The official release date of the 2009 City Navigator North America map update was May 1, 2008.

I don't know that I would characterize that as "being out for a while".

The map update for the City Navigator North America maps has consistently been released once per year in the spring.

didn't look at it that way

Wow, I didn't know people put so much thought into it...when I got the nuvi and went online, it said I was eligible, so I got the 2k9 map. I think it was already 3 mos. old, I should have asked for 25% off! LOL

2009 maps

I downloaded mine and all I got was the lower 48 states. I have to use my older gps for Canada

Interesting Update

I updated my map to the 2009 version. However, the weird thing was that all the routes, which I had created in my 2008 map didn't function properly after the update.

They took me next to the freeway, not on it. It would not give me distances in the lower right side anymore. It just gave the directional arrow.

Could the maps have changed so much, or have the freeways moved? - Very strange.

Interesting Update

It could be that your routing preferences have changed to avoid highways. On the nuvi 660, in the set up area under navigation there is a list of avoidances. Make sure that highways are not checked there.

.

As stated in another thread, the routes you create in MapSource are tied to the map version on which they were created.

You need to recalculate the routes in the new map version.

And if you are a heavy route user, it's best to re-create the routes on the new map version.

Downloaded the 2009 up date

Downloaded the 2009 up date but I can't say I really see any difference.,and it took me about 2 hours

Got my update for the 760

Got my update for the 760 and havn't discovered any differences in Manitoba.

2009 maps

Ordered from Amazon.com for about $15 less than on the Garmin site. I drive an average of 150-200 miles per day all over the county and I must say that the new mapping has updated many of teh newer subdivisions that were not there in my previous version...

Nice... now i don't have to refer to my local map to find those shortcuts/dirt roads or new roads anymore.. smile

Maps

I have a very basic question. I have a two week old Nuvi 880 and did all the necessary updates. I have the 2009 map version.

Are there any newer (or more comprehensive/current) maps from other reliable sources that can be loaded or purchased for my 880?

If so where?

I am happy with what I have thus far but if some better software is out there I may get it.

Nuvi 3490

.

Nope. You've got the most current. The next version will likely be released in spring 2009.

2009 map

2009 does include some significant changes(at least for southern california) for the freeways. I think it's worth getting, although i think garmin should make this a free download.

2009 Map

I agree. It should be a free download, at least if you own more than one GPS unit made by the same company.

.

It's important to understand that Garmin must PAY a fee to Navteq for EACH map license. The data is not theirs to give away for free.

I am about to buy a GPS.

I am about to buy a GPS. One of the 600 series, maybe. Since it is a discontinued model does it mean that I will not get a 'free upgrade' on the map?

I just bought a factory-reconditioned Nuvi 350, also discontinued, and it included a free map update to 2009. If your buying from Garmin I believe it should be eligible, of course it might have the 2009 maps already installed.

Is it worth the money to get this update?

I have the 2008 version preloaded on my Garmin. Is it worth it get this new version?

Thanks.

It isn't really necessary...

I have gone for years without updating and not been bothered by it... My gps always seemed to get me where I was going. You may however be eligable for a free update. Check with Garmin.

From another perspective - it's always wise to spend the few dollars that it costs to update the device you've paid 4 to 5 hundred dollars for. I update annually, and have always found map improvements by doing so........

You must travel a LOT....and/or spend a lot of time in newly developed areas.

For a third perspective......what if this hypothetical "other" company charged $80 for their annual map update? Have you found enough improvements to be worth $80?

Yes.... My Honda Navi system costs $180 to upgrade the mapset. That one I'll have to think about. My Garmin 750 - you bet. At 70 or 80 bucks - I'll keep it updated for sure.

Don't worry, I think you'll be alright. Even discontinued or refurbished models get a free map update within 30 days of purchase when you register the unit. I know my refurbished nuvi200W did.

If the unit has already been registered by a previous owner and the registration information was somehow not deleted during the refurb process, then contact Garmin Customer Service and they should be able to delete the old registration to let you register the unit again and get the free one-time map update.

RE:Is it worth the money to get this update?

If you are in a developing area (if there are any left) then the upgrade may benefit you. I just upgraded to 2009 and now can see the newer neighborhoods around me. I'm glad I did it.
btw, I downloaded it over the internet and did not have to wait the 4-6 weeks.

Check the Garmin website.

If in question on upgrade, you can go to the garmin website and check the 09 maps and see if the changes are what you expect or want.

Depending on the cost of the

Depending on the cost of the unit and the cost of the map updates it may be a better deal to just upgrade every few years. The map update cost is about %25 of the cost of my last GPS, so I'd think twice before getting new maps.

.

I've had mine for a few years and travel for work extensively. That being said, I have never updated my maps yet. I know where I live smile so I don't care if there are new streets around me. In my travels, I have never been lost because some street was missing. It uses existing mapped streets to get me where I want to go. I'm sure that sooner or later I'll have to go somewhere that isn't on my "old" maps. But it hasn't happened yet. At that point, hopefully, common sense will prevail.....and by then I may need a new GPSr anyways.

What is new?

Just updated my Garmin Mobile XT with Garmin 2009 map. What's new on the map?

you have to decide

on what is new or isnt, depending on the area your in and what has changed on the map. No one knows what has changed in your area.

I know that dont answer your question BUT...

Map update 2009

I got my 660 last xmas, do I really have to update the map?

2009 Update

I loaded it on my Garmin Nuvi 660 and found some locations that were not correct where they were correct on the 2008 Maps.

Map update

Can't be that much of a change since I bought my Nuvi. I may have to sit this one out until the next one.

C580 map update

Bought a C580 and trying to update the map from 2008 to 2009. The 2009 online download is acting weird. Internet Explorer dies at the beginning of the download. Second try, using IE with the following:

"Should the Download Manager fail to start, or if you do not accept the security certificate, you can click here to download the file without using the download manager."

However, not sure this is working either. The download window has been stuck at 4% for the last hour (cable internet) but the CPU is very busy. No new file is present in the specified directory.

Just let it sit for a few more hours?

Tim

Download 2009 Map

Still having problems downloading free 2009 map on a cable internet connection using WinXP.

1) The Garmin Download manager immediately dies with IE and IE detects an error and wants to close.

2) Clicking on the download link to bypass the Garmin Download manager results in only ~4% of the file being downloaded and then the download hangs.

3) Using Firefox 3, Garmin download manager immediately dies and Firefox automatically closes.

Searched the Garmin support database but didn't find any help. Anyone have any suggestions to try? Otherwise, it looks like I need to call Garmin support.

$79 for 2009 maps thats

If the reboot does not help try the following.
1) make sure no other applications are running.
2) clear your internet cache (temp internet files)
3) reboot again.

I don't know of a way to repair IE however there is a beta version of IE8 available which may work for you.

2009 map

Bought a 760 couple of weeks ago. Went to my garmin and registered and the site said I was not eligible for the free upgrade to 2009 maps.

Called Garmin and told them my issue and he said that my activation date was the same as the manufacture date of the unit. He called tech support and they changed the date...then i was able to get the free upgrade.

I just got a C580 also, and downloaded the 2009 map with no problems. I think I remember seeing an option to just get the DVD instead of downloading it, would that be an option for you? I'm sure they want a few bucks for shipping and handling though...

After still having problems,

After still having problems, called Garmin last week and they shipped out a DVD. Now I have a new problem. The DVD installs only on the PC C: drive with no option to change drive letters. Unfortunately, my one HDD is partition such that 3.5GB of space isn't enough for the map install. I'll have to re-partition the disk.

2009 Map Updates

Just got a Garmin 260. I understand that map updates will be available 10/15. Anyone know if this is correct?

a virtual os maybe?

how about using microsoft virtual pc to create a host os just for map update? you can delete the host os after the upgrade is finished.

You can do it, buy you will have to edit your Registry.

Editing Registry to change Drive Letter

Unfortunately, the registry edit "trick" requires the program to be installed and THEN the edits are made. I'll just have to get more space on C: by using a partition program such as Acronis (Partition Magic v8 got an error for some unknown reason).

2009 MAP UPDATES

Hello everyone,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I would like to add some thoughts to this discussion, and I promise to be brief.

There has been some really good discussion about the cost and benefits of utilizing this update.

I would like to add this small and relevant point:

I have updated my Garmin, despite knowing that my area isn't completely covered, and that there were very few changes. As I was thinking about it, it came to me that it should be important for us to update our GPSs for that unfortunate time when you or your spouse will need a nearby garage or gas station when your travelling through someone else’s back yard.

You see, I already know the way around my town.

I want to know my way around YOUR town.

Purchasing these products will spurn Garmin to continue to update and improve this product.

Thank you for reading.
