. if you have any issues receiving this when it's announced please email me and I will make an order for no charge. The mapping updates come out once a year. And they are not free unless you buy a new device right before the release of a new version

Update from Amazon.com

I just ordered my disc from Amazon.com for $49.37 plus $7.11 for shipping. This isn't actually sold by Amazon, but through a third party, ANTOline. I had a $25 gift certificate from Amazon, so I am only paying $31.48 total for the update.

I was happy to see your posting as I have been monitoring Amazon and haven't seen the update appear yet.

After reading your post, I went back to Amazon and checked again. I can't find the update, whether direct from Amazon or from any of their "associates" or whatever they're called.

Have you ordered the City Navigator NT 2009 Update DVD? ...or something else? Can you provide a link if it is the NT 2009 Update?

Thanks.

Perhaps Rick got the 2008 update by mistake?

Looking in the AntOline storefron, I see they have the 2008 update for $49.37.

Perhaps it is the 2008, not the 2009 update?

2009 maps

I got my 2009 maps and loaded them onto my nuvi 650. I tried to defrag my garmin and it did defrag some files but the maps. It said it could not defrag them..

--

How much space

How much space is remaining on the drive? Defrag required enough room to move files around and each map segment is 80mb or larger.

It went fine

My install went fine. I took a drive to test it out and it's just like what the previous version was. There's no new roads or updates in my area so I will keep trying it out as time goes by.

Mike

Defragging is not needed for

Defragging is not needed for solid state storage. You only need to defrag a hard drive, not memory, usb key etc. In fact frequent defragging could decrease the life of your Garmin!

Free Update

Looks like I'm in luck . I bought my Nuvi260 on March 10th so this would seem to qualify me for a free update. I will see if they send me the e mail though. I have been subscribed to the Garmin update site for quite a while for my GPS Map76s and Mapsource but I still do not get any e mails from them about updates. Maybe the unit is to old/no longer supported. You can still buy the Map76 at GPS city though.

Rick5266,

Can you confirm it when you get the DVD?

I had paid $60 for the update from GPSCity so your price is even better.... especially since I had to order 3 of them.

2009 Update

Would someone with the new 2009 update check these coordinates,(N32.64059° W114.3844°), and tell me if there are viewable streets. This location is in the Yuma AZ Foothills area.

Thanks

WOW, that's fast.

Has anyone seen a summery of all the changes between the two versions? If not much has changed, it makes me wonder if the upgrade is worthwhile.
