appliances in 2023

It was bound to happen.

On Saturday, our 1984 Whirlpool gas dryer broke. No heat.

About a year ago, I replaced the belt, which was likely the 2nd time, as I could see it had been opened up before.

But I've used it since Oct 2002, so prior to that.

From the paperwork, it's a 1984 model.

Powering A 12VDC Device Via USB Port (USB-C Adapter Vs USB-A Adapter)

I am looking for a device that will provide 12 VDC from a USB port.

The have found adapters on Amazon for both USB-A to 12 volt power outlet and USB-C to 12 volt power outlet. Which is the better choice?

Right now I am leaning towards the USB-C to 12 volt power outlet because it looks like it will offer more power than the USB-A devices.

What other factors should I consider?

Electric Car registration fee Pennsylvania

Apparently not enough electric vehicle owners are voluntarily sending in the alternative fuel tax so Senator Rothman wants to get rid of the tax and tack a fee of $380 per noncommercial electric vehicle and $450 per commercial electric vehicle onto the registration.

Portable Power Bank That Provides 12 Volts DC

I am looking for a portable power bank that provides 12 volts DC. Does anybody here have one that works really well that they would recommend? I did have an older, sealed lead acid (SLA) battery with a 12 volt power outlet, but I am inclined to get a non-SLA at this point.

This Week in Ottawa

Good day all!

We have a little over 15 centimeters of snow on the ground here in Ottawa. It's -10 degrees Celsius this morning, but it's going back above freezing this weekend (+5 degrees Celsius).

What do you do when you encounter exceptional customer service?

Do you call it out?

Yesterday, I saw an associate at Costco, so I shouted out, "Hey Derrick! I remember you from 2020!"

He turned around.

I stated, "You're the best employee Costco has!"

new Apple related security updates

Apple dropped the updates, iOS 17.1.2, iPadOS 17.1.2, and macOS Sonoma 14.1.2 today. Interestingly, each patches the same two issues, so the Mac update is essentially the same as the iOS and iPadOS updates.

The update patches some security concerns with the underlying platform that powers Safari.

Auto Insurance Discount Programs

Many auto insurance companies, including mine, offer premium discounts if you use an app or an installed device on your vehicle. Discounts can be as much as 30% but vary based on how you drive.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hopefully most can sit back and and enjoy Thanksgiving today. For those that have to work or are on the road may you have a safe journey and be able to return home afterwards. For those that sacrificed, thank you.

Great experience at Jiffy Lube

I have been changing oil since I was about 11.

Other than when buying a new car (3X in my life), I would not let anyone else change my oil. With my wife's purchased new in 2011, after getting ripped off by a dealer, I said that's it, never again.

Anyway, living in SE PA, working in NJ, nobody here will consistently accept used motor oil.
