Tom Tom VS. Garmin

I had bought a Tom Tom Go910 about 1.5 yrs ago. I traded it in for a Garmin 260w. Was that a mistake?

Chatty Charley thread for the week of March 31st 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Contributors of the week 2008-03-24

This week we are recognizing Motorcycle Mama, Ralphy1 and Robphelan.

MM, I always get choked up when I am recognizing you. You do so much for everyone here. There are no words to express my appreciation for all the help and support that you provide to this community. You are truly one in a million!!!!

Motorcycle compatibility

I use my Garmin in my car all the time, but noticed in the manual it says it's not motorcycle friendly even though the software has a motorcycle option. I'm guessing it's not motorcycle friendly becasue of the size/mounting/weatherability. Can anyone who uses one with a motorcycle recommend a good one or give me tips you've learned?

Thanks!

Any Such Animal?

I'm looking for a GPS unit with both "Reality View" and Dead Reckoning. Does any such animal exist? If so, who makes it? Anyone have any experience with the features?

Information Week

Information Week has a 'GPS Buyer's Guide To Car Navigation Systems" article at:

that might make for some interesting reading.

gps/radar detector

Is there a GPS unit that integrates a radar detector? My friend said he has one that even gives the officers name who is registered to the radar unit.

gulf south rest area versus restareascombined

I am not sure it is important. However, I compared some points in the gulf south rest areas.csv file with the identical point in the RestAreasCombined.csv.txt files. Unfortunately, they do not match.

For example,

-86.509479,30.726753,"REST AREA EB I-10 MM58","RR, PT, VM, Pet, HF, 24hr Security"

Estimated time of arrival (ETA)

Folks: The last several trips I have made with Jill (my GPS) she has been extremely accurate in her ETA. Like within minutes. Is this normal or was I just lucky? Hate to start depending on her predictions and have her let me down.

Custom pois (Garmin needs a POI site)

With all the custom pois on this site wouldn't it be nice if they were all included in the new Garmin release in April.I know it would not be practical since all of the coordinates could not be vertified but just thinking out loud.Maybe Garmin needs a poi site we could upload to.

Dash express review

http://www.gpsmagazine.com has a review on the Dash Express.

American Legion

Still seeking A.L. Post poi's. Thanks all for the states submitted. I have searched the national web sites, but find few sources. Please keep em coming if available.

Proximity Alerts

Does any of the POI files contain proximity alerts besides the red light camera locations? Rest stops along the highways would be nice to know ahead of time when traveling 70+ MPH in traffic along the nations highways. An alert might give one time to actually use the rest stop. Advance alerts of other locations would also be very helpful.

screen protection

anyone use a screen protection agains scratches - i found this one
