Wow

Wow, awesome job. This would be a great starting point for Miss POI.

One suggestion - can you incorporate attachments so that the icon and sound files can be linked to each project.

I like it! I like it!!!

I like it! I like it!!!

wow is right

I am not a programmer, and still a nuvi newbie, but that looks awesome...can't wait until I get enough experience to run with something like that!

Wow!

Awesome! If there's a prize (the poi-poi?) for most useful GPS related software of the year I'm thinking you're the winner.

Suggestion: Add a "tools" dropdown that allows for easy launching of other commonly installed software like Google Earth, Google Maps, Easy GPS etc. Maybe the information entered in your program can be automatically sent to one or more of those programs to be sure the coordinates are really where you think they are smile or to easily retrieve lat/lon figures for importing to your creation.

Let me know when you're signing up Beta testers!

Cheers

New Software

Looks like it's going to be great software.

Thanks so much for developing this!

So I came to the debate to use PHPGTk since PHP is my language of choice, or use Adobe AIR. In the end I finally decided to use Adobe AIR. So I set to work for about a few hours and have pretty much the structure finish, with some few functions working.

You will be able to add new projects, states and waypoints and also export to gpx, csv and xml. The tree is also organizable, meaning you can move folders around, waypoints around, etc etc. Yes, I stink when it comes to writing descriptions on software I make, so I will provide you with screenshots.

Hi WorldDrknss,

Will the software be “browser-based” (and can be used by both Windows and Macintosh platforms) or a stand-alone Windows application?

From the pictures you posted, it looks like a “Windows only” application.

If so, and being a Mac user, would you also consider porting it to the Mac platform?

Thanks for your time.

I am actually developing it under Mac OSX Tiger. It has a windows feel to it because that is what most members use. It will work on Mac, Windows and Linux.

I don't even have mine

I do not even have my GPS system unit yet. I just been hanging around and learning new things, and talking to people.

This looks like something that will ease organization. A great improvement over what we have now.

You can check out:

You can check out: http://worlddrknss.110mb.com/poi/poiweb.html if you would like to test a live demo of the prototype. The only thing that pretty much works right now is the "New Project", "New State", and "New Waypoint" in a test format, along with clicking on a State folder and adding a new poi.

This is being built as an application so some of the fields will not work on the web version.

Very nice

I would like to give you guys an update. I am struggling. I have the Update function working and currently working on the filesystems. I am working on the initial loading of the database and its giving me some fits. So when I get this stubborn part working I will provide you all with another update.

Update

Thanks, for keeping us all informed of your progress.

I'm sure you'll get the problem resolved.

How about .ov2 format?

Is it possible to have it export to .ov2 as well? That would help streamline the process for creating the TomTom 'user friendly' POI's.

Something Simple

After hammering at it for probably 4 hours straight I ended up finally getting it to work. And would you have guessed it was something very simple, that I was over looking. I just hate when that happens.

Side not to everyone: When I develop stuff, I post like crazy to keep everyone informed about every little thing.

Will it be able to import (ie CSV files)

Will it be able to import files (ie CSV files).
I have many XLS files that I save as CSV to upload here.

I use an Excel Spreadsheet that has 4 worksheets.
1. The entry sheet
2. the CSV sheet (Derived from the entry sheet)
3. The GPX sheet (Derived from the entry sheet)
4. The MGLN sheet (Derived from the entry sheet)

I make changes to the entry worksheet. I make sure to replicate the lines on my other worksheets to make sure they have the same number of lines as my entry worksheet. I save the XLS then I save each worksheet as a CSV and run Poi verifier, GeePeeX and Magellan Editor on the files. (Each in it's own directory). I think your g]program would make my life a LOT easier.

Vista Beta Tester

Looks really nice, if you need (want) a Vista beta tester let me know.

A quick update. The save

A quick update. The save function is now working.

EX:
Once you have completed all your work you can now save the complete database by going to FIle -> Save. This will save all your projects so when you start the program up again all your information is still there to continue to add to or modify. Now there will no longer be any need to continue to use Excel/CSV Editors.

Wow...

Very nice. Any way to make it so you can select which fields are visible when the POI is selected on the device??

Can I email you an .ov2 formatted POI? They differ from the .csv format by having only 3 columns in the following order: LAT - LONG - DESCRIPTION.

Alpha Release

This is an Alpha Release. The Export Functions and the About do not work.

Installation:
1.) Download and Install: http://get.adobe.com/air/
2.) Download and Install: http://www.filefactory.com/file/b6b23d/n/poimanager_air

This will preload with a dummy set of Projects, so you can quickly begin testing.

Some additional information:
File -> Save = Will save the complete database.
File -> Exit = Will save the complete database and exit the program.

FANTASTIC!!! and a couple of suggestions

Wow - looks VERY good! I have a couple of suggestions:

In light of POIs like photo radar and the like, would it make sense to include fields for warning distance, etc?

Also, it would be nice to optionally manage images and sounds associated with POIs as well thru the interface.

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion. As I do not know everything about POI since I am new here, plus I do not even own a GPS yet. Since this feature is also an important area to a POI I will add it.

wearlaz wrote:

This was suggested once, but since all the information is stored in a database, no more then just the location to the file can be stored at this time. As the application progresses I will work on this, but for now I just want to get the main parts working.

Alpha Release 2

This release contains some major changes. So here is a short tutorial on navigation the system.

The Menu Bar:
File -> New -> New Project : Opens up a new window to create a new Project. Information that you will need to provide include Project Name, State Name, and POI Name.
FIle -> Export -> * : Current does nothing. This is a Alpha Release
File -> Save : Saves all your information into a database.
File -> Exit : Saves all you information into a database and closes the program.
Help -> About : Current does nothing. This is a Alpha Release

Project Navigator
Selecting Project Name : Options include Deleting Project or Adding State.
Selecting State Name : Options include Deleting State or Adding Waypoint.
Selecting Waypoint Name : Options include Deleting Waypoing, Update Waypoint.

*All Buttons are located at the bottom of the application.

Installation:
1.) Download and Install: http://get.adobe.com/air/
2.) Download and Install: http://www.filefactory.com/file/f0927a/n/poimanager_air

This will preload with a dummy set of Projects, so you can quickly begin testing.

Alpha Build 3

This is one that most of you have been waiting for. This build includes the ability to export projects or individual states in a CSV format, All other formats are still in the works.

See Installation Notes Above:

Looking for feedback from those who are participating in Alpha Builds.

This has been tested on Windows XP Pro SP3 32Bit and Mac OSX Tiger.

inport

question
got a Q i see you have export to file is there a chance of you add a inport so if like my problem i was editing a poi on school zones and garmin did not have it on the 2009 maps and the school has been there of over 10 years and really new to making poi's so thought it would make it easy to inport a poi and able to edit that ways

Its not a bug, its just a "dummy" project. Similar to dummy text also known as filler content for testing purposes.
