Keeping the Windmill Alive - Where was your last trip with your GPS?

If anyone is in danger of losing their windmill, maybe you can share with us the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you use it to seek out special places to go. (Like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.) Anything to keep your windmill alive smile.

This isn't my last trip, but I thought I'd share this.

My sister and her husband just got back from England and Scotland. Before they left they purchased a Nuvi 270. She said it saved their marriage.

With absolute accuracy, it took them down old dirt wagon roads and goat paths until they reached their destination - an old English cottage in the middle of no where that belonged to an old aunt. I saw the pictures of these four ft. wide dirt roads and was amazed that a GPS even knew they existed.

The GPS also was a big help in city driving as well.
After much debate, they were truly happy with their decision to buy it for this trip. She said the could have rented one for $20 a day out there and they stayed 20 days. Considering they paid $400 for it here in the US, it paid for itself. My sister said that if she never used it again, she got her monies worth!
(Being a golfer and a motorcycist, I'm sure she'll be using it again, and again.)

Did a motorcycle charity run.

The route leader of a charity run fell sick the day of the event. The charity org. got a substitute route from the dealership hosting the event, but didn't have a ride leader, so they were asking if anyone was willing to lead any groups.

I used my new 765t to lead a small group through the route. I've only had it for about 2 weeks, and don't know how to create routes using the unit itself. (I have used mapsource, but that was not an option at the time) So the garmin became an onboard map, but once I got the swing of it, it worked out great. I only made two mistakes that caused us to double back, which is not bad for a 75 mile track that I've never ridden.

My last trip was from

My last trip was from Edmonton to Vancouver via Jasper, Banff, Kelowna. And back to Edmonton via Whistler, Kamloops, Calgary and then Edmonton.
In the begnning, I tried to use Custom Route. Added Edmonton as starting point and vancoucer as the end destination. Then added Columbia Icefiled, Banff, lake Louise etc as waypoints. My Nuvi started taking us on a stramge route from Edmonton to Columbia Icefield. After one hour lost, I figured that we were not on the right track. Then cancelled custom route and slected Jasper as desitnation. Then it put us on right tract. After this I just used point to point for directions and no more issues.

Hope everyone have a safe and wonderful Labor Day weekend!

Roanoke VA

A few years ago many of my sisses & spouses and I met for a birthday party at Wanda's house. No problem. Then we adjourned to a niece's house on the other side of town. I was the only vehicle of the five with a GPS. Just before the destination, we turned on Pinetree Lane, which is a gravel driveway, through apparent private property. A nice lady laughed as we passed by.. This year we all gathered again and the routine was the same, except everyone had a GPS. Barbara & I in the lead, turned early, then watched everyone else slow down, then proceed to Pinetree ln. We were at Shirley's house a minute or two before they arrived. Like, "Why didn't you tell us?"

I took my GPS camping this weekend. It got a lot of use as I found yet another bridge being worked on. Their detour took me way out of the way, but the GPS figured out a shorter route.
It also came in handy when I found out that there was a tourist train in the area. Typed in the address and off I went to find the WK&S Railroad.

Delaware Labor Day weekend trip

Used my Garmin 1490t on my weekend getaway to Delaware. I had no issues with the GPS. Surprisingly, my mileage for the trip was 29 mpg (I used my gas receipt and odometer to calculate this), which I had never seen before in the ten years I've had my vehicle (at best low to mid-20's. The only two things that I can think of: 1) I got new tires recently that supposedly have reduced rolling resistance and 2) the built-in ecoRoute function on my 1490t (no, not the Bluetooth add-on) has made me more conscious of my driving style, i.e. I try not to rapidly accelerate or decelerate. Either way, I'm not complaining!

Cocoa Beach

Went out to Cocoa Beach Florida over the weekend with my new 1490T. I really love the traffic feature (came in real handy over Labor Day Weekend!) and Junction View is pretty slick....though I noticed something interesting.

Junction View used to come up just before I came to a traffic junction, but now, after updating the firmware & de-fragging the unit, it now shows Junction View about a mile before reaching the intersection. I don't know if it was the de-frag, or the new firmware, but it came as a surprise.
I think I like it better this way, gives me more time to switch lanes, but I'm still not quite used to it....it would be nice if you could set the distance (like with custom POIs)

Kings Dominion

We went to Kings Dominion this weekend, where we got our first chance to ride the Intimidator 305 coaster... simply awesome. In fact, it's so intense that a lot of people tend to "grey out" during the ride and KD has been tweaking the ride speed a bit in an attempt to minimize this effect.

The GPS routed us away from traffic and took us through a bit of DC to get there - man are there a lot of cameras in DC! One of the more interesting speed cameras looked like 3 cameras set up in a row on both sides of the road, at a 45 degree angle to the direction of traffic. Our Nuvi faithfully reported each one... thanks POI Factory!

I noticed a couple of apparent map glitches when traveling 95/495 around DC where it didn't seem to have the exits just right but it worked flawlessly otherwise.

Interesting Routing

I just did a round trip from Virginia Beach to Charlotte, NC this past weekend.

I have NO IDEA why my Nuvi 885T tried to take us via I-85 business rather than staying on the "regular" I-85 in NC. I followed the recommendation going down, and ignored it coming back. No appreciable difference either way in traffic, road quality, or time to go.

Hmmmm....

San Jose to Bellingham & Back With My Nuvi 350

Just got back from a 7 day trip from San Jose, up along the Oregon coast to Seattle and then on to Bellingham and back. The Nuvi performed flawlessly with one exception: My first night was spent in Crescent City, CA. To get to the hotel, my nuvi wanted me to turn right onto a nonexistent street. When I finally found the hotel, it was down the highway a couple of blocks on the other side of the street.

I had loaded an assortment of POI's to guide me along the way. As others have stated, I wish there was some way to limit the number if times that the proximity announcements play. In an area with multiple POI's there is what seems to be a constant flow of chatter. This was just an annoyance, and the 350 was performing just fine.
