Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

I haven't updated my c340 since I got it! (although, I've bought two new units since, so each car has a unit now. I haven't noticed much difference in the maps on each, maybe I haven't gone into some of the heavily updated areas, though.)

Trip To Washington State and Vancouver BC

Had a great time while on vacation in British Colombia as well as the NE part of Washington State. One thing that I did realize is that when I crosed over into Canadian territory, the posted speed limit in the lower RH corner of my 1490T did not display while I was in Canadian territory and even after switching over to KM, it still did not show. However, the unit was still very accurate abd I wonder now how I survived all these years without one.

Shopping in Chicago

The Nuvi promptly got lost in downtown Chicago! I don't know if it was the tall building or what, but it showed us driving off into Lake Michigan and was telling us to turn on streets that wern't there or that would take us in the opposite direction of where we wanted to go.

I just returned from a three-week trip to my in-laws' house in Fort Myers. While I was down there, I had work a few days in Tampa and Ocala, so I decided to take the "road less traveled" by following US 301 and/or US 41 instead of I-75. On my way from Ocala to Tampa, I discovered some new RLCs in Dunnellon (which I reported to Miss POI!).

Thanksgiving Trip

As one of the millions of people traveling this thanksgiving my Garmin was worth every penny once again.

We traveled from NC to OH to VA and back to NC visiting family along the way. Garmin got most of the speed limits right, even on the year old map.

Note to others: I-95 has increased speed limit to 70 from 65 on parts between DC and Richmond.

Indiana Amish Country

Chicago to Indiana Amish Country (Middlebury, Goshen, Nappanee, Shipshewana, Bristol, Elkhart). Rain put a bit of a damper on the trip, but there were many interesting sites to see.

Highlights:

- Menno-Hof, in Shipshewana, a great museum telling the story of the Amish and Mennonites coming to America, their lifestyle, beliefs, etc. in a multimedia way.

- Midwest Museum of American Art in Elkhart, a jewel of a museum featuring Norman Rockwell and other American artists.

- Rise 'n Roll Bakery in Middlebury, nothing artifical, everything delicious, and free coffee to go along with your purchase!

- Watching boys and girls in traditional clothing (no jeans or gym shoes - dress pants with suspenders for the boys and dresses for the girls) playing baseball during recess at an Amish grammar school.

Lowlights:

- Amish food, except for baked goods (see above).

last gps trip

i think it was to my cuzin's house 4 thanksgiving, i think.....

My hubby and I went to Reno

My hubby and I went to Reno for turkey day and I'm really glad we had my Garmin with us. On our way to Reno we were able to take the new bridge from AZ to NV over the Hoover Dam, but on the way back we saw a sign on the side of the road saying that there were major backups on that route. Fortunately all I had to do was use the detour button on my Garmin and we were able to avoid all of that.

I usually leave my Garmin at home. No real advantage I can see using it in known areas. I do get redlight and speed cameras alerts on my Escort 9500ix but don't need them locally as I know where the cameras are located.

Am I missing some reason to use it all the time?

Never out of car

My nuvi 260+ is never out of my car unless I'm running updates.

The trip log function is always functioning and could be helpful in proving what your speed was in case you should erroneously get stopped for speeding or are involved in an accident.

Another use could be if your wife or other friends call you on your cell phone and tell you they are broken down and give you a location where they are. (which has happened to me)

Just how I use it !

Alaska

TomTom can find a lot of the smaller towns and roads; but as I was driving, I often would go "off-road". It is clear the roads have not moved recently, so the mapping is not that accurrate. That said, it was still very helpful.
