Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 15, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

Sprint GPS service provider?

I just replaced my old cell phone with a Samsung Instinct from Sprint. Basically it's an iPhone knockoff, but with a few more features that I like. It comes with navigation capability. So here's my question. Does anyone know who Sprint's GPS provider is? The splash screen has TeleNav in very small letters on it. I know TeleAtlas, and I know Navteq. But I've never heard of TeleNav.

Garmin 765T...Is it about the destination, or is it about the journey?

Storing JPEGs on Nuvi 680

Any idea how much memory jpeg's eat up on this unit? Also, even though the download from my computer is in the correct order, the unit seems to ignore that in slide show mode. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Judy

Bad info on Petro truck stop in Gadsden, AL

The settings for the Petro in Gadsden, AL are wrong. Trust me I got to know the State Hiway Patrolman that lives in the apartments at the end of the DEAD END road that it leads you to. Lets just say he's NOT very nice at all. But like he said "it's a good thing that this is not his juradiction and he was off duty" now the local officer of Gadsden that showed up he was real cool.

Garmin 660

I bought a Garmin 660 and a Garmin Beanbag friction mount thru Amazon .com. The Beanbag came without a mount for the GPS. Any suggestions how to order one as I have not found a listing for one. Mfish

Proximity Alerts

When I set up a proximity alert, lets say 3,000 ft for a Walmart. How close does the Walmart have to be to the road I am driving on before my Garmin alerts me at the 3,000 ft point? Do I have to be 3,000 from Walmart or does Walmart have to be a certain distance from my path to alert me at 3,000 ft? If it is a specific distance from the route I am taking how far is it? Thanks

What is the intent for creating custom POI's for everything

My Garmin has thousands of internal POI's. I see that this site is in the process creating POI's on just about every business in the US. I am trying to understand how to use all these POI's. For example what is the benefit or advantage of having all the Walmart's, Bestbuy's, Kohl's, etc around the country. If I put this in my Garmin is it susposed to help me find these in another state?

Jihad THIS!! Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Cecilia, KY

I belive that I have found the birth place of Sparky. I have searched the area near his address on Google and I have found Frankfort Ky. Also nearby is Fort Knox, if I was Sparky, this is where I would hang out. They may throw out scraps every once in a while.

How to best use custom pois

How do I most effectively use custom pois. For example; the Yellowstone poi. It lists 80 points of interest. Once I install this in my Garmin will it let me "spell" under "Where to" and then locate these 80 points of interest or will they just show on my Garmin as I drive up on them?

Contributors of the week 2008-09-01

This week we are recognizing Tremblsi and Rocknicehunter.

Tremblsi, This week you took your camera out and got some really great shots of locations for our POI Files pages. It is really nice to know that I have an inventory of pictures just waiting to have files made for them.

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a Garmin Nuvi880 a week ago and have been playing with it. I started to look for addons/extras for the unit and that's when I found this site.

Just wanted to stop in and say Hi.

This Is It!!!! (RF modulator solution)

Like most, I was having a real hard time enjoying satellite radio (and GPS announcements) from the fm transmitter in my StreetPilot 7200. FM stations were constantly washing out the garmin's transmitter.

I drive hundreds (sometimes over 1000) miles a week and greatly rely on my Garmin.
