Garmin Vehicle Manager

Here is a little application that will let you view/transfer the Garmin Vehicle Files (SRF) to and from your Garmin.
- Search for you Garmin manually, or click on the
button with a 'G' in it to have the program search
for the stock folder ("/Garmin/Vehicle") on all
available drives starting with "D:"

- Each vehicle is represented on a card that includes
the 0-degree 3d view of the vehicle, and some other
data.

- Right-click a vehicle card and select 'Preview
Vehicle' to see what it will look like on the
Garmin 760.

- Drag and Drop vehicles from one location to the
other

- Right-Click and select 'Delete Vehicle' to delete
the vehicle file.

Right now the only Garmin used in the preview is the 760, cause that's all I had a picture of and the only one that is useful to me smile If you want me to add your Garmin as a preview, send me:
1) a good pic of your Garmin in 3D map mode
2) the SRF file for the vehicle seen in the above pic
3) The stock folder for that model of Garmin where
the SRF files are kept.

Cool!

Mike, that's excellent! From your screen cap, that looks like what I was looking for.

Once I've installed it, you'll sure hear from me with full comments.

One suggestion, can you compute a MD5 or something for each file to find duplicates and/or renamed files?

Simon

PS. We can still find the files, but there's a problem with your links.

link problem for me too...great idea!

thanks for the effort - looking forward to trying it this weekend....

NICE WORK

What a great little program. Haven't tried it yet but it is exactly what I was wanting the other day.

Thanks for the program and link. It's another tool for my little toy.

Some days you're the bug, Some days you're the windshield!!

Problem

When I hit the G in the square to get the vehicles from my 765T I get a "Run-time error '5'" then the program shuts down.

I also get the same message when finding the 765T manually.

Hmmm...

This is running fine on both my XP SP2 machines. Are you on Vista? Do you have anything else connected that is using a drive letter other than the hard drives? I have been able to test it with my printer, scanner, and USB key in and it deals with those.

As for the inclusion of a checksum test to look for dupes, that's a great idea! I don't have the time to do it right now, but some time in the future I think it would be great....

Thanx for the feedback, it'll help get the wrinkles ironed out smile

I get the same error on Vista 64 Home Premium. Also, it installed and activated Install Shield Program Update Manager which took some research to figure out how to get rid of.

Thanks for your efforts on this program raptrflite. It looks like it will be a nice tool once you get the glitches ironed out.

Sorry bout the InstallShield

Sorry bout the InstallShield thing. sad I tried using Visal Basic's installer, but people were having problems with it, so I switched to IS, which does a much better job with installs from my experience. So now it's installing an update manager?! GRRRR... WHy can't these companies just make their products do what we ask without adding items to the list???!!!! >:(

I'm gonna try installing it on a third computer and see if I can recreate the error you all are seeing

BTW: anyone seeing it work fine? If so please let me know what OS you are on...
Thanx,
Mike

ok.. tried it on my wife's

ok.. tried it on my wife's XP SP2 LT and it runs fine.

When you click on the button to manually find the GPS directory, does it even bring up the Folder browser? If you do the same thing on the button on the left side, does it crash there too? I wonder if a component is not being installed properly.

This is the hardest part of releasing software... Making it work on 95% of all machines
Sorry for the trouble... sad

Mike

Try again.

I've been in IT for 34 years Mike so I know what you mean. I tried it again and was more careful this time about noticing the symptoms. If I drill down to the I:\Garmin\Vehicle folder I get a "Run-time error '5' Invalid procedure call or argument.". If I click on the G button, it briefly displays a search box, doesn't get an error, but doesn't display anything. Again I have Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

And it did install the InstallShield Program Updates manager program again.

Thanks for the help with

Thanks for the help with this. smile

So just running the program is causing Installshield to be activated? I'm not gonna be very happy if that's the case. It should install and
then never be heard from again (until un-install wink )

So it may be failing at the point where the software has established the desired path name, and then tries to open the SRFs there. Does it show this same behavior when you select a directory on the 'Files' side, or do you see the cards come up? This was a custom user control I designed and that may also be the issue. Check in your windows system32 directory and see if ItemCard.ocx is in there.

I don't think I've had the drive letter down to I: before, but I can't see how that would be an issue either.

Wow, 34 years of MicroSloth-induced brain trauma! I'm only up to 15 as an app writer, and I sometimes wonder why I do it as a hobby, too. Then when a program comes together like this one did, and does something cool... I remember smile

Again, thanx for the help debugging the issue..

Only fails on Garmin

I played around with it some more. I copied the .srf files out to my D: drive and also to the J: SD card in the Garmin. Your program works with either of those locations in either the left or right pane if I drill down to the folders. So it only fails when accessing the internal drive of the Garmin (drive I: in my case). My Garmin is a 755T. If I push on the little G box, the blue dialog box flashes up for just a split second ... it looks like it is saying something about a 760.

As far as leaving the InstallShield program on the system, it leaves an item in the programs list called "Program Updates" and points to an executable named ISUSPM.exe. It also has it start automatically at bootup. I found an uninstaller for it at http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q112918/SoftwareMa....

XP SP3 - similar failure

The install went without any complaints. I launched the app, pointed the Local Files to a folder on my HDD that contained a srf file (not a zipped copy) and that part worked ok... kinda cool rotating the vehicle, never saw the front end before! smile

Then I pointed the Garmin side to the Vehicle folder on my nüvi (750 v4.80) and when I clicked on OK, I got: "Run-time error "5": Invalid procedure call or argument." Clicking OK on the error message closes (crashes) the app.

The Garmin shows up as (M:) on my system as there are a couple of HDDs, DVDs, and a built-in card reader that reserves a bunch of letters for various cards (none were pugged in) and the nüvi was naked also (no SD card plugged into it).

If I launch the app, and only click on the "G", a note pops up briefly that says: "Checking M: for 760... Checking D: for 760..."

What's D: got to do with this?

Hope this helps.

FYI

I am running XP SP3. Only problem is like TXRVer has.

The way the program 'finds'

The way the program 'finds' the GPS is that it starts with drive letter 'd:' and searches all the way down through available drives until it finds one with the folder garmin\vehicle. most people should have there main hard drive as 'c:' and might not have a 'D:' hard drive, so I started the search there. If you have a hard drive labeled 'd:' and make a folder on it called d:\Garmin\vahicle the program will pick that as your Garmin. I haven't had time to look into actually having it locate the USB device, so this was a quick way of finding my Garmin. I wonder if it's something about the way I'm searching the dirves that the 755/765 don't like? I'll see if there's somewhere in the code where an error in that part isn't being handled

All this feedback is really helping.. thanx!

Windows 7 / Vista Issues

Thanks for this useful program!

Here are some errors from Windows 7 (32-bit) and Vista Home Premium SP1 (32-bit) :

  1. I get an ItemCard.ocx "component not registered correctly" error message on the first launch after installing it.

  2. If I click on the "G" box, it finds the nuvi 680, but does not display any vehicle files. If I then click on Refresh I get a "Run-time error '5'" as others have reported. The error '5' problem also occurs if I manually navigate to the nuvi's vehicle folder

  3. When trying to load Garmin's Black Pearl vehicle (blackPearl.srf), the program crashes in ntdll.dll. FYI, the Garmin Felt bicycle loads OK (it's 100x100).

EDIT: Also tested on Vista. Updated subject/comment to reflect this.

I tried it on my wife's XP

I tried it on my wife's XP SP2 machine and noticed something. It will appear to hang if the computer is still trying to establish the Garmin as a known USB device, but once the Garmin is recognized, it works fine. One thing to try is to wait until you know the Garmin is recognized by the computer, I was just watching in windows explorer until it gave it a drive letter. Update: I also noticed it is slow after I've accessed the Garmin's directory from explorer.. Maybe a USB thing?

I also noticed that the routine gave no indication of a failed search, it just removed the mesage box and went on... I added a message box for a failed search.

I added some more info to let the user know what the app is up to during the search, but couldn't see anything else wrong sad

I got the Black Pearl and the Upside-Down black Pearl from the Garmin Garage and had no problems sad
I noticied mine was rading it at 80x80 though. Putter, Scooter, and Airborne from Garmin all come in at 90x90, so it's weird that Pearl came in only at 80x80. Perhaps the Garage gives you a version compatible with your own unit, and mine is the 760, pretty old... In any case, it should have handled 100x100 OK ( that's the limit, though). Is that file animated? Maybe the animation is reading in right... DOH! sad

As for the Vista/7 problems, I was afraid there might be issues like that. I was hoping InstallShield would take care of that sad. I am looking into it to see how people are working around it.

The new EXE is at the site. Just unzip it and replace the EXE in the directory you installed the VM into...

http://sites.google.com/site/raptorbase/Home/VehicleManager_...

Mike

Getting better

This time it did not abort but it only found one vehicle on the 765T. There are 17 loaded on the unit.

tried it...

but just with my computer running XP w/SP3. I drill down to the appropriate folders and see the .srf file images and can preview and rotate them. Haven't tried with the Garmin yet, but so far, so good. Thanks!

We may be on to something

We may be on to something here.. Panache, you could tell me which one SRF it read and one or two of the ones it didn't. If it fails to read an SRF, it just ignores it.

schmidwr- thanx for the feedback smile Good to hear it's actually working ok for someone...

Mike

Info

It starts to read car_blue.SRF There is just a , on the line two lines below the name. A status box pops up with "Loading 1 of 17" and it just stops. Others present on the unit but not read are beachball.SRF, Billy.SRF, Boots.SRF, Cannon,SRF, etc.

Hope this helps.

Replace the .EXE if you already have the program installed. If not, run the install, THEN replace the EXE with the one containde in this file.

ALSO: add the two BMP files to the \Images directory

Ok. this one should cover the only shows a comma problem. I downloaded the Garage package (104 SRFs)
and it ran through all of them w/ no problems.

Also some new things:

1) Animated SRFs are marked as such
2) preview animation of Animated SRF animation
3) Other little fixes.

Works very well on my XP SP2 machine with my 760

New find, the 4 files I listed with “no modified date” on the Garmin drive, must have been originals when new. When I moved them back, now have a modified date, Vehicle manger reads them fine.

Looks like Vehicle Manger likes to sort by Date of file. Anyway to sort by Name so you can have side by side comparison?

Thanks again

--
Nuvi 760

I went ahead and commented

I went ahead and commented out the VB routine which looks for the file time and date. Would you mind trying it now to see if that solves the problem?

If so, I'll find a better method of finding the file time and date rather than a VB call which tend to be odd... smile

Don't tell my wife I'm a machine, or she'll wonder why I'm not such a machine when it comes to yard work smile)))) LOL!

I didn't even add any code to sort by date, so I think the VB file search routine must do that inherently. It wouldn't be much problem getting sorting going, just take a little time. After we get these problems sorted out I'll get going on the sorting.

Microsoft has an army of programmers, an army of product testers, and all the operating systems running on virtualmachines they need to test there software in MANY scenarios. I have me...me...and my XP SP2 machine so bare with me, I'll get ya somwthing that works for as many as I can smile

Better.

It grabs the wrong vehicle,

It grabs the wrong vehicle, huh? Weird! Wait! I may know the problem...

Input

It took a little bit to find my Garmin drive, but loaded with no problems. I have the same problem with drag and drop as Panache, delete from computer works too. Also it shows no date or time for SRF files now.

What it's doing when it

What it's doing when it takes that long is copying the SRFs to the hard drive because it seems to take FAR longer to try and open the SRFs straight from the unit.

I got the copy bug corrected and uploaded to the site:

hope this works for everyone...

Do a Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up Windows Task Manager. Check to see if VehicleManger.exe is still running as a process? If so delete it and extract the file again. Before I did this update the program was closed, but still running as a process and would not let me copy over the file.

@raptrflite:

Your new version fixes the Black Pearl problem. I have a different version (2007-09-21 3.66MB) that I won in the online contest in '07. It's not animated, and your program displays its attributes as 100x100, 160x160.

Windows 7 shows the SAME 2 errors as Vista Home premium - the ItemCard.ocx installation problem and the Run-time error '5' clicking the G button. So it's no better or worse than Vista smile

Good to hear that things are

Good to hear that things are starting to run better (for most anyway). I've got the alphabetic sorting almost complete I just need a little more time.

I'm also trying to track down the Vista issue.

BTW: The biggest SRF size this was to handle was 100x100 and I'm noticing (and hearing here) of sizes bigger than that sad Wingspan.srf is an example of one that's bigger and you will see the wingtips clipped into the next icon.I may have to just have it pull the center 100x100 section out for now. making it work with larger pics won't be altogether easy: either I have to redesign the ItemCard user control, or I will have to shrink the larger pics to fit, which is more desirable for me, but might not look as good on the screen. Might not be too bad, though so I'll probably try that...

Windows 7 / Vista Issues Resolved

Now that my wife returned with the GPS, I was able to try it with V052509b.

Good job! Both problems (the ItemCard.ocx installation problem and the Run-time error '5' clicking the G button) are resolved on both Vista and Windows 7.

I tested the .ocx problem by uninstalling GVM, manually un-registering ItemCard.ocx, then re-installing GVM, unchecking "launch program", and copying/launching V052509b. FYI, Install Shield does the DllRegisterServer for ItemCard.ocx but does not unregister it at uninstall. Also, the error message only happens on the first run of the old Vehicle Manager.

And V052509b is only 232K vs 1648K for the old version!

Thanx for the notes about Vista/7 Waasup! I am having a
tough time getting to the bottom of that one. I
read a lot about the permissions of Vista, and blah,
blah, blah..

But......

I went ahead and changed the ItemCard.OCX to be able to
handle the larger images. It will now handle up to
200x200 size images. Anything under 100x100 will be
actual size, but it will shrink larger vehicles to fit
the view area. I think it looks fine without much loss
of detail, and the preview is unaffected. I am still
testing this new version and it might have multi-selection

Yes, registering the .ocx file needs elevated permissions, but Install Shield handles that OK. I'm guessing that the error message generated by the original version of GVM might refer to a missing .oca file? Almost like a charm ...I'm ashamed a bit to be the only one reporting this bug...

Did you know that it can't handle more than 200 SRFs in the same folder? (I know, I know, I'm a pack rat)

Seriously, when pointing it to a folder containing 201 srf files, it reports "Nothing found, <--- No vehicles found". Delete one to have an even 200, works great.

And now, you understand why I was suggesting checksum do find dupes (I actually collected 361 srf files so far)

I'm almost finished with the multi-selection and I should have the new version out tomorrow or Thursday. The new one will handle vehicles up to 200x200 for the 3D view.

I'm thinking about the best way to implement the dup search and I might add it later, but I REALLY need to take a couple days off from this.. I'm seeing Garmin Vehicles flip by in my sleep!!! smile

I set the limit of 200 vehicles for a reason, but I'm looking back and questioning that reason. 10 years ago, memory was at a premium, but people have it to spare now, so it should be ok with more vehicles. I'll look into it.

Hope it's helpful to everyone!

Whew!... It's done!

I uploaded the most recent version of Vehicle Manager to the website....

Full Install:
http://sites.google.com/site/raptorbase/Home/GarminVehicleMa...

Upgrade Files:
http://sites.google.com/site/raptorbase/Home/VehicleManager_...

If you already have a version of the GVM, just download the upgrade files and:
1) Copy 'VehicleManager.exe' to the directory you installed GVM to (ex. c:\Program Files\GVM)
2) Copy the two .BMP files to the 'Images' directory that is in the directory you just put the .EXE file into (If you don't want to do this, no big deal, when you animate an SRF, it will just say 'Rotate' instead of 'Animate'
3) Copy 'ItemCard.ocx' to your windows system32 directory. This is important...

Notes:
1) Select All and Select None added to the rt-clck menu
2) Number of SRFs boosted to 500 per side. Let me know if there are memory issues
3) Multi-select active.
4) The Main Window fades out a little to make the Preview window stand out more
5) Other little fixes

let me know any problems you have smile
