2009 map updates

I just received my Nuvi770 and it has the 2009 in it.

I bought my Nuvi 250 the end

I bought my Nuvi 250 the end of January, I spoke to Garmin, explained how I've been a loyal Garmin customer with 5 Garmin units under my belt, and asked if they'd allow me to get the 2009 update, since I was weeks away from the deadline, and they sent out an update dvd for me, should have it next week.

Gotta love service like that.

Done - Got It

Update to complete my postings. Used Acronis Disk Director to re-partition C: drive and successfully loaded 2009 NT on my C580. Next project is to see if I can download and use Map Source with this new map.

Updates

Has some useful additions, I just wish the updates would come faster.

Absolutely!

Absolutely you can, if you need any help in doing so, don't be afraid to ask.

Oct 15th?

So, I opened my 'new' Nuvi 350 and activated it on Oct 1st and registered it that evening, to which, of course, Garmin's website notifies me that I am able to download the new 2009 Maps update.

Garmin's site tells me that I will have this update available, for free, within the next 30 days of my 'purchase'/ registration.

BUT, I read on here that this 'free' update to those of us who purchased these discontinued units will only begin to be available on Oct. 15th.

I am content to wait until then, however, using the link that Garmin has given me this week is not valid and results in an error.

Am I to understand that this is because it will not be available until the 15th and Garmin is 'jumping the gun' by giving me the link and no explanation as to the Oct 15th time-frame, or is this simply a bad upload link and I should just contact their customer support?

I don't mind waiting, but I wasn't sure if this is just an error on their site or with their communication skills wink

Map Source

Downloading Map Source and installing it was easy!

Apples and Oranges

You are confusing the different Garmin programs. The new map you are eligible to receive for free is the normal one-time map update. In other words, you will only receive the 2009 map update.

The other program that Garmin will be rolling out on the 15th is lifetime maps. For a separate one-time fee, you will be eligible to receive quarterly map updates.

So there is no sense in waiting to download your 2009 map update. If you want the lifetime maps, that is something else you have to order.

2009 Map updates

I have had my 2009 map updates since May when I purchased my Garmin 360. Also, Wal-Mart carries the update for sale on disc.

Thanks GadgetGuy

I knew I must be confused.

Now, to call Garmin's customer support, since that link gives me an error....

Thanks again.

Yearly maps update? Not worth it !

Garmin should list what updated on their maps from year to year so that people can decide to update it or not.

If there are new roads construction going on in your area, you most likely won't get them show up on Garmin's next one to three years' update maps.

If new roads recently finished in the places you are going to visit, you won't be able to find it on next a couple of Garmin's update maps either.

Beside, Garmin should open source of their maps so users can customize it by adding new roads, routes, and so on. Not just POIs.

Not going to happen!

Garmin licenses the information from Navteq, so the likelihood of open source mapping is nill unless some form of hack becomes available...

Why can't Garmin catch up with road projects?

If open map source would be impossible because of licensing, can Garmin ensure their partner add all of new road finished in a time manner for instant within half year to three or five years into current updated maps?

Three months for map data collection and programming maybe too short. But if the road had been finished five years ago and still is not added into the Garmin's map database, is that something hurt consumers and Garmin itself?

I couldn't understand why Garmin can keep it up like it should be. I sometimes drove on a road being finished more than 3 years, saw the map break up with no road and heard nice voice "recalculating" from my Garmin c530. It really made me upset. Is this what I got from Garmin City Navigator North America NT 2009 maps? ....

25 bucks for a FREE Update DVD? I think I'm going to refuse this one, and let Garmin take the hit for it. Not quite the service I expected.

Oh thats isn't that special!

Ummmmm, Ok..At least we know why Garmin keeps the prices so High, It does cost money to take that hit as you casually call it, let see the clerks time you talked to, the shipping personal then the shipping to your address in Ontario Canada then back to them. Ya showed them! And that was one heck of a hit your going to give Garmin, then when they say no more updates on DVD's just downloads, we can all remember why.
Guess I have to ask, How many Packages have you received from the states? You had to know it was going to cost you duty! I did!

Depending on the cost of the unit and the cost of the map updates it may be a better deal to just upgrade every few years. The map update cost is about %25 of the cost of my last GPS, so I'd think twice before getting new maps.

I agree, and I am thinking that if I don't upgrade ever, after just 4 years I will have saved enough money to just buy a new one.

pay?

does one have to pay for updates?

.

Yes, typically one does. You would typically only be eligible for a free map update if you purchased a unit with the old maps AFTER the new maps are released.

Garmin is nice enough to prompt you to purchase new maps.

TRACY

60 Days

If its a discontinued model you will get 60 days to update the map for free. I purchased a 650nuvi and I have until Dec xx to update the map for free

Route change

It actually changed the route from my work to my house which is an hour drive. It has me get off the highway 3 exits earlier to take side roads which takes me longer. Don't know why that happened.

That's fine...

it must be due to some speed data update. Ignore it if you know the best route.

The best of GPS, at least in my mind, is to help you pinpoint yourself in the map, find a destination, and a route to that destination. I will be fine as long as the route is not too ridiculous.

I updated my C340 to the NT

I updated my C340 to the NT 2009 maps just before a trip up to the Florida panhandle last week. I installed it on an SD drive and switched back and forth between the two maps a few times during the trip (in the "settings" menu) - especially when driving across some recently renovated highways with new ramps and exits done over the last few years.

I know it was just a small sample (just a little over 1000 miles) but I saw no difference whatsoever between the two maps.

I'm wondering if I wasted $60 ????

It's always advisable to preview the map using Garmin's MapViewer tool before purchasing maps to see if they contain the data you are looking for.

You think you would be experienced with Garmin's sales department, with four units before your Nuvi 250 making five total, I bet you got at least one map update out of the other four to know there is shipping and custom broker fees.

Well that ain't going to happen, let me lead you to the UPS rates for custom clearance, and you will see that your Goverment ripped you not Garmin.
http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs...

Again stated this is why companies charge outrageous prices for products, because people think they can eat the cost of shipping because you decided you no longer wanted the product, How long have you lived in Canada? Have you ever bought a product from The United States of America? You had to know it was going to go to a customs broker.

If you don't want an answer to such a statement, then don't post it!

There is a road built 5 years ago in my subdivision and it still didn't show up on Garmin 2009 version map.

Fix maps yourself?

Does anyone think Garmin will one day let us fix our own maps? There was one brand (can't remember which) that would let you submit errors automatically, but it'd be really nice if I could load up MapSource and edit/delete/add my own roads.

On a side note, not every package that goes between the US and Canada hits you for Duty. I've received many packages with $0 in Duty. It all depends on what it is and how it is labelled.

Doubtful since they don't own the Maps, On the other hand the company you couldn't think of is TomTom and they own TeleAtlas and can do things like user edits.

The new vesion 2009

came out in May. It's like Street and Trips, it says say 2009 but it really is 2008 info. Very few items are updated. I got a nuvi200 in June for back up and upgraded for free and lost out because I lost the Canada maps. The free upgrade was for lower 48 states North America. I bought a 760 and have gone through the gambit and I'm waiting for the next upgrade of maps.

POI's and v.2009

I bought v2009 at Circuit City yesterday. I installed it on my Nuvi 200. It seemed to go all right, although I don't see "2009" anywhere, just 2007 and 2008.

The problem I do have is, when I tried to load a couple of new POI's, it never erases the old ones. Even when I try to just erase POI's, they are still there. Has anyone had this problem>

Bill

.

It sounds like you are talking about two completely separate things.

1. If you installed the 2009 UPDATE by RUNNING the program, it should have overwritten the preinstalled maps on your nuvi. So, how did you install it to your nuvi. If you sent the maps from MapSource, that is the wrong way to do it. To confirm the map version, go to Settings/Wrench > Map > Map Info.

2. Each time you run POI Loader, it creates a file named POI.GPI. This will overwrite any previous POI.GPI file on the the device. However, if you loaded them to the SD card and then IMPORTED them to the unit, you will end up with duplicates AND running POI Loader and selecting the SD card as the destination will not erase the old ones. With your nuvi connected to your computer with the USB cable, look for this file (POI.GPI) on your nuvi and delete it and then you can start over.

It's just older maps technology,

Paul here is the deep dish, Garmin's "2009 maps" being Navteq 2007 based will always be behind about 1.5 to 2 years in the map technology, they don't own the maps it's that simple. Why do you think people don't see streets that or developments that have been around for a while? Navteq owns a chunk of Navigon and guess what, Navigon gets the newest maps quarterly, even with the new "quarterly system" with Garmin they will always be older maps never new. Why would Navteq give the newest to their competion? they wouldn't

map update frequency

in terms of map update frequency, I prefer tomtom and igo/mio, new maps come out every three months. the only thing I don't like tomtom is that it uses TeleAtlas.

but still, traveling with an updated unit makes me more confident even though it is from TA.
