Can you open the new .docx in the Office 98 or Office 2007?

Have you tried to open the new extension of .docx. I have not installed my Office 2000 and was wondering? Does the formatting work ok if you have tried this?

You can certainly open an DOCX file in Office 2007 as that is the default file format for that version of Office Word.

I have never heard of Office 98 for Windows. There's Office 98 for Mac. MS Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and Powerpoint only supports Office 2000, 2002 (aka Office XP) and 2003. Older Office versions are not supported.

Thanks

This was discussed already, didn't it? Anyway, I'm using Office XP (2002) and 2003 with compatibility pack installed.

While I can open Office 2007 (and newer versions) files, the formatting isn't always correct. Some DOCX, XLSX files do not convert properly or can't open at all.

Did you check to make sure you had the latest driver update first before reverting back?Go to control panel, system and on left side click device manager.Find DVD/CD-Rom Drives then click on side arrow and when the device shows.Right click on it and select update driver.

This link lays it out very well plus other things that you also may check http://goo.gl/0Hrn7E especially Compatibility. The way you get to each step is different then what the link covers on Windows updates. Now found in notification panel under Update and Security.

Drive not found is easily fixed as detailed in the link below

beagle.fan wrote:

It's not a driver problem it's a registry problem, the Microsoft CD/DVD driver from 6/21/2006 works fine in windows 10.

This is a common problem and not just related to windows 10 it also occurred in Vista and windows 7. It is related to upper and lower filters being entered into the registry drive info by some program and is easily fixed by a registry change or by running the auto registry fix in method 4 in the different ways to fix the problem in the link that follows:

if you do not want wait to retrieve space from windows.old

In case you want to retrieve the disk space from windows.old directory if you do not plan on rolling back to old windows version you can do it from within windows 10. I have already done it on my computers as I have no desire to go back to windows 7 and after doing that I did a system image back up to my WD MY Book backup drive using the built in windows 10 system image option. Worked great and backed up the image at the rate of around 75GB an hour using the firewire 800 connection.

One month after you upgrade to Windows 10, your previous version of Windows will be automatically deleted from your PC. However, if you need to free up disk space, and you’re confident that your files and settings are where you want them to be in Windows 10, you can safely delete it yourself. Keep in mind that you'll be deleting your Windows.old folder, which contains files that give you the option to go back to your previous version of Windows. Deleting your previous version of Windows can’t be undone.

1. Go to Start, enter Settings in the search box, and then select Settings.

2. Select System > Storage > This PC and then scroll down the list and select Temporary files.

3. Under Previous version of Windows, select Delete previous versions and then select Delete.

The thought of millions of computers, owned by people with no tech-savvy, and WIFI Sense enabled, scares the crap out of me.

Windows 10 seems destined to be remembered for a couple of major blunders: the forced installation of bug fixes without a rescue disk or back-out hotfix uninstall util for when the fixes make the system unbootable, sharing your WiFi passwords with your social media contacts -- might as well just post them online, disabling System Restore by default -- the feature most used to rescue previous Windows versions, disabling file extensions by default -- executable files can appear as anything...

Final quote from the article -- "You should wait to install Win10 on your primary or production PCs ... Let tech writers and equally insane Windows users install Win10 first and report what they find."

They seem to be trying to

They seem to be trying to force people to upgrade right away, and while I'm not against a free upgrade I'd rather wait until the first service pack is released. There's certainly nothing wrong with my Win7 machines, although free is good in the case of upgrade pricing.

You will have a very long wait for the first service pack

Microsoft announced that with windows 10 there will no longer be any service pack releases as in the past. They will be doing weakly updates with fixes, tweaks and new features but no large complete overhauls as they did in the past.

They have been doing a weekly update that includes all updates to date, your computer will only download the updates that have not been already installed to date. So if you updated last week you will only get the updates from the last week but if you have not updated for 3 weeks you will get the last 3 weeks and so on.

I have run every windows version since the first one and without a doubt windows 10 is far better than any prior version including windows 7. Everyone I know that has done the update to windows 10 is very pleased and all remark how much faster their computer does everything after the update. I haven't had a problem with any of my old software other than one 16bit one that windows 10 64 bit will not run or install, it will still work if you have windows 10 32bit.

At this point, aside from needing the latest Radeon video driver, everything on this old (2007) Dell Optiplex 755 is working well.

PS CS 2 works fine, as does Office 2007 Enterprise. Only 2 progs have needed to be run in Compatibility Mode for XP Pro.

Intel has a program to check for drivers needed for Windows 10. Yesterday I downloaded it. Before I could open it it downloaded something. I then opened and ran it and it said no new drivers found. I closed it then tried games again and everything works great. It must have downloaded my graphics driver just after it downloaded.

I can only tell you the learning curve is small at best. Went from Windows 8.1 and never lost a step. Once you discover the notification panel and Cortana there is nothing to it.Glad I made the change.Already deleted all the old 8.1 files.Have no plans of going back.

If you don't like it you can go back.Thats your choice.

Issues in the past with new version

UnNamed wrote:

They are eager to give it away to help people think about actually upgrading. After experience with Windows versions in the past (Windows ME, Vista, and to lesser extent 8), many users are apprehensive about upgrading. When a good version comes around like 7, many people would be unlikely to change if it wasn't a free upgrade.

Windows wants people to realize it's a good OS and actually upgrade.

Also, once consumers update to Windows 10 and get used to it, large companies which use Enterprise versions will have to pay. Smaller companies which use Pro licenses get free upgrades like consumers.

Unlike your subject title, rjrsw, it is expected that nrbovee and others will not have a long wait for what used to be called Service Pack 1. True, Microsoft does not expect to call them "Service Packs" anymore, but there will be periodic new releases of Windows 10 for those upgrading later, similar to the concept of Service Packs, with the first one coming this fall:

"Which brings us to the next major release of Windows 10: Microsoft's been tight-lipped, but it's widely believed that plans are afoot to release the next wave of Win10, code-named Threshold 2, in October."
from http://www.infoworld.com/article/2973432/microsoft-windows/w...

Part of the reason it's expected to be coming just a few months after Windows 10 was available is for people like nrbovee who "always wait for Service Pack 1", heh.

bsp131 wrote:

It is a huge upgrade in both function and speed over windows 7 and the learning curve coming from windows 7 is very short and easy and mostly intuitive.

I deleted the windows.old directory on both of my computers in the first week and had no thought of ever rolling back to the old windows.

Everyone I know that has done the upgrade loves it almost immediately and the first comment is how much faster their computer is now.

Re: Why are they so eager to give it away?

UnNamed wrote:

They're so eager to give it away because instead of selling an operating system for $100 that you will use for years, they are monetizing much more data about you, what your e-mail says, where you browse, etc., similar to Google and Apple. You have much less privacy with Windows 10 than with Windows 7. It's in the User Agreement. Cortana for example is analyzing everything you ask her and sharing it with Microsoft. Also they hope to be able to sell you Office and other apps for a monthly subscription fee.

Bottom line: it ain't really "free." Microsoft is a publicly-traded company that has to answer to stockholders, and Microsoft will have plenty of ways of making plenty of money from you, better than if you buy a $100 disk and use it for years without further compensation to them.

Upgraded two of my computers and helped a woman friend update hers and all 3 were running Office 2007 programs and all three worked with no problem on all office 2007 programs after the upgrade to 10.

I found only one old program that I had that would no longer work because it was 16 bit and would not install or run on 64 bit windows. It would have still worked in windows 10 32bit so if you need to run old 16bit programs go with windows 10 32bit.
