Will Your Next GPS Have Wifi?

I have been using my Garminfone for about a month now. This is actually my third GPS phone. The first two were a Pharos GPS Phone 600 with Garmin Mobile XT and more recently the Garmin Nuvifone G60. I must say that I really like this device. I have my T-Mobile SIM card in it, but I stopped using the data plan on it a few days ago.

Does map update mean POI...

When you update/upgrade maps, do the POI's get updated as well?

Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race

Yet, another use of GPS technology...

Today is the first day of the Gordon Bennett International Gas Balloon Race. This is a multi-day, distance race with gas filled (hydrogen and helium) balloons.

These balloons are very different than hot-air balloons.

This year's launch is being hosted in the UK in the Southern town of Bristol.

And now for something completely different...

Why do people speed on the freeway? With the exception of those grossly exceeding the speed limit, the general sentiment seems to be that the majority of commuters may be speeding several miles above the speed limit but doing so to enhance traffic flow in a relatively reasonable manner.

POI Locations

I love the POI 1,000,000 location site, wow it's awesome. I'm sure this is only going to continue to grow! There's just one thing and maybe I over looked it but...

Another use for a Garmin

Had to run alot of errands today. Before I left I copied and pasted my list into Powerpoint. (I use MS Office 2007). Horizontal orientation for the slides. I Saved the slide with my list as a JPEG file and transferred it to the JPEG folder on the 1450. I had a nice easy way to reference my "To Do" list as I made my stops.

Map Reading and Land Navigation

Just an FYI for anyone that is interested, here is a link to a fabulous book (PDF format) produced by the US Army on Map Reading and Land Navigation. Since there have been several discussions about paper map backups and such I thought you might get some great info out of this piece, I know I have.

AAA

I renewed my AAA membership by phone the other day and brought up putting coordinates in the tour books for the different listings. I don't know if this guy knew what he was talking about, but he said they would be furnishing coordinates starting with the 2011 tour books.

DOD made changes, and some GPS receiver's have issues....

I work at a TV station, and after chasing an issue with plant pulses, contacted Manufacturer who told me that the DOD (Department of Defense) made a change in the GPS data, and it caused (The Manufacturer's product) to slightly un-lock ever 12 min and 30 seconds...

Maximum Number of Satellites?

I'm just looking at the number of satellites my 1490T is using (11) and on the graph it appears that it has the potential to receive and use one more.

I'm just wondering what is the maximum number of satellites in the constellation that could be above the horizon at one time for any given place?

General Motors onboard navigation system

We just purchased a 2011 Buick LaCrosse and love the car. While we've been looking for this vehicle for a while, we were surprised to see that no dealer ever had one that did not include the navigation system. So the one we purchased has that system as well.
