Personal Navigation Devices (PND's) versus Cell Phone GPS apps

I'm guessing that PND's will always be around for car navigation.

The cons of cell phones for navigation include the smaller size of the screen, less accurate routing, unreliable cell tower service, tying up the phone while the app is running, and the cost for the app.

And as far as I know, you can't save your own POI's in the phone as you pass a location. Maybe I'm wrong about this.

Suggestion for POI Contributors regarding changes

When you update your POI files please remember to update the POI's LOGBOOK so the change history can be noted. OR alternatively, please note the change within the text of the POI file node.

This makes it easy for everyone to decide if the new POI is worthy of a download. If just one minor change was made I often don't download the file.

GPS is new tool to help police crack cases, but critics worry about privacy

I have posted this here just an case anybody here is interested in the non-navigation aspects of GPS. Merry Christmas!

But critics worry about privacy — when, where and how it’s used by law enforcement officers.

No COW this week. Instead: Holiday Survival

Since Contributor of the Year voting is underway, I will not be posting a COW for this week.

This week I’d like to hear about how you either celebrate or endure the holiday season.

Are there family traditions that you enjoy or do you hide out with your light box and count the days till January 2nd?

Target Store Breach

This was on last night news. I almost purchased an iPad Mini at Target store on black Friday. Glad I didn't.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Target Corp said hackers have stolen data from up to 40 million credit and debit cards of shoppers who visited its stores during the first three weeks of the holiday season in the second-largest such breach reported by a U.S. retailer.

Home monitoring using the internet.

Has anyone here had experience using any products from La Crosse Alerts? The research I have done looks promising. I worry about the "home front" while traveling during the winter.

No COW this week. Instead: A look back at 2013

Since Contributor of the Year voting is underway, I’ve decided not to post a COW for this week.

Instead I thought it might be nice to hear a little about how 2013 went for everyone.

Is there a New Year’s resolution you stuck with?

For the goal setters, is there a special met goal that you’re particularly proud of?

Did you check an item off of your bucket list?

The Big Easy

Got back Saturday from a trip to New Orleans, and though I'm a Luddite dinosaur, I'm starting to see the benefit of a smart phone with GPS.

On our way to Pascal's Manale for BBQ shrimp, there was a car overturned on the streetcar tracks. The driver said Napolean Avenue was "a few blocks up there", but we had no idea the distance. A smart phone/GPS would have told us how far we had to go.

"Send to car and the new Google Maps

Send to Car will be available soon on the new Google Maps - and we want to make sure you can use the feature as soon as it’s ready. To get the Send to Car feature in the new Google Maps, you need to sign in to your Google Account and save a Send to Car enabled device to that account.

CSV vs GPX: Garmin?

Tonight, I noticed there's new labeling when choosing which file format to download. Formerly, CSV implied Garmin and has always been successful for my Garmin units. Tonight, I'm seeing Garmin associated with GPX and Rand McNally associated with CSV. For example contrast "Rest Areas Combined" with "Truck/RV Fuel Stations" and you'll see what I'm referencing.

The Deterioration Of Our Judicial System

How sad that the rich can many times buy their way out.
A 16 year old from a privileged family kills 4 innocent people while driving intoxicated and gets 10 years probation.
Why, because the attorney brings up in defense he was never taught, he was "raised in an environment of privilege that afforded him no understanding of actions and their consequences"

Texas Speed Traps

Did the size of the Texas Speed Traps file almost double??? It looked kind of suspicious so I didn't load it.

Comments?

Dealing with Highway Construction and Closed Exits

I'm new to the Dallas-Fort Worth area so I'm leaning on my GPS a lot. I'm also dealing with a lot of construction on the highways. In certain sections of the highway most of the exits will be closed.

Of course, my Garmin GPS even with the most recent maps doesn't know this, so it can take me a long time to finally reach my destination. A lot of luck is involved.

Can anyone tell me
