Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Last Trip

Buffalo NY, Rochester, Ottowa Canada, Boston then home. Wphew no problems with the 765T.

Using GPS

I use my Nuvi 760 everywhere I go. It connects by bluetooth with my cell phone, so it keeps me legal in CA for hands-free driving. With the lifetime traffic subscription, I always have an accurate ETA to wherever I'm going - especially helpful when there's an accident or construction along the way, because it auto-reroutes if that will be shorter. Will be invaluable to navigate the always nasty traffic going through LA while traveling up to Thousand Oaks from San Diego for Christmas. What's more, I can listen with my car's radio and speakers, commercial free to my own music or an audio book via the MP3 player and the FM transmitter. It automatically mutes the music for navigation voice cues if needed, or a phone call. Its has become indispensable.

Vehicular routiing on the Appalachian Trail....

SWMBO and I were in NE Tennessee this past week end. While traveling along the south side AND the north side of Watauga Lake, Karen (cuz that is who I enjoy listening to on my Nuvi 350) kept trying to route us over the Appalachian (foot) trail to the cabins we stayed in. SWMBO would not let me take her Impala where Karen sed to go. We were laughing our fool head off. It was just tooooooo funny.

My most recent trip was a simple one. I was going to a friends house I had not been to before. It was local but my Nuvi 885 allowed me to avoid needing to look at directions - in the dark.

Before that, my 885 went to Kansas City and Dallas/Ft. Worth and my 760 went to Birmingham. In Birmingham, I mainly wanted the reminders on the turns to go between the airport and the west side of town. In Kansas City it was our hotel and my daughter's boyfriend's aunt's house. Dallas was the hotel and the airport. The 885 didn't know which one way street to turn into the hotel from but both nuvis worked fine.

Acadia National Park

Finally up here in the off-off season. It's December and winter officially starts in a couple days. It's cold (teens at night and below freezing during the day) and there's a snow covering, and supposed to get 3-5 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow.

I don't know how I ever traveled like this without a GPS.

My last trips

My last trip using the GPS was earlier this summer hitting parts of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail--specifically, Buffalo Trace (not on the Trail proper anymore, but still an interesting trip), Woodford Reserve (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), Heaven Hill (which was actually a very interesting trip for a macro-distillery) and finally the Bourbon Festival proper in downtown Bardstown.

Needless to say, the GPS was a lifesaver--a lot of these distilleries are on city streets or on isolated turnoffs (especially Woodford Reserve, which is literally in the middle of a horse farm).

This, of note, was with the GPS in the Samsung Omnia which...has much to be desired grin (Verizon originally locked this down, and unlocked it via firmware. It sucks. It gets the job done, though.)

The last trip I took with a GPS proper (rather than a smartphone with a GPS) was a few years back, specifically going down to Gatlinburg and back for a 10th anniversary "delayed honeymoon"--even then, it involved MS&T 2009 and the little Pharos USB-capable GPS and a netbook with an expanded battery pack. (This actually worked quite well.)

When I get to play with my new smartphone (going to the wonderful world of Android OS), I can't wait to give it a workout on the rest of the Bourbon Trail that I've not hit yet--and a spot or two I'll be doing repeat visits at grin

Nowhere fast

I'm bummed. I haven't needed to go anywhere where I'd need my GPS.

Just

Just another post to meet the windmill requirement. My Garmin generally stays at home. I know my way around my hometown.

Texas to Phoenix

A 2 day trip of 9 hours on day 1 to El Paso then day 2 of 6 hours to Phoenix. We got into El Paso early enough that we found a store selling pottery, high desert blankets, all sorts of antiques, saddles, and anything southwestern for your home or ranch. Good thing the car was full of presents so the amount of purchases was very limited. On the return trip that could be a different story.

Headed North

Last weekend, we headed north to visit friends & family. First trip with my new 1490T, it worked pretty well. Looking forward to our trip north again on Friday. This time we're going somewhere we've never been, and will mostly be relying on the GPS for directions.

I went to Washington, DC from Connecticut.

DC and Elk Country, PA

Went to DC again, and then detoured through Elk Country, PA, to see elk of course.

We did see an elk, a rather large male.

Also saw the ruins of what was the Austin Dam, in Austin, PA. Rather eerie looking to se such a huge structure moved out of place.
