Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Baltimore/Columbia

Trip to Baltimore, then down to Columbia yesterday. No issues (but I know the I95/I695 intersection changes - beware and be alert if you are not familiar with the recent changes). Traffic signal (TTN) was picked up pretty quickly and matched my experiences.

Did get a message about the traffic subscription expiring soon, so I need to address that.

Our Latest Trip . . .

. . . was towards Skyline Dr. and Front Royal for some late season leaf peeping. It was our first trip with the new nüvi 765T and so far I'm impressed. The traffic feature seemed spot on with the two problems we encountered.

Me Too!

I use mine all the time and when I last transfered the saved route data into Map Source it looked like I dropped spaghetti onto the city. Anyone know the maximum saved mileage on a Nuvi 250W?

Worked Great this past weekend

I did a trip from Norfolk, VA to New Haven, CT to Harrisburg, PA back to Norfolk.

The 885T never skipped a beat! When in areas covered by the MSN service, traffic showed up fairly accurately. Too bad the MSN service is going away soon. More too bad that I paid for the one time renewal. Oh well.

Shopping

Drove down to Bellingham, Wa. with my daughter for an afternoon of shopping this past weekend.

Another election

Worked another election on Tuesday, with a different group of precincts than I usually have, so the GPS came in very handy.

I tried something different this time, preloading the locations using Google Maps (rather than entering addresses into the GPS).

It's really helpful to have a navigator with me!

Good trip

Just came back from a 4500 mile trip to the west coast. First we drove from IA to Taos, NM for a shopping stop and then we drove to LA to spend time with our grandchildren for Halloween.
Since our granddaughter went to school we bonded with our grandson by taking him to the park, Knotts Berry Farm, LA Zoo, while she was in school.
Do not show photographs of your visits while the other child is watching. Boy did I goof. I have embossed in my mind her comment "Where were you when this picture was taken?" I now have to return and take her to the same places.
For Halloween we took the children to a neighborhood of restored Victorian homes and after filling their bags in 25 minutes we quit.
After this we stopped in Phoenix to visit our daughter and finally we drove home.

Texas

El Paso

Disney area

Anyone who has driven in Central Florida knows that the large number of lakes and rapid growth has made a jumble of the road system. It seems that few roads go in a straight line for very far. They are always bending and turning around some natural or man-made obstacle. Then the road name changes even though you haven't turned.

On a recent trip to Disney area, I found that the NUVI was invaluable. We had a few spots we wanted to visit (not the big parks) and it was unerring in taking us to our various destinations.

Especially at night when you are either in very brightly lighted areas of places with very little illumination it was most useful. It was great to not worry about the right twists and turns we needed to make.

Bridge closed

We recently went to the middle of the state (VT) and decided to find a McDonald's we knew should be in the area. My Garmin knew where it was, and tried to get me there but it didn't know the bridge was shut down for repairs. It tried to 'recalculate' each time I took a turn in defiance of the directions it was giving me. There really was no way for it to know the detour was in place. Maybe if there was an option to select an alternate route I could have continued to let it lead me.

Baltimore - I95 Parking Lot

Another trip to and from Baltimore today. Traffic going down was not bad. Traffic on the return trip was an entirely different story. A couple of major accidents resulted in traffic being stopped both ways north of Baltimore and major overflow on to alternate routes. The nuvi 760 and TTN let me avoid the parking lot. Personal knowledge of the general area and side roads saved me another 30 minutes or so on the alternate route (not identified on the traffic information).

Chicago, IL to Columbus, OH and Back

760 Reliable as always. We went to a retirement ceremony of one of my Navy buddies. It took us straight to the hotel and the Navy building. My friend has a Tom-Tom that could not locate the address of her hotel. I looked it up in mine and then we transferred the lat/lon to hers.

last trip

short trip - Kingston NY - Elizabeth NJ (IKEA) ..trip down flawless.. trip back GPS had me take a different route (noticed that before for other locations) and must have made at least 5 wrong turns, even with the GPS. Road signs were so confusing. Good thing the GPS rerouted me and I lost less than 5 min.

Still on it. My TT GO 930 has been very helpful. Some of the roundabout are confusing, but I just take another lap around the circle and try again! rolleyes

Just did Greece

Avoid ever driving in Athens, but if you can't, be sure to have some GPS device with current maps. I drove from Athens, to Nafplio to Kyparissi (which isn't on many maps) and had very little trouble. Mostly the Greek signing was to blame.
Last year did Spain and the Garmin Nuvi 270 was absolutely perfect in it's directions.

Another National Park Tour

I was going to have to drive to Greenville Ohio to drop off some glass, so we used Emily my C340 to take us to the following places to collect National Park Passport Stamps:

1. Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
2. Dayton Aviation Heritage sites (Huffman Field Interpretive Center, Wright Cycle Company, the Wright Flyer III at the Carillon Historical Park, and the Paul Laurence Dunbar house)
3. William Howard Taft house in Cincinnati OH
4. Lincoln Birthplace in Hodgenville KY
5. Lincoln Boyhood Home in Hodgenville KY
6. Mammoth Cave, where we did the two-hour New Entrance tour
7. Lincoln Boyhood Home in Lincoln City IN
8. George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes IN

and then we used it to go to Ladoga and Crawfordsville IN to do some genealogical research, and thence to home. Four days, 1492 miles. Yikes. No wonder I'm tired.

May be moving soon

Just had my nuvi in the Pittsburgh area for a job interview that went well - they want me up for a second on the 23rd. All this is going on at the same time I am going for a second interview for an organization in OH on the 18th.

Either one would be a great opportunity - I would not be surprised to have to pick between the two and I get to move back north with my family.

I feel truly blessed.

Florida to Arizona doing the southern tour

I recently swapped my nuvi 660 for a 765T. Wow never to look back. The nuvi saved hours of questionable routing and recovery. Houston got me both going and coming. On the return trip I-10 was closed through Houston. On one turn the 765T was slightly late with the turn instruction and I ended up in nether land. My passengers exclaimed what are we doing down here (downtown). In no more than three turns and less than two miles I was back on i-10 heading east out of Houston. That resulted in many vicarious dings as I contributed to my mental Garmin 765T appreciation fund.

Six thousand miles overall. Great trip. Primary destination Glendale AZ. Obligatory sides to Sedona for silver shopping and red rock ogling. Two days at Grand Canyon leaving by way of the eastern ridge with an unforgettable stop at the desert view watchtower.

A short jump down to Flagstaff and over to the Petrified forest. Down AZ 180 through the White mountains catching I-10 east again at Deming NM.

Decades ago we saw a postcard in eastern Texas that said "the sun is riz and the sun is set and here we are in Texas yet". That is a great thing because I-10 from El Paso through San Antonio and Houston out to Louisiana is an eyeful. Eight hundred and eighty miles of Texas. Isn't this a great country?

Bought my 855 in Sept and

Bought my 855 in Sept and almost immediately took a trip from just east of Toronto to Thunder Bay. Most of my problems were due to my inexperience with the unit. e.g. I have now learnt how to plan long trips much easier. The gps was very accurate and I was pleasantly surprised at the detail of the roads in the wilds of northern Lake Superior.

The expressway into Thunder Bay is not shown on the maps and it was amusing to see the car icon traversing wide open ground. The 855 kept trying though. Every country road we came across it kept telling me how to get back to the "Designated route".
There is an extreme paucity of stored POIs in the library for this region. I was parked in a gas sat ion and asked it to tell me the nearest fuel stop. Answer was about 55 miles away!!.

Overall I was very pleased with the 855. The remote voice control was excellent, directions were always good (except for the new highways), as were the lane assist and screen snapshots of intersections. The timing for turn warnings and voice volume were excellent.

The "Trader Joe's" Button!

A few days ago I was in a different area than I usually frequent, and needed to pick up some things while waiting for my son.

I've got a "Trader Joe's" button!

I pushed it, and my nuvi told me that was 0.6 miles from one, and it led me there.

The location has only been open for about 6 months -- thanks POI Factory!

TOC New Mexico

Bought a new TomTom 140S with digitized speech recently; I'm wanting to drive to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, just to hear what that name sounds like in a digitized voice.

Some local street names are pronounced "dead-on" when I'm out driving, while the mis-pronouncitaion of others is amusing, to say the least. Overall, though, I'm quite happy with it.

Too bad TomTom does allow us to upload pronounciation corrections like they do with map corrections. Street names could be spelled out phonetically, uploaded to their server, and then re-synthesized correctly on their end.

Last trip

My last trip was a conference in Springfield, IL. While it isn't a very complicated city, I was in meetings all day and had little time at night to see the sites and get to dinner and the hotel. It was raining cats and dogs and the tractor warnings were on the radio due to the harvest. The GPS sure made it easy to get around when it was almost impossible to read the street signs through the heavy rain.
