Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? - September 2011

The original discussion topic started by CherylMASS back in 2007 has been very popular; with over 3500 replies it's grown to be the longest thread at POI Factory.

In order to make things easier to navigate (and help avoid future technical surprises), I'm going to start a new topic each month like we do for the joke thread.

Here is CherylMASS' original post, continued here...

CherylMASS wrote:

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

Thank you CherylMASS for starting the original "Keeping the Windmill Alive" thread at POI Factory.

Now let's continue posting here...

Finally on the road....

for a 6 week trip to PA/NY to ride the Fall colors. Day 1 was to Bryce Canyon via Route 14/89. All I can say about Bryce is one word....B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Day 3 on to Grand Junction for the Colorado National Monument. So far it's been GPS only all the way!

Totally agree about Bryce Canyon

We totally agree with your description of Bryce Canyon which we visited several years ago. Made up a slide show of the 100 + pictures I took there - very impressive.
As far as I'm concerned it's far more impressive, overall, than the South rim of Grand Canyon.

If you took it with you on the plane, turned off, and did not power it up until getting to DC, that's normal. It needs to settle in to which of the GPS satellites it can see, and then begin to function. 5 minutes is quite normal for that.

Wife's First Time

Wife took a trip to CA and I plugged in the address for her aunt. This was the first time "she" ever used a GPS. Nuvi255W. Got her there and back...without instructions. That says something right there. Now she wants her own GPS.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

Texas to Iowa

Went to Iowa over Labor Day to visit my kids. Joplin, MO is the mid-point and we stopped for lunch. Amazed at all the destruction form May's tornado there. My heart goes out to all of those who lost friends and family in that storm. Words just can't describe it.

Quite the trip there. Seeing Benton Harbor reminded me of Heathkit....built alot of those electronic kits over the years before they stopped making them. But I've heard just recently they are slowly getting back into the kit business.

Went to post in the old topic, and couldn't figure out why I didn't have the option to do so. Now I see it was locked and a new thread started...

My last GPS trip was this past Saturday, I was photographing a wedding, and used my 760 to make sure I arrived on time. I did, and everything went well!

Latest trip

Just got back from Portland, OR. After a week with the grandkids, wife and I set off to our traditional first destination of our "just us" time -- up the Columbia Gorge to Goldendale, WA. After we get there, we spread out a map and negotiate our next stop (and we do the same thing the next night, etc. with the only aim being getting back to Portland in time for farewells and our flight back). For the record, other stops were Toppenish, Yakima, Ellensberg (for the rodeo). We use AAA "scenic route" indicators (black dots) to select routes from place to place, but also try to find our own beautiful routes off the interstates. Wish someone would begin a thread on "gorgeous drives" -- I'd throw my two cents in, for sure.

Wow!

While I was busy with family, I think I may have lost my Windmill! Ironic.
Glad to see the topic was/is a hit.

Edit: Nope, looks like I didn't. Whew, that would have been embarrassing! smile

Just got back from San Luis

Just got back from San Luis Obispo...shipped off my daughter back to school. It's just the first of many because she has a lot of stuff to bring back to school this year since she will not be staying in a dorm room. She is now in a two bedroom unfurnished townhouse.

Far, far north

Up to Chisasibi and Radisson, QC, then over to Prince Edward Island, then over to Cape Breton National Park, NS, and then to Acadia National Park, then back to Connecticut.

The Garmin GPSMAP60CSx was fantastic throughout.

Drive home from work

Still using my Android based navigation for most trips, I ran into an issue with the GPS not locking on a recent trip. A reboot of the phone fixed the problem, but I only did that after getting home. On a longer trip or in an unfamiliar area, pulling over and rebooting would have been required. While my Nuvi has very occasionally frozen, it's pretty rare.

Other than that, the trip was uneventful.

California

Getting lost here. For the week number two.

Do I know the way 'round San Jose
I've been here too long.

Garmin 2360 with EcoRoute HD

Atlanta to Myrtle Beach and return using subject equipment. Outstanding performance and caluculated gas mileage was spot on with manual calculations. Helps identify power range that yields the best mileage pulling an RV. It is always good to have POI factory data on board for quick and easy reference.

Border hopping

Went to Niagara Falls over the long weekend, was more of an excuse to enter Canada. One funny thing was the number of times I had to cross border first at Niagara Falls and later on at Thousand islands. Since did not have any mobile coverage, entering some POIs apriori in GPS saved the day at many places.

New nuvi

Brand new nuvi 2460. Binghamton, NY arrow Watkins Glen track arrow Washington, DC arrow home in Port Orange, Fl. Really happy w/ this GPS. It's a challenge, tho, finding the right place for it in my (overloaded) Miata. smile
