But that's no guarantee that
But that's no guarantee that it won't still take 3-4 years to get that Interstate to the map. Well, maybe only a year for Interstates, since that kind of information gets picked up quickly. But Highways and streets still take a long time to get updated.

The more I use in dash
Especially when Garmin themselves state in their annual report that they're anticipating within the PND industry a 10-15% decline this year.
Not looking good at all but we'll see with time where all this is heading.....
I can definitely see Garmin's business declining. More and more people are buying vehicles with in-dash navigation systems, many of which come as standard equipment.
Wait till those that do in dash nav see what they have to pay for updates.
I have three cars with in-dash navigation systems, and while I cannot put in custom POIs the navigation systems (in three different car brands) all work great. One (the Lexus GS 350) even has the biggest screen available. http://www.lexus.com/cm-img/features/2015-Lexus-GS-detail-im...
Let's be honest, there is really no need to update maps quarterly, or even yearly. Updating navigation maps once every 3-4 years is plenty for 99.9% of people...and that's about when many people get a new car anyway. I doubt seriously I will ever get a map update for my in-dash systems.
As the years go by the number of people without in-dash navigation systems will become fewer and fewer. ["In-dash navigation systems, will enjoy increased penetration worldwide in vehicle head units, from 19 percent last year to more than 32 percent in 2018."] The holdouts without in-dash navigation systems are similar to the holdouts that refused to get a cell phone for many years, until even elementary grade school children have them. Do you have a cell phone?
Now that I have had my In Dash Honda I do like it more and more. It does let me put my POIs in it. But for trips the Nuvi will be our first GPS with Honda as backup.
That being said it still has it's flaws, no use while driving... except voice and that is just not good.
I found on Honda a sight they have that is for making apps for their cars. I joined and looked at making an app to control the unit from cell phone with Bluetooth and with out data. This is a good idea but as I have not written programs since basic and I am much older it was just much more studying than I wanted to do.
If there are any programmers on here go to Honda and sign up to make the apps. Be sure and use Android as that is what I want
. They have a studio in California with test cars that they invite you to come and drive and test your apps. From the photos it looks like it might be in the Google Complex as there is a sign with "no one except Google Employees beyond this point".
As I said, I don't think I will do this as I am old and it will take me so much brain work to learn the programming and I don't know if I want to do that much brain work for now. But it was a good idea and you never know what improvements others will make as they are wanting everyone who is willing to work on apps to improve the Navigation system. Might help indash navigation out in the long run.

Can't remember right of what it is called but there is a device that can be put in line that allows full usage of your in dash gps. I know some people with Fords that have it..

Just wait until they build a new interstate near you and you have to wait 3-4 years before it is on your gps map, you will change your tune about the updates then. I started out with a Magellan gps, had latest maps on it. A major interstate leg was completed for over 3 years and it still wasn't on the map. I found out that Garmin updates their maps 4 times a year and have had Garmin ever since.
Jery - who are you kidding? Garmin's map updates rarely (if ever) have major road/highway/Interstate completions http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/59/High_Five... until long (many times - years) after they are finished. You should already know that!
I live in the Dallas Metroplex that always has a lot of major highway/tollway/Interstate construction work going on. https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/91/c6/f2/91c6f2f4b... I've seen Interstate re-routing construction work that was completed 2-3 years ago that Garmin has still not gotten updated.
And, for your information, all three of my cars with in-dash navigation systems are more up-to-date with respect to major highway completions that I often travel than is my Garmin GPS, which I update as soon as an update comes out.

That's definitely not always the case. Two examples:
-a realignment of a major east side street (from I-40 exit ramp to Rte 66) in Flagstaff AZ was included in the map update that was distributed just months after the realignment was done.
-When US89 south of Page AZ was closed due to a geological fault/landslide, the very next map update showed the closure and routing was then made on the best available detours. When the temporary US89T opened, once again, the very next map update showed it as the preferred option.
Note: The original US89 south of Page AZ should be reopening some time this spring.
I wonder if state by state, or county by county that map update currency is due to the county engineers' effort to prepare and submit their revised maps to Here.com or whoever does Garmin's maps these days.
Thanks koot!

pb46 - Now you are beyond obtuse. I usually don't have much patience for people like you, but I'll go slowly just for your benefit. Pay attention now - and re-read what I am stating 3-4 times so maybe with some luck you can comprehend it.
First, you apparently have a problem with the following statement I made - (particularly the last sentence).:
"Updating navigation maps once every 3-4 years is plenty for 99.9% of people...and that's about when many people get a new car anyway. ***I doubt seriously I will ever get a map update for my in-dash systems.***"
Since I own a Garmin and I update the Garmin right away with each new update, I am fully aware of what the latest Garmin map updates are for the areas I frequently travel. I own three vehicles (of different brands) with in-dash navigation systems - model years 2013, 2014 & 2015. With that hopefully understood, I am stating that the Garmin GPS is never more updated than any of my in-dash navigation systems - none of which have ever been updated, and at least one of the in-dash navigation systems (the 2015) already has the latest maps anyway.
Comprehend this time? Or did you bump your head while rolling around on the floor like a doofus?

Update Frequency
Just throwing this out there from previous discussions: I-57 in southern Chicagoland had a ramp constructed to go to and from I-294. The ramp opened one week before the 2015.30 update, and it was on the 2015.30 maps. I have noticed road changes in my area, including secondary roads, updated within months.
New road
There is a new road that was recently opened near where I live. It turns out that the road was opened just a couple of weeks before the last update came out. When I updated last, the road was on the update. I did not expect this to occur for at least 6 months, even though it is an extension of a state route. So, some updates do occur fairly fast.

I'm just wondering
Is it possible the delay could be due to royalty payments, or licensing agreement conflict between Nokia (parent company of Here) and Garmin?
It just seems odd that Garmin is not following the norm of map updates we have been experiencing.
Case in point, City Navigator Europe has been on the servers since February 2nd, and still not released.
City Navigator North America is not even on the servers yet. I don't know what the average time a map has been released after it was put on the servers. I don't recall the update being put on the servers then immediately released.
As mentioned by other members, perhaps Garmin is scaling back the amount of updates per year as their policy states, UP TO 4 TIMES PER YEAR.
We may be in for receiving fewer updates although that is pure speculation on my part.
Having fewer updates is not a big deal for me, I certainly can live with that if need be.

Updates
TomTom just released their big map update earlier this week so perhaps Garmin's map update will be coming up soon. We had some really cold and snowy weather this year so that might be a factor too. It would be nice if they could have small daily or weekly updates to cover for the lost time.
Garmin Servers
Looks like something's happening.
I just installed the GE update 4.0.5.0 and now not only do I get Cannot access servers messages for Vehicles and Voices like before, I now get an error for the basic Checking for updates for the unit.
Maybe the servers are busy setting up the update ...

Up to 4 times a year!
If they only do 3 a year (remember it's UP TO 4 time a year), then they save a lot of money.
Of course, since they have been updating 4 times a year for a long time and they do cut back to 3, they will have a lot of disgruntled users because they think that they have been cheated by only getting 3 instead of the usual 4.

I've said this before, but Garmin needs to be going the route of letting users update more *often*, not cutting back if they want to have any hope of competing with smart phones and Google maps which has real time updates for all practical purposes.
.
Up to means just that, Up to. By rights Garman only needs to put out 1 map a year.
Garmin nuvi 350 Lifetime Map Updates NT 2018.10
107 days...and counting
Today, it has now been 107 days since the last map update...and we are still counting.
So, let's have a little fun while we wait...
Fact #1: The last update (2015.30) was released on Wednesday, November 12, 2014.
Fact #2: We know that 2015.40 will not be released today, Friday, February 27 because the business day has now passed and the update has not even been put on the servers.
Soon to be Fact #3: Chances are practically zero that 2015.40 will be released on Saturday, February 28th or on Sunday, March 1st, because an update has never been released on a weekend and the update has not even been put on the servers.
Soon to be Fact #4: Chances are nil that 2015.40 will be released on Monday, March 2nd, because the update has not even been put on the servers, and not once in the past six years has there ever been an update released on a Monday.
Fact #5: In the past six years there has never been an update released on a Friday, just like there has never been an update released on a Monday.
Fact #6: In the past six years there has never been an update released in the month of March.
Fact #7: In the last six years the longest period between map updates was 113 days, which happened twice - once in 2010 and again in 2013.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Question #1: Will Update 2015.40 be the first to be released in the month of March?
Question #2: Will Update 2015.40 surpass the previous 6-year record of 113 days between releases? Day 114 comes on Friday, March 6th...and we know Fridays and Mondays are both unlikely days since neither of those two weekdays have ever been used to release map updates in the past six years.
Question #3: How many days will pass after Update 2015.40 is put onto servers before the release will be made available?
update is not a big deal
I know several people that have garmin gps and I'm the only one that does map updates. I update twice a year and if I could not get the large JCV file I would not update the map.
I would venture 90% of Garmin owners seldom or never update their maps.
For the folks on this site it's a big deal.
However; IMO for the majority of owners it's not a big deal.
Most I know don't bother updating
Yeah most I know who have Garmin life time map units never update them. Its funny, they complain about maps being out of date yet don't want to take the time to update their Garmin. In two instances I simply too the GPS out of their car and updated the unit myself and put it back in their car and told them later.
It is a well documented problem in the 4.0.x versions of Garmin Express. Not that it is a big deal, because who really wants these silly add-on's anyway? But it would be nice if Garmin would at least acknowledge that their software doesn't work as advertised. So far I have seen no acknowledgement from Garmin that the "Vehicles and voices" function is broken, even tho it has been reported multiple times by multiple users in multiple forums including Garmin's own software forum. Sorry for the rant, it is just that Garmin can be very annoying when they don't admit to obvious issues.
