Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Europe

I took mine to France and it often directed me down back roads.

I figured it was because most back roads have no speed restriction posted while main roads are all speed posted. Therefore, the routing algorithm assumes you can go as fast as you like on the back roads, making that track fastest!

Hershey, PA

Used it for our annual trek to the RV show in Hershey, PA then out to dinner and home again. About 340 miles round trip.

Trip to Castine Maine

In August of 2010 I rented from Avis, for a family vacation, a Chrysler Town and Country with a Garmin gps unit, not sure what model it was, it was pre lane assist. I drove 12 hours from Philadelphia to the village of Castine Maine, and the unit was flawless. Getting off the highway for rest areas was effortless. At the time I was not aware of any such thing as lane assist or junction view, but in hindsight I can certainly see the merit of having it. My daughter was my co-pilot and helped greatly on some ambiguous lane changes. There were a few spontaneous recalculations that did not amount to anything. Prior to the trip I was not entirely confident the trip would not be a lost in space adventure. After the trip I was sold, I trust and love my new nuvi 1450

Ridding our bikes down the Katy trail from Hermann to St. Charles, Missouri. Great trip and the little Garmin Forerunner logged our progress all the way.

Port Aransas Texas

We went for a week of vacation to the Texas gulf coast. The weather was hot and clear but very humid. The water was warm and the area had an abundance of sea turtles and migrating sea birds. I preplan the route and loaded it onto my 755T. This is a yearly trip for us but I seem to tweak the route every year.

Gettysburg

Just got back from a trip to Gettysburg, PA. Before I left, I got on Google Earth and made up a POI file of the battlefield self-guided auto tour, which I got from the Gettysburg website. I added a number of the recommended restaurants. It made the tour much easier. I was able to pinpoint each stop on the tour to within just a few feet. I also used Mapsource to make a route to and from Gettysburg. I pre-plotted rest stops, gas stations, etc. It sure made the trip go much smoother.

Great idea!

That was a great idea about creating the battlefield tour!
Thought I pretty-much know the Gettysburg Battlefield like the back of my hand (been there countless times over the last forty years), I'm going to try the same trick on a few I'm not familiar with.

GPS Stories? I got that!

Last trip: Went to Florida three years ago (I have very little time for vacations). When I pulled out my old TOMTOM 3rd Edition, my sister who's family came with us, rolled her eyes at another gadget I purchased. By the end of the trip, I had to get it out of her pocketbook!

Wait until she sees my new one!

Funny Story: My girl friend is terrible with directions (even worse that me!). She growled at me for wasting money... until she saw the GPS in action! She was so fascinated that she killed a street sign from watching the GPS screen instead of the road. A perfect driving record for more than ten years!

Did not take the trusty Garmin

with me because friend "knew where" we were going smile Yep, you guessed it, took 90 minutes to make an estimated 45 minute drive with the short cuts. Taking the Garmin next time!

Underway Soon

Looking forward to bringing my Nuvi with me on a cruise out of Ft. Lauderdale to San Juan, St. Thomas, and St. Martin. I'd RATHER have my E140W, but I don't think SWMBO will let me yank it, and the antenna, AND a power supply, just to watch where we are. So I guess the Nuvi will have to do.

Page, AZ to Grand Canyon NP

Yesterday, I made the trip from Page, AZ to the Grand Canyon NP. Even this short 150 mile trip had some routing issues with the Garmin. I wanted to go to the Trailer Village; part of the Grand Canyon Village. While the GPS did get me there, it took the long way around and for about 1/2 mile, I wasn't driving on any road according to the GPS.

Disneyland from Sacramento

We went to Disneyland from Sacramento and the "Old" GPSr (Nuvi 660 which is over 3 years old) worked very well. Even the traffic was right on the money.

Just returned

From a long trip using a Garmin 660 as well. Still works! Although the touch screen does not seem as responsive. I would say it was very helpful helping us keep on the main road, but it continues to cause a little bit of marital strife smile when it comes to warning about traffic: always seems to be out of date, but seeing traffic on the GPS always makes me want to change routes, while she has gotten used to keeping on the straight and true course, regardless of what some machine tries to tell her. (She's *almost* always right...) Still, it is a useful device!

Took a 200 mile trip down to San Luis Obispo, California to visit our daughters. One has just moved to another apartment and her sister moved into the Cal Poly dorms. The Garmin sure helps at night as our aging eyes can't see landmarks as quickly.

Gun Club

My son is involved with a shooting club. Most of these ranges are out in the sticks and kind of hard to find. The GPS is great for these trips.

Grandkids visit

We just returned from a trip from North Georgia to Louisville KY and then on to Erie PA and back home. We have two new grandchildren to see. My Garmin did its magic and we made it through rain storms, mountain scenery and no traffic delays. We used her to find our hotel lodging while we were on the road too. I don’t really know how we traveled before the GPS.

Annual Fall Jaunt - last friday

Left home in North Central Iowa around 6AM...

First stop: St. Charles, MN - Breakfast, and good coffee at (N43.97181 W92.07092) - Cabin Coffee - the first franchise store of a 'mom & pop' coffee place in my home town.

Then - on to Old Country Cheese Factory, rural Cashton, WI - (N43.71028 W90.72146) - it's in Wisconsin's Amish Country - on the winding roads to get there, one is likely to encounter horse drawn carriages, and wagons - and this time of year, harvesting done the old fashioned way - as in pre-tractor. There is nothing like cheese curds fresh from the vat, still warm, and freshly bagged.

Apples! The area along WI state highway 101 at its intersection with US-61 (N43.32695 W90.74153) and West to Gays Mills, WI (N43.31316 W90.84234) is a fine apple growing area - with several orchards along the way - Sunrise Orchard (N43.31763 W90.83117) is my favorite. Their apple doughnuts are to die for.

Final stop before heading home - Lansing, IA and their Mt. Hosmer City Park (N43.36187 W91.22223) - features two scenic overlooks down on the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge, and the town of Lansing. Has a cool bridge over the main channel of the river - and is the location of the probably most difficult turn for barge traffic on the river - almost a 90 degree turn.

Was an enjoyable day.
