It's much too early for complex mathematical equations. I'll come back later after I've had my screws tightened. mrgreen

The update wants to set a record, just like the snow/freezing weather.

Be careful what you ask for

News Flash from Garmin:

"Garmin International is responding to user comments that our City Navigator Map Update versions do not reflect the actual calendar dates when they are released. Garmin believes in reviewing and correcting our business practices based on user comments when appropriate.

In this case, we agree that map versions do not properly reflect the dates released and to correct this, the next map update, 2015.40, will be released in October 2015. Note that this release date is not in conflict with our "up to four map updates per year" policy.

Thank you for bringing this concern to our attention."

City Navigator NT Europe - 2 times per year

It could happen nickjr. The NT version of City Navigator Europe is now only updated two times per year. The NTU (Unicode) version still comes out 4 times per year.

And then what?

As soon as it comes out, one of two things will happen:

There will be a long list of, "I can't get it to work."

In competition with a long list of, "I'm not going to install it until 500 people do it first."

LMAO.

Especially when Garmin themselves state in their annual report that they're anticipating within the PND industry a 10-15% decline this year.

Not looking good at all but we'll see with time where all this is heading.....

nickjr wrote:

Could be but we came from a yearly update cycle to the "up to 4 per year" system that has happened every quarter since at least January 2009. On the other hand only having to go through this 2 or 3 times a year probably wouldn't be a bad thing.

In-dash units have annual fees($200+)for updates and are pricing themselves right out of the market. In addition, They are less flexible .... many do not allow your own POI's. What happens when you take another vehicle for a trip? Keeping one up-to-date is fun but to have a different one in each vehicle plus annual fees for each is just silly.

I'm even surprised that built-ins are still being offered!

I guess some are just slow learners.

Upfront costs for the built-in plus a map update fee for ONE year can pay for a NEW GPS every single year for a LIFETIME!

Nope ....just don't see this happening. I've used both and my nice little mid-range Nuvi 2555LMT beats out most (if not all) built-in units in cars .... all for < $200!

Wait till those that do in dash nav see what they have to pay for updates.

I have three cars with in-dash navigation systems, and while I cannot put in custom POIs the navigation systems (in three different car brands) all work great. One (the Lexus GS 350) even has the biggest screen available. http://www.lexus.com/cm-img/features/2015-Lexus-GS-detail-im...

Let's be honest, there is really no need to update maps quarterly, or even yearly. Updating navigation maps once every 3-4 years is plenty for 99.9% of people...and that's about when many people get a new car anyway. I doubt seriously I will ever get a map update for my in-dash systems.

As the years go by the number of people without in-dash navigation systems will become fewer and fewer. ["In-dash navigation systems, will enjoy increased penetration worldwide in vehicle head units, from 19 percent last year to more than 32 percent in 2018."] The holdouts without in-dash navigation systems are similar to the holdouts that refused to get a cell phone for many years, until even elementary grade school children have them. Do you have a cell phone?

But updating maps 4 times a year allows me to keep fresh in my mind the procedure of how to update maps with an external memory card!!! I've added the extra complexity of swapping between 2 memory cards as I do the upgrade, so I could always "Fall Back a Version" should I find something I don't like......

Surely you wouldn't want me to forget this procedure now, would you??

Just wait until they build a new interstate near you and you have to wait 3-4 years before it is on your gps map, you will change your tune about the updates then. I started out with a Magellan gps, had latest maps on it. A major interstate leg was completed for over 3 years and it still wasn't on the map. I found out that Garmin updates their maps 4 times a year and have had Garmin ever since.
