Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

South Asia map

I'm going on a trip at end of the month. Any point of where to get the map of South Asia.

Kitchener, Ontario to Myrtle Beach, SC

2000 miles (3200 kM) round trip.

Made two custom POIs to get Jill to take me the way I wanted, southbound and northbound. I had about 5 intermediate waypoints for south and about 9 for north. Each was numbered plus the city name, to make it easier for my wife to input each point. i.e. "1 Erie, PA", "2, Chaplin Hill, WV" etc. Since the GPS sorts by distance, you're not always certain, which is the next waypoint to enter.

American Jill did a great job directing, after my wife inputted each new waypoint.

Southbound I took the route south of Erie, PA and then through beautiful West Virginia. Had an alert for Summersville, WV, since it's billed as North America's longest speed trap.

Loved the mountains and the twists and turns kept you from getting bored.

Northbound came up I-95 to just north of Fredericksburg, VA and ultimately across the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Each route has it's pros and cons. Speed is more consistent on my north route, but scenery more interesting down through WV.

I had custom POI for all our key POIs in Myrtle Beach and it made life very easy.

However, I'm very happy that we took it one night on a "quick trip" to a Walmart. We'd been past it many times in daylight and only about 15 minutes and straight up 17. Figured I didn't need Jill's help for this. I was wrong. We accidentally got on the the ramp for Hwy 22. Thank heavens that Jill picked up the satellites quickly. Somehow, I picked a different Walmart and ended up on a half hour road trip, that ultimately came out fine. Never leave home without Jill.

Hope to go again, this spring or next October again.

Avoiding Tolls Not Always the Best

aztecvspec002 wrote:

Yesterday me and a friend went to a car race in Dc, and after decided to head up to Philly for a cheesesteak. my Garmin C330 was flawless. only lost signal in the harbor tunnel in Baltimore. Thinking about it is there a way to set the route to avoid tolls? i recently returned a TOMTOM one in trade for the Garmin. and i recall the tomtom offering the warning of tolls on the route. I'm still a noob, so any help with that would be cool.

Sometimes avoiding tolls can be more of a problem then a help. I did this on a trip back from Branson and it took me through the heart Gary, Indiana, which was under construction. I tried to avoid the Indiana Turnpike, but if I'd left well enough alone, I would have only hit a couple of tolls, which may have only cost a couple of bucks. Instead I had detours and delays.

If you're on a long trip, plan ahead and use Extra POI Editor etc. to plot waypoints that will take you routes that you want. If you leave it to the GPS alone, you may not like what you get.

St Louis Brewery tour

Used the breweries POI file to do a self-guided tour of several microbreweries/brewpubs in St Louis last weekend (with a DD of course). That POI file was actually one of the reasons we chose STL for a getaway weekend. Before downloading it, I didn't realize just how many breweries there were in that area.

The most interesting discovery of the trip was the Maple Stout at Square One Brewery & Distillery.

home

It's good to be home.

Newport, R.I.

On Veteran's Day my husband and I were fortunate enough to stay at one of the Bed and Breakfasts that offered a free evening to Veterans.
http://www.bnbsforvets.org/

We used our GPS to get us to the Beech Tree Inn in Newport, took us there perfectly. Then the next morning after a wonderful breakfast that we shared with other Veterans and their families, we took a ride all around Newport.

When we were driving around I looked at the magnificent homes and said "Wow, these must be the mansions everyone talks about." But no, they weren't.
As we drove into the historic district we came upon storybook like brick and/or stone mega mansions once owned by the rich and famous. I was awe struck.
They give tours of these homes, but we didn't have time to take one.
The Garmin worked it's magic and got us back to the enormous Pell bridge that took over the ocean and back to Rhode Island's mainland.
It was a great little visit. I can't wait to go back.

Do you think ....

jwillum wrote:

I took mine on a trip to Washington DC a couple of weeks ago. My wife gave me grief for "wasting my money" when I bought my Nuvi but it sure did come in handy when trying to find restaurants or some of the more out of the way places we wanted to see. Also came in handy when it took us around a backup on I-495. The only problem I had was trying to connect in pedestrian mode when walking around the mall right in DC. I let it go one time for about 30 minutes without ever finding a satellite. The problem never existed anywhere but there.

I'm just guessing, but do you think the satellites were blocked in that area for security purposes?

I could retire here and live here with it being so beautiful and peacefully relaxing there. If anyone wants to enjoy a beautiful place, the Pacific Northwest is a good choice.

This past weekend I used ours to navigate around the Wilmington, NC area where our son was competing in a triathlon. I'm generally familiar with Wilmington, but being able to have the hotel, a couple of favorite restaurants, and the various places we needed to be already in the gps made it a lot easier to get around.

Mich --> NY

I went from SE Michigan to Skaneateles NY, the eastern-most fingerlake.
My uncle is a bit "old school" and says he can't stand GPS units. However, near Cleveland we almost missed the 80/90 split to the I-80 toll road and the Nuvi saved a missed turn and lots of lost time.

Made it to Florida . . .

... and back again. The traffic didn't work correctly at all. I had better traffic info from my Android app. Other than that it worked great. Traveled about 2100 miles and didn't get lost.

Great Smokey Mountains

Went from CT to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. 2600 miles total. There are lots of very twisty roads down there and the GPS provided great advance notice. The altimeter was interesting information. Can go from 2600 ft and 48F to 4800 ft and 34F in minutes. Also ended up on some dirt roads and the GPS was a help in letting us know when the dirt roads were going to end.

Had CN, Topo, and National Parks mapping loaded.

There is very dramatic scenery in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park area. Highly recommended.
