Here we are into March and

Here we are into March and so far looks like zero from Garmin (yet) on the next (release date) version of the maps.

.

My guess (and this is only a guess) is that since Garmin just started the quarterly map updates in January, that the next release (which in could be version 2009.2 or 2010) will not be until the second quarter which would mean some time in April.

2009 updates

I just have a nuvie 255w, downloaded the 2009 for north America free. Just can't remember wher I got the info. Could we not post and share them on Limewire??

Please do not discuss the illegal sharing of data here. Thanks.

Yes, it is legal to download and use safety POIs in the United States. Some European countries restrict their usage.

The maps are specific to the

The maps are specific to the Garmin unit it is downloaded on. Just for fun I tried putting 2009 update on my unit that was downloaded for another and it remained locked despite being able to view the maps in MapSource. Oh, and it is illegal as well.

So is there currently a 2009.1 ?

So what you're saying is that there's currently a 2009.1 version? When was it released if it does exist? and would I be able to get it if I registered my gps in Nov '08?

.

Yes, there's currently a version 2009.1 and you can purchase it for your unit by logging in to your my.garmin.com page.

It was released in January 2009, though, so I would doubt that the maps would be much different from the 2009 maps that you already have if you got your GPS unit in November 2008, so you might want to wait a little while unless you think your maps need to be updated and you are willing to pay for it.

puerto Rico

Hey does anyone knew if teh Garmin c580 works in Puerto Rico? curious if teh maps are included

.

Yes and yes.

The "G" in GPS stands for Global. Your GPS unit will work anywhere on the globe.

And the preloaded City Navigator maps include coverage for Puerto Rico.

Glad I held off on getting

Glad I held off on getting the lifetime maps. I will wait to subscribe once I see how long it takes for them to do the updates.

Next update...

Hm... Still no news from Garmin on the next update?

Map Source & Update

I recently down loaded & installed 2009.11 to my Garmin and to the Map Source software on my PC. I placed the down loded file in the same directory as Map Source and it added the updated map to it while updating the map on the Garmin.

I would like to install Map Source on my Laptop with the new map(Unlocked), but not sure about the best way to do it.

I was thinking about putting the down loaded 2009.11.exe file in the same directory as Map Source and then run it without connecting the Garmin to the laptop. Goal to make it available to Map Source on the laptop without causing problems or overiding what I already have on my device. Or do I have to Redo the entire process with the laptop, including having the device connected in order to get a unlocked map into Map Source.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has done this.

RE: Map Source & Update

It doesn't matter what directory the map install file is located in when you run it. Just execute the file and connect the GPS when it requests it. Once it checks the unit and starts the install process you can disconnect the GPS and it will install the maps into the computer and when it gets to the point of installing to the GPS it will give you a notice that the unit cannot be found and at that point just hit cancel and the new maps will be installed and show up in MapSource. I installed it in my desktop and both laptops and the GPS the first time I did the install using this method.

Thanks

When I did the original install I had the GPS conected the entire time and didn't notice if it updated the PC or the device 1st so I wasn't sure what procedure it would follow, particularly since the device now has the latest version on it. I will try your sugestion

The Garmin nav is a piece of junk. I bought a Mio with a 2007 map edition which has shows all my local red lobsters. My 2008 Garmin 265 does not even show my local red lobster.

What an awful nav system( it does not even show the trip distance)

easy killer ;-)

Garmin is NOT responsible for the POI's OR the road listings, Navteq is.

I'm sorry you were not able to use your 265 to it's potential. It does in fact show the trip distance and in more than one place. Shouldn't fault a unit because you are unable to utilize all of its features.

Garmin vs other GPS units

All GPSr have their pluses and minuses. I have Nuvi 255W and fairly happy with it. Althogh I wish
Garmin was better at updating maps. They should have something like MapShare (tomtom).
Navtaq is really slow in updating maps. I have submitted couple map errors while back and it's still not on the new map. Oh and this street has been in existence for last 10 years.
For the price you have to pay for GARMIN, Maps should be up to date.

Is it just me, or is calling

Is it just me, or is calling a map "2010" released 9 months before 2010 starts is pretty silly! Garmin is worse than the car manufacturers with labels like that!

update 2009

i got mine update from amazon.com. was fast and cheaper $53

my 760 showed me every Red Lobster within a 100 miles

I just did a search for Red Lobster on my 760 and it showed me all 7 that according to Red Lobster's website are within a 100 miles of my location.

It appears that you just didn't understand how to use the 265 to search the built in POI's for Red Lobster.

The trip distance is shown in at least two locations. See page 12 item 2 (select show map and it shows total trip distance) and 5 (upper right box shows distance still to go) in the operating instructions in the link that follows.

Map Updates for Lane View

I just bought a nuvi 765t, will lane view/directions be apart of updates?

Worth the investment

I looked at the Garmin site to see if the update offered significant value to me. The built in google style map there is nice, but doesn't tell me what is new in this release. I am in Ft Lauderdale. While the map often can't find certain stores, the roads are at least all there. My Nuvi 200 came with the Nov 08 update. How can I tell if it is going to be an improvement for me?

With my luck it will happen

With my luck it will happen two days after my 60 day free updates period! lol

I spoke to Garmin today trying to get 2009 update for work unit and was told the new update should be out "in a few weeks" and I should wait until then. She told me to call back in about 2 weeks....

I emailed Garmin a week ago

I emailed Garmin a week ago and they told me the current version was 2009.10...I guess by the sounds of things the 2010 may be out in a few weeks?

I was one of the unlucky ones that bought a Nuvi200W that had old maps in it, I was not allowed to update 2009 for free like a lot of folks (even though I technically fell into the period for the updates).

I travel quite a bit and the maps are good in some places, and completely useless in others. Don't go to Miami with NT2008, you will be run around in circles because it doesn't have any of the new "old" roads in it. I have found it is pretty much useless, and I did better navigating by a current edition map...even my BlackBerry with Google maps is more reliable (a lot of the NT2008 POIs are outdated, inaccurate, or have invalid information).

New Map (4/8/09)

I just got off the phone with Garmin (2:30 PM CST) and was told that a new map will be released tomorrow.

!

I had a free update available and it's working for me, I'm not sure why it's not working for you, hmmm

I left it to download, it's about 1.92gigs

Why doesn't Garmin Webupdater tell me about this?

I launched Garmin webupdater this morning and see updates to voices and help files available for my unit but it doesn't let me know about map updates, although I am now two updates behind.

Does one always need to login in to the MyGarmin to find out.

Seems like the Garmin WebUpdater would be a logical application to tell me about it.

.

WebUpdater does not update the maps nor does it check for map updates.

You must check the Garmin website regarding maps.
