POI projects

when I choose my .csv from my HD, the server thinks it ends it .txt.

It doesn't end in txt; you can clearly see the .csv extension in the upload input.

In my old Garmin III collection I could make POIs and waypoints show up on the map (eg redlight cams, etc)... I understand you can add proximity alarms etc, still figuring that out for my c550 - but I just want to show the contents of a CSV file on my maps, not just have them listed in my POI list - any suggestions for the c550 to do this?

Along these lines, I used to also be able to block certain points on a route so that the GPS would stop trying to route through the area... I seem to be marginally smarter than the Garmin on occasion... and would like to tell it to use either a given route (alas c550s do not seem to have this option, not a great Garmin move, along with no lat/long access). But at least I'd hope a POI (or waypoint??) could be made to block the Garmin from routing a given path?

Well, I sure hope I did this right New Hope is a really beautiful little town. I will be testing the file as I can and will fine tune and update it as time allows

Is anyone interesting in waypoints for hiking trails? I have several - I use my GPS while hiking. It creates a track, I convert it to a series of waypoints. I have uploaded many to a Trail Registry site.

Is there interest in posting these here also?

Just dpwnloaded the Trails POIs onto my Garmin i5, and notice that the maps indicate just a point (the trailhead?) and not the trail itself. Am I doing something wrong, or is that what I should expect with this unit?

Hi all, what a great place this is. I've been veeery slowly mapping Lake Norman, NC, for the past 5 years, trying to get all the channel markers, shoals, islands, restaurants, gas docks, harbors, marinas, etc., identified to share with the local community. I've taken what I have so far and uploaded it into GoogleEarth, if you are interested you can download a copy of my "Tour Lake Norman" file at:

RFB and GlennCahn have sent me some nice pictures to add to their POI files. I've added them to the Tulsa and Boston POI files.

I've created some POI's of late of places I've lived and been to (DC, Boston, Vancouver), and they're being downloaded, so I know that there's an interest in them.

In looking over the membership list for this site, we cover N. America (and beyond) pretty well. I'd like to think that those who are still living in DC, Boston, Vancouver, etc. could expand on the listings. And that people in other major cities (Philly, San Diego, L.A., etc.) could add something as well. We could have a really great site which could blanket the country for wherever our travels take us, and have inside knowledge of the places to go, things to do, where to eat. That's my 2 cents.

My tulsa area is not very big in fact we have no redlight cameras that i know of. so my attractions is a work in progress for all of the northeast oklahoma area. id like to up date my attractions when i find something new and different. these should be put on one poi file and i dont want to clutter the board with updates. is there a way to update and delete the old file?

It looks like we had a pretty successful first week with our new upload area installed. Thanks to all that contributed, we appreciate all your hard work.

The file upload tool is ready to use. This first release is pretty basic and still has a few rough edges, but more improvements are on the way.

To upload a file:

* you must be logged in
* select "Create Content" / "POI File"
* enter a title and file name
* category and description are optional
* press submit

Your file will be listed on the front page. If you have a picture for your user account, it will show next to the files you upload.

GlennCahn put together a nice list of 50+ attractions in the Washington DC area. We'll convert it to a CSV file and have it posted for this weekend (hopefully with the new upload module).
