It's not just Flock

More and more LPR's are being setup everyday. The goal of flock is to have every major/minor road to have LPR on it that are also capable of cataloging the year,make, model and color of the vehicle, making your life safer (not).

There have been several crimes solved due to Flock cameras. I my self have no problem with them.

Brain f a r t in Pennsylvania. For the new plates a “zero” has a slash through it. The LPR cameras are interpreting it as an “8” causing people to be incorrectly billed.

It won't be long before law enforcement starts using Flock cameras to issue speeding tickets.

All they need to do is measure the time it takes for a vehicle to travel the fixed distance between cameras.

No more need for speed cameras or speed traps.

…many years ago (1950’s) on the West Virginia Turnpike. When you turned your toll ticket in it would be scanned and tickets could be issued. Growing up in W Va I found it humorous the cars on the side of the road waiting out the time so they didn’t get ticketed.

I wonder if they would ticket someone "speeding" in a construction zone even though it was Sunday or some other time when there was obviously no construction going on. I've often traveled through areas that say to slow down for construction when there were no workers or equipment present.

Figured this was just to get people to stop at the service plaza to spend some money.

When I lived in CT it was common for them to leave the "construction zone" for years after it was done. I suspect it was some shady tactic to add more fines if they pulled someone over. They would leave the signs up for 3-4 years after the work was done in some places.

On a few of the routes I regularly travel, I get off the interstate, take a shortcut and get back on again. Flock would detect this as speeding.

Also, Flock won't pick up speeders who make a stop between cameras.

Does anyone manage an importable list of Fl0ck POIs that would proximity trigger on a Garmin unit (something like the redlight list just for fl0ck?)

It appears other sites maintain lists but I wasn’t sure of a process to update it nicely from SD or have a proximity settings.

Sometimes one must weight the privacy concerns against having the person who hit-ran and killed your boy, captured; Or maybe recovering your stolen car; Or maybe abducted your girl. Think about that. Privacy only matters if you are committing crimes.

Im' not sure I'm willing to have my privacy and rights taken away from me that easily.

When I was in college, it was a thing to care about the environment. Why I even invested in a green mutual fund and lost my entire investment. My point is look at where we are today--nobody really cared and we have continents experiencing heat waves without AC. Because they didn't traditionally need AC. Pretty hard to find anyone to accept used motor oil for recycling here in PA, and as I go to and from work there is trash thrown all over the place.

How is there not a mass push back for invasion of privacy on all this? Years ago people sued for invasion of privacy and today people are just sitting back and letting it happen. I understand the pros and cons of all this but it's gone too far IMO.

People today (in general) just don't care for what some of us once considered "privacy". Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it just "is what it is". I could get pretty upset if I actually worried about it and that's why I don't. But when it comes time to vote for someone or something, you can be sure it's on my mind.

Privacy - as we knew it just a few years ago - is gone. It's not coming back, no matter how much we want it. There's just too much money to be made by learning every detail about you and using it to make (or save) a buck. And a growing majority of people willingly give it up... even embrace the idea of everyone knowing where you are and what you're doing. This is known as "social media".

Brave new world. But, take the time to try and understand it, at least. That just might open the door to some new possibilities for you. What doesn't help is complaining and "yelling at the sky" (although, I'll admit, sometimes you just *have to* do that - but the trick is to then move on).

Wait until most of this Flock/Nema data is hacked by other countries (which it probably has to some extent already). Who pays the price for that? Citizens, not government I'm sure.

I just got a new plate with one of the slashed zeros...

From what I've heard the cams just needed a little tweaking and time to learn the difference, all is fine again, you'll get properly billed now.

Normally, that is not used.

But before all this, I got a vanity plate (now, I would not, but at the same time, what does it matter, unless one is doing nefarious things). On Tuesday night, for only the second time ever, an attractive woman asked me what the plate meant. This is life, how conversations start, people meet, and one thing leads to another. It's like that new Progressive commercial and the dog park.

In order to verify it's a letter and not a zero, I used DMV. When I search with a zero, nothing comes up, and when I use a O as in Oh, it comes back. So I do in fact have a letter. It's virtually impossible to determine it's a letter when looking at the plate, but I think the letter is taller. I don't think two plates would be issued where they are the same except one is an O as in Oh, and the other a zero. Absolutely the slash should be there.

From what I read, SEPTA buses have cams equipped with AI. Right now, they are used to violate vehicles traveling in the bus lanes. Tomorrow, they will be used for much more, of course. They're already there, why not leverage it.

btw I see people blowing Lower Merion school bus reds. I think either they don't know 100% of their buses have stop arm cams, or, they have license plate covers, or, no registration anyway (third is highly likely to be the majority).

So, anyone who is against cams, the easy fix has two stages, in PA. 1, a dark cover making the plate illegible. 2. No valid registration

Fun fact in 2024? My vanity plate request was available, it's a reference to a band and a song, in PA. It was not available in other states I checked online, namely CA, CO, NY, from memory. PA is a really unique place, like the land that time forgot! Sorry but I take exception to the no reggie no insurance no license no inspection limo tints all OK, I seriously think one should not be driving if those are true. So Flock would be ineffective in PA imho.

The thing is, in and around the Philadelphia metropolitan area those things might get overlooked, but farther west in this state there are places that take all those rules very seriously. I know quite a few folks who have gotten tint violations. Plus, I listen to a police scanner in Delaware County, PA, I hear Upper Darby towing for no insurance and other violations all the time. I also doubt in the parts of the state patrolled by the PA State police that those things are overlooked, but the State cannot be monitored using the scanner.

We have flock camera on all roads leading out of our small city in Missouri,near St. Louis, and I have been comforted by them to some extent.

However, after a 50 years of good relations with our city and police, I was wrongly accused by a known bad neighbor and it became guilty until I proved my own innocence with photos and documentation.

One city sergeant was the lapdog of the accuser.

Soo.... Now my whole perspective of the city's credibility and the its police department is tainted along with the possible misuse of the Flock cameras.

I am torn with the lock cameras.

I love that they help solve crimes and track down criminals.

But I am still concerned about the potential for misuse, especially since there have been stores of improper use already.

I guess we have to give up some freedoms to keep some freedoms.

Like everything I guess, it has a plus and minus to it.

I not a big advocate for change and like things to the stay the old way but stopping progress also has it's disadvantages. Guessing more regulations to keep the balance in check for these devices but IDK honestly.
