Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Bicycling in Minnesota

Minnesota has the best paved trails. My wife and I rode them for a week, about 230 miles total. With a Garmin in the car and one on the bike there is no way we can get lost, giving us freedom to explore in any direction.

Fort Myers

Just returned from a 10-day vacation in Fort Myers. I didn't bring my own GPSr, since my in-laws' car has a built-in GPSr. The maps were relatively up-to-date, although several POIs appear to have "closed shop" or relocated.

Nashville, TN

Went to Nashville for a pre-birthday trip.

Used the Garmin to get to the hotel, find parking in downtown Nashville, and find a few other favorite places in the area.

Also, on a side note the Garmin runs faster with the latest map update. Last years maps were bogging my gps down and making me want to throw it into the middle of traffic.

Just got back

Just got back from 15 day 3975 mile driving trip from Flor-i-duh with stops in NC, PA, NH, ME, Quebec, NY, VA.
Attended my S.O.'s daughters wedding up in Maine, celebrated my youngest sons 40th B'day in NH (where I found out I was going to be a Grampa for the 14th time), and was there in NH while my youngest daughter underwent major surgery (all went well).
Found a number of rest areas/Turnouts not previously in data base mostly on State Roads in Maine. will be in next update of "Rest Areas Combined" POI file.
Averaged 28.45 mpg on the whole trip in my 2008 Taurus.
Min price for gas was $3.319 in Winchester, VA and the highest was 3.839 in Nashua, NH.
Traffic Alert/Auto detour worked twice on the trip. One with great success near Scranton, PA and the 2nd with marginal success as it put me on US 301, off I-95, with many, many other drivers who had the same idea. Don't know whether it was a good move or not but it was different scenery anyway !
Good trip all in all !

Springfield IL

Just an overnight trip to play with the new JCV file and attend the dedication of an infant at a friend's church in Pawnee. The little car averaged 44mpg going and 41mpg returning home. We traveled mostly back roads on Saturday and some four lane returning.

Upcoming trip this week

Very excited for my upcoming trip to Washington State and Oregon. First time there for me.

I can't imagine going anywhere new without a GPS now.

Short but Sweet!

There is a major surface street in my town that leads to I-75. The surface street has been under construction, and this weekend they closed it completely till September.

I"m on this street, and need to get to the highway but it is a bad industrial end of town and I have no idea of how to get to a different entrance ramp.

So, I pop on the Nuvi and Viola! I take a right turn and 2 miles later there is an On-Ramp at the end of that road.
Very cool. I would have never thought about going down that street to get to the highway.
+1 Nuvi.

Found Doctors Office

Found a new doctor's office, in spite of Jill. When I got to the area, she told me to turn left onto the street, but there was no street there -- there was a street on the other side of the ditch, but it had a guard rail between me and it. I went past the area to find a street, and Jill told me to make a U-Turn immediately. Instead of turning around, I backed up one screen and pressed the "detour" icon.

Jill recalculated, and sent me about 1/2 mile ahead to where the real street was. I got to th appointment on time....

My last trip.

My wife and I took a three day trip into the mountains of North Carolina to cool off from the heat in Mooresville. We set our sights on Highlands and a very nice B&B called the 4 1/2 street B&B. The weather was great and we visited several waterfalls around the area. We stopped in Hendersonville on the way home and purchased some locally grown apples.

Keeping the Windmill Alive

Just got back again from Louisiana. This time for my sister-in-law's funeral. My 3790LMT worked great. Custom POI work well on the Fast Food. Two problem that I had was that my arrival time had changed, don't know why. But I think it had to do with the recently found. Clear that file and work great. The other was that my 3D terrain wasn't working. It would not zoom out. Press the minus sign and it came back. Liked all the JV helped out a lot.

updating redlight camera info

BillSolomon wrote:

I typically just install the latest version of the file and it just overwrites the pervious data in the GPS. (I make sure I change the name of the file to be the same as I used the last time - I typically just name it "Redlight Cameras")

That works for me.

Atlanta

I spent a great day in Atlanta!

Junction View helped with previewing some of the more complex junctions we encountered: I-85/I-285 Interchange; the I-85/I-75/Langford Parkway Interchange; and the I-85/GA 400 (Toll) Interchange. Being able to visualize these junctions before the trip made actually navigating them easy.

Lane Assist was invaluable in navigating the major highways and the city streets in and around Atlanta. Almost every intersection in downtown Atlanta where our route required us to turn was covered by LA.

The Offbeat Tourist Attraction POI file provided a lot of entertainment. We encountered 10 different sites over the course of the day.

We met family for lunch. Some are vegetarians. Green Sprout Restaurant (-84.36959,33.79639) is the place to go in Atlanta for vegans or a mixture of carnivores and vegetarians. The non-meat "pork" and "beef" dishes are great if you want that "meaty" meal. However, even the straight vegetable dishes are so full of flavor and texture, and are so colorful and well presented, that you won't miss the meat.

Weekend vacation

I went to the Catawba (OH) peninsula this weekend, which has a road going all around the perimeter of the finger-shaped peninsula. Every now and then, there are cross streets (residential, and well hidden from the main road). I was looking for a short-cut to the only store within 10 miles and put it in the GPS, which promptly showed a nearby cross-over street.

However, when I went down there, I found there was a guard-rail installed across the street making that road unsuitable for anyone unless you lived there.

I wish I could update that little tidbit onto my nuvi.
