West Virginia Mountains

Just returned from a delightful midweek trip in the West Virginia mountains. To our surprise, we found the roads in excellent condition and with little traffic. Most of the driving was on state roads. A few of the highways were WV 39, WV 150, WV 28, Public Road 112, and WV 90 (old road). Key sites included Highland Scenic Highway, Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks, and Blackwater Falls.

Ivy Knob (Lookout Tower)

Ivy Knob eleveation is 3,620 feet. WV Gazetteer for Guyandotte Mt. confirms it & the current survey control from USGS. It is entirely located in Raleigh County, WV. Confirmed by the 911 Raleigh County mapping department. It is the site where the very first fire tower to go up in the state of WV in 1916.

Lax airport offsite cell phone parking lot

Has anyone had any experience while trying to find or use the Lax airport cell phone parking lot?

Almost seems as if someone doesn't want motorists who're waiting to pick up arrivals, to know where it is located and what the terms of use are.

Over in Long Beach, also in CA, the cell phone waiting lot is really easy to locate and simple to use.

Illinois Toll Roads

When my family and I were traveling recently we feared we may have gone through a toll area without paying in Illinois. So, I made a telephone call a day or two later. I waited at least 10 minutes until talking to a real, live person. I explained my predicament, specifically that we weren't sure, but we may have passed an area without paying a toll.

Road Trip From Saint Paul MN Area To Asheville NC And Back

I am just wondering what people here do to make their road trips more enjoyable. My family, there are four of us, and I recently drove from the Saint Paul MN area to the Asheville NC area to drop my son off at college. I used to really enjoy road trips, BUT this is one of the longer ones I have done in several years.

Miami Nightmares

If you use East Coast Park and Fly in Miami, don't trust their web site with regard to hours of operation. They close at 10:00 PM on Friday nights, not 11:00 PM as advertised and as confirmed verbally when we dropped off our car.

Big surprise when we returned to Miami after 9 days touring in Cuba.

Express I95 in Virginia

I posted this in The Chit Chat forum by mistake.

Just back in Brooklyn from a great week at North Myrtle Beach.

Anybody else confused with the new Virginia EZPass I95 Express reversible lanes with dynamic pricing? Saved us a lot of traffic headaches, coming and going. But when the express lanes end, be careful not to continue driving in the HOV lanes with less than 3 occupants.

I-77 Interests?

I've traveled from MI to FL every year along I-75 as I live right off it and it's a straight shot. That being said, it's also become boring for me.
This year I'm taking the I-77 route for a change of pace. Does anyone have some great POIs that I can use n this trip, or, offer any great stops along the way?
I'll be leaving here MI in a few weeks....
Thanks

Hows been your experience with tire snow chains and snow cables in the mammoth lakes area

Has anyone had a recent experience with having to use tire cables or chains in the sierras? Heard they had a foot and a half snow in Mammoth Lakes this last week. Would M+S tires suffice or would it likely require cables/chains?

Rest Area POI

the rest area poi has numerous flaws. Just traveled through San Antonio,TX and GPS stated rest area when there was none

How To: Create My Own Map/TripTik On My GPS

Hi, I have a Garmin Nuvi 200W and may be traveling across the country. I would like to avoid traveling threw big cities and be able to find rest areas when I need to as well. Is there a way to create your own map route kinda like a aaa triptik so to speak and add it to my GPS.

Driving from Seattle to Victoria, BC, Canada

I will be taking a week vacation at the end of October. I'll fly into SEA (Seattle international airport), rent a car and drive to Victoria BC (Canada). I'd like to get some help from those who have taken this trip before.

Google map shows me 3 ferry routes:
from Port Angeles, WA
from Anacortes, WA
and from Tsawwassen, BC

Driving from NYC to Dallas the end of August. Any Advice? Best Route?

I've got a big move to make and the last week of August I'm driving my car from NYC to Dallas, Texas & I'm looking for the best route. I'd be leaving at dawn's early light Aug 30 or 31.

At present I plan on making just one overnight stop after 12 or 13 hours in Tennessee, but that could change based on conditions.

More bum steers - in Washington DC

I spent 2 days in DC this week for a family event. I crossed town 3 times during the day. I use a TomTom 1435 and a laptop with Streets & Trips 2013. The TomTom just had its map updated for the trip.

Bum steer by TomTom - almost lost in the woods

Last week I was exploring the area in NW lower Michigan near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I was cutting across Benzie County heading towards the shoreline & told my Tom Tom to simply direct me. The device told me to turn west from CR 669 to Fowler Rd., which was a switch from a paved road to a good gravel one.

Almost threw Garmin out the window

Last weekend I drove from eastern Maryland to western Kentucky. Have made the trip many times, but use my GPS for times and distances, as well as traffic reroutes. This last trip started out OK for the first 50 miles, until I took I97 toward Baltimore. The GPS wanted me to stay on US50.

Hawaii beaches

I'm off to Maui in July. Second trip. My Magellan GPS came in very useful on my last visit in 2011. I didn't have a list of beaches on my GPS, so finding the recommended beach locations from my guide book was difficult.

What are your favourite beaches in Maui (or any Hawaiian island)? I'll begin by saying Makena and Black Rock were two that I enjoyed very much.
