I typically only update maps every few years unless there is a route I take that isn't listed.
I had to update my 2720 to NT 2008 after listening to Jill continuously recalculate for 6 miles on a new freeway that was not yet mapped. It was worth the $70 to get her to shut-up
You know, this is getting to be a bunch of crap. You shell out $70+ every year to get these updates. Why can't the updates be done for free from the website.
I have other GPS units that you can download free map updates anytime they are available. Forking out $70+ a year for updates is a ripoff.
I think I'll sell my StreetPilot c330 and get something else better.

Same here, they seem to send the updates out very quickly. I purchased a Nuvi 770 last month from Costco Online. As soon as I registered it, I was notified that the unit was eligible for a free update. It had 2009 City Navigator 2009 NT on it so I think the update was to the European maps.
It works. If you read the comments listed for this particular Torrent, there are instructions for successfully implementing the map update without bricking your unit. Be sure to back up your software prior to updating.
I bought an 'open box' DVD 2009 NA Garmin update with a valid product key on ebay for $46, incl shipping. It worked well and have new, 2009 (really not 09 yet) maps in my Streetpilot C330, which I found on craigslist.org for very little money. My question: Can anyone else use the DVD? Is it worth anything to anyone? Does it have any resale value without the used product code? I suppose I could offer it on ebay as not having a product code but I wonder if there would be any demand or reason for someone to purchase it.
Why would I need it? My other Garmin, (Nuvi) has preloaded 2009 maps and no DVD backup in the package;
is my dvd now useless as well as worthless?
Does anyone know when the 2010 maps will be out? It seems with 2009 right around the corner they'd be releasing the new ones soon.
What's the major difference between map 2008, 2009, and 2010? I plan to upgrade my 2008 map on my c550, should I wait for map 2010 instead of buying map 2009? thanks,

The DVD would actually work for anyone that has (or purchases) a 2009 unlock code specific to their GPSr. But without an unlock code, you would be lucky to get $15 for it.
When I got my nuvi with 2009 maps, Garmin wanted $15 to send me the DVD. When I got an eTrex bundled with CityNavNT 2008, Garmin sent me the 2009 update DVD free and unlock code free online. Then I got Mobile 10 for Smartphones (w/2008 maps) for my Palm TX, all I needed was free 2009 unlock code online to use with DVD I already had.
Your nuvi has a North America unlock code which you can see logged into My Garmin, somewhere under managing maps. So I cranked that into Mapsource too. But I have not tried whether additional maps from that set (Canada) can be loaded as supplemental maps on SD.
From when you first buy it to get the free map update. i.e. I just got my 760 and am using it, so I won't be eligible in 3.5 months for 2010 when it drops.

I see your point. Old folks like me need details lol.
Anyone who first used their new Garmin nüvi or zūmo on August 17th or later will be eligible for a free map update if one exists within 60 days of the unit's first use.
There is really no point in upgrading if you have to pay for it and your current map is less than 3 years old. IMO -
The POIs on the unit should be taken with a grain of salt at best of times. (Too bad you can't touch them in the unit and correct them.) I doubt that those are updated all the time because that would involve a lot of labour. The maps are great but most likely will not have the latest streets either. IMO The GPS should only be used as a guide and you still need to look in the phone book for addresses and find out if the store etc. is really there. Sooooo . . . . the new map will be money wasted if your current map is fairly new. I say save your money and email garmin to open up the internal POIs to make the unit more useful.
Agreed. Do NOT waste money on Map updates if unit < 3 years old

I totally agree with you. It's wasteful spending to make Garmin richer when they market nearly negligible "updates". If you use your GPS in only a few places where you live/work, rather than travel all the time, you will NOT see HUGE updates from one year to the next. You may see small updates here and there, but nothing ground-breaking. For the money Garmin is asking for, even AFTER you spent hundreds (like I spent on the nuvi 760), just ask yourself whether it's worth it to throw more money in the air???

It would be great to get updates for free. I wish Garmin owned Navteq and gave the updates for free.
What ever happened to the Lifetime Maps from Garmin that were to be released Oct 15th. There wasn't anything posted when they didn't come out.
I contacted Garmin and I did inquire and the tech I spoke with said he never heard of that, but he did hear about the quarterly updates for Garmin products but with an annual fee. If this keeps the poi's and the maps more up to date then sign me up. I'm not sure what that annual fee would be.
I ran across an interesting video the other day about the GPS of the future. I would love to see Garmin and the other GPS companies get into this. As I understand everything would be automatically updated, not sure what the fee for this would be, and I would think that they would include regular road maps as we are use to seeing. From what the video shows you can still use this in a remote area, when you are in a cell site etc any updates are downloaded and then stored.

I must say that I am very impressed with my Nuvi 200w. My girlfriend got it for me for this Christmas and I can't say that there is a single flaw with the thing. I am currently updating the maps with the free map update that Garmin provides on their website, but am also looking for other feature to add, myself. Does anyone with a similar or the same GPS have any suggestions?

No one, I never said that anyone did, just that it would be great. I don't expect Garmin or anyone to give it for free, just that it would be great. I simply echoed what BJ stated and thought I would share that video of the GPS of the future. I'm sure that wont be free either, and I would not expect it to be. As I recall the subject of the quarterly updates was with a one time fee, not for free and I was asking what happened to it. I contacted Garmin and related what the tech told me.

Map Updates

I agree that you don't need to update the maps on your GPS unit the roads in the areas in which you travel haven't changed or have changed very little
And you should ALWAYS preview the maps on Garmin's website before you make a purchase.
However, it's important to understand that Garmin must pay NAVTEQ for EACH map license. Garmin does not own or produce the data.

Thank you for your time,
~Lance
Tell us who gives you ree maps evry time new maps come out?
You know, this is getting to be a bunch of crap. You shell out $70+ every year to get these updates. Why can't the updates be done for free from the website.
I have other GPS units that you can download free map updates anytime they are available. Forking out $70+ a year for updates is a ripoff.
I think I'll sell my StreetPilot c330 and get something else better.

And in the "good old days," I couldn't go down to the bookstore and get a new atlas or map book just because I bought last year's version.
