Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Keep The Traffic Antenna Up

I've also found the traffic feature very useful. But when driving in the Chicago burbs: I88, I355, I57, I80 I keep the cord hanging on the rear view mirror to make sure signal pickup is good to get ample warning, especially when approaching the city from fringe reception areas.

Spent 3 days driving around the Champaign-Urbana area. Latest map update now knows about the new exit ramp to Curtis Orchard.

GPS w/Traffic

Didn't think I'd get so 'addicted' to my GPS but now that I am there's no going back. #1 item on my Xmas list is a new GPS w/traffic.

DFW Airport

Got to see Lane Assist and Junction view in action on my new 1490.

Return from Airport

Got back for a short trip only to find my 760 (stowed in the trunk while I was gone) would not power up. Not sure what happened. I guess it's feasible I accidentally powered it on prior to closing the trunk, but obviously do not recall doing so. The trip back home was thankfully smooth with no traffic issues. After charging the unit via a USB overnight, it does seem to be holding the charge fine. As this is a new battery (courtesy of the Garmin recall), I'll be keeping a close eye on the performance in the coming weeks.

last GPS trip

Recently took a trip to Puerto Rico (flew) and I took my Nuvi 255 with me to see how it would do in Puerto Rico. Although I didn't drive while in Puerto Rico ( my uncle drove us every where) I'd turn on my GPS just to see how it would do, it did pretty good except on one excursion my uncle to a road that wasn't even on the GPS map. I still have the 2009 version as I haven't updated yet.

Taking my daughter to college.

I know how to get to the college which is several hours away by expressway, but I always keep my trusty GPS in the glove box. Sure enough, the roads due to heavy construction caused us to get off and start taking rural country roads. The garmin GPS as always worked like a champ in getting us to the campus.

I always wanted a GPS of my own, but there are family members with them I could borrow if needed.

Well, one day on the way to work (8 months at this job)
I am driving along the tollway and suddenly realize nothing looks familiar!! Then it hits me, I missed my exit! I get off the Tollway at the next exit just hoping it will let me get back on the other way, or else I am guessing my way to work on the side streets.
Luckily I could get back on right away, but that was enough for me to say, TIME TO BUY A GPS!

Got it yesterday and used it today for the 1st time. It took the traffic feature some time to appear, but finally did and was kinda cool I thought.

Anyway, more trips to come! Camping trip in 2 weeks.

I did the same thing. I always use I-88 to I294 north to goto my work location. One day I had to goto Bellwood, but I automatically turned onto I294 north. Had to go to Touhy Ave to turn around. I didn't realized my GPS sound was OFF! Duh!

Always on the Road Knowing where I've Been

On a cruise

Last June, my wife and I took a cruise. After it got us to the correct place in Galveston, I took my GPS with me aboard our cruise ship. I was actually curious to see what it would do. I figured it wouldn't have any maps and would constantly show us in the middle of nowhere.

Well, it showed us right where we were. If I zoomed out enough, I could see the entire Gulf of Mexico. That was cool enough, but it showed major roads in Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel as well. I didn't need it to navigate, so I didn't see if it actually knew where it was going, but it was pretty neat to see where we were.

We are going on another cruise soon and will be in Key West. Since we are probably going to go deeper into the town than we did in June, I plan on setting it to pedestrian mode so we can find our way back to the ship.

Yeah, I'm a geek.

trips

This year we took 3 round trips from DSM to Phoenix to LA and back each time taking a different route to and from AZ.
The first time I let the Garmin pick the "Fastest" route and it took us interstate to the NE corner of AZ when we went through the mountains on 2 lane.
The second time I picked a road to Wichita and then cross country on 54 to I40 at Tucumcari to Holbrook AZ where we took the cross country roads to Phoenix. This was about 3 hours less driving time for my daughter lives SE of Phoenix.
My third trip I took the same route to Tucumcari but a different road after which was a bit longer but had less mountains, curves and trailers to follow and part was 4 lane. A bit faster yet.
Now I am planning my Christmas trip.

San Diego...

Even In My Local Area

GPS rocks, efficiently taking you to new addresses.

Efficient because even if not the "perfect" route, I don't have to worry about getting on the correct street segment for the address I want. I don't have to peer through the gloom at poorly lit street signs and address numbers hidden above doorways or on mailboxes.

How could you? I take mine even across town and here is why.

When I worked (now retired) my daily commute for 18 years took me 20 miles from my house, mostly expressway driving and on a few occasions because of traffic accidents I was made to exit unto unfamiliar streets and it wasn’t easy for me to find an alternative route on the fly.

Even if you knew the route to San Diego I recommend having it with you for those unforeseen detours on the road.

I took it with me to Myrtle Beach this summer, I flew there from Texas,. Its pretty neat to see where you are on a flight. I got nailed for a ticket driving the rental, If I had an updated map perhaps I would have noticed the ridiculously low speed limit. Left my Garmin in the rental car in the rush to catch my flight home. Fortuantly I have an old spare, but just bought a new one yesterday.. smile

Tom Tom

A friend asked me to help him on a job. He uses a Tom Tom which was the first time I had used anything other than Garmin. I had a hard time setting it up at first but once I figured it out it worked great to get me to the location.

Hawaii

Used my 755 on the "Big Island". It did ok except when you traveled the back roads. We were looking for the Hawaiian Vanilla Company which is out in the boondocks and the Garmin had no clue as to where the address was. My wife used iPhone and Google maps to see Sat view of area and found our destination. To say the least I was dissappointed in my 755. If you plan on using a Garmin on the "Big Island" I would preplan my destinations and enter the coordinates as opposed to letting the system find the address.

Another election--

I used my Nuvi to get from precinct to precinct on Election Day. Had a trainee with me part of the day, and he was sold on GPS real quick! Push "Favorites" and select the precinct number (I'd mapped them out previously), and hit "GO" -- I don't know the best way to get there from here, but the little box does!

He also got a kick out of the female Aussie voice, and the overall flexibility of the system. He's been contemplating getting built-in Nav on his next car, and now has more things to ask about.
