Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

San Antonio

Made a trip (flight) to San Antonio this week and took the 760 with me. The relatively new overpass implementation near the airport through the device for a loop (multiple loops actually) and makes a strong case for either updating my older maps or loading an extract from OSM for sites I visit. No serious performance issues, although I did have difficultly picking up satellites while walking in the downtown (Riverwalk) area (near tall buildings).

Travel to and from the home airport was fine.

Wife found a good use for new GPS

Have told my wife not to worry about the thick fog here in the California central valley, just trust the GPS. That didn't work, so I showed here what tracks were good for. Now she can keep a track on me.

NJ

NJ

All around Las Vegas....

friends from MD visited and we went on a day long sightseeing trip, including the Hoover Dam. Great time!

Travel with GPS

I too use my GPS daily as I travel across North Carolina (Work related). I've added a combination of GPS and my Blackberry phone with POYNT program. POYNT will give information on what's close to you, like restaurants, businesses, hospitals and so on. Then to save BB battery time, I punch in the information given in POYNT to my gold old Garmin GPS and off I go to new adventures. I've found the best NC BBQ (not going to push which type I like best), local family run restaurants (not the cookie cutter type) and just about every campground site in North Carolina. I'm heading to Dallas in March (not sure if I'm driving or flying yet). I expect to use the heck out of my GPS if I drive.

Will my windmill rise from it's ashes?

Posting in the Garmin forum did not make my windmill come back to life, so I will try here.

Of course there is a difference between "Keeping The Windmill Alive" and resurrecting a dead one, but it is worth a post to see. smile

This evening I took my wife out to dinner and used my new 295W to navigate there. I knew the way but wanted to test it out.

Went to the Apple House in Linden, VA for Buffalo Burgers.

Hmmm... so in effect one has to be active for 4 weeks rather than the stated 3 weeks? (I was credited with 3 weeks as of Monday Jan 24)

No matter though, I can wait.

Last Trip

A few indoor flea markets, took us on some nice scenic roads in NJ snow covered of course.

Costco

Went to Costco this weekend. Always a fun trip!

New Jersey

Used mine to drive to a wedding in NJ. Worked very well.

Only catch is that I got it with bluetooth and every time someone called me on the cell phone, the screen is completely blocked by a message of an incoming call, and the voice stops giving you instructions where to go!!

Isn't this what it states on "My Account" page?

You have qualifying activity in 3 of the past 5 weeks.

You have qualifying activity in 3 of the past 5 weeks.

That says that I have 3 weeks of qualifying activity. It does not say it takes 5 weeks to qualify.

The requirement for a windmill is to be “an active member”. The requirement to be considered as an active member is:

“You automatically become an active member when you've made posts in at least 3 of the last 5 weeks. Activity includes uploading POI files and/or posting in the discussion forums.”

Therefore I am an active member right now but have no windmill.

Thus if I have to wait until next monday, as I said, "in effect one has to be active for 4 weeks rather than the stated 3 weeks".

Nothing special - to and from Costco - and no issues. Too cold and too much winter weather for anything exotic!

To my one and only friends house. I need the gps because he has only live in the same house for 12 years. Had to make sure I could find the place.

Dancing in Montgomery, AL

I had a great evening dancing in Montgomery. The only thing that would have made it better was having access to the redlight file. When I got home, I found my Windmill and the file ready for download. Made a great day even better!

Brookshire Texas

Visiting the Lone Star state and using the GPS to find points of interest. One place we stopped was a restaurant in Brookshire, TX. Top shelf food, and has a community conscience. The wait staff are special need adults that do a great job. If I lived closer, I'd have lunch there daily! Prices are right and white linen tablecloths and napkins. Feels like a 5 star restaurant. They also have an adjoining garden center and gift shop.

You might need your GPS to find the driveway in the snowbank... grin

I keep my 760 on all the time in the car, so everywhere I go, it's a trip with the GPS. But this past weekend, I did take a trip up to Springfield, MA (from Long Island, NY) for a large model railroad show. We had two carloads, and the lead driver had his own route that disagreed with the Garmin - taking the Merritt Parkway to I-91, rather than I-95 to I-91, but the routes were within minutes of each other. On the way home, he called me to ask the exit number for the Merritt - I told him Garmin didn't want to take the Merritt, so he was on his own to figure out exit numbers. razz

Last trip

my last trip was to New Tazewell Tennessee beautiful ride after got thru Knoxville and started up Highay 33 looks like they have really lowered the water on the lake a lot guess they expecting alot of snow this year .

Any old boat that will keep afloat

While working on a post on another thread I downloaded some Australian Pois this morning and put them on my Garmin 255W.

Just for fun I went to simulator mode and set my location to where I live in western South Dakota. I asked Karen to calculate a route to one of the Pois in her homeland.

She told me that she could not calculate a route.

I would have thought she could at least have gotten me to the coast and then told me to take a boat from there.

Maybe I should try to find an amphib to use as a vehicle. smile

Costco and Back

Nuvi 760 performed well. Weather outside was drizzle with was mist, but not too bad. Did a side by side comparison with Google Navigation on an Android phone and was impressed with the performance of the Android.
