The thing I worry about

I worry that Office 2010 will not be brought over. I chated with Microsoft Office and they said I would not have Office 2010 if I upgraded to Windows 10.
Don't think I want to chance it.

Thanks for the post, will come in handy if I do change my mind.

Office 2007 works fine in windows 10 both 32 & 64bit

charlesd45 wrote:

I maintained all my Office tools. Word,Excel and Power Point. That was also one thing I was worried about also but it all worked out.

I could not do the upgrade on either of my computers, kept failing till I selected just my personal files when asked what to keep during the installs.

I had to reinstall all my apps on both computers and reinstalled Office 2007 Enterprise edition and installed fine and everything works as it did in Windows 7.

Just found this for Office Starter 2010 (this is what I have)

"Which versions of Microsoft Office work on Windows 10?
The following versions of Microsoft Office with the latest Service Packs have been confirmed to be compatible with Windows 10:
Office 2016 Preview
Office 2013/Office 365
Office 2010 with exception Office Starter 2010
Office 2007
Older versions of Office such as Office 2000, Office 2003 and Office XP are not certified compatible with Windows 10 but might work using compatibility mode.
Resources: A look at running older versions of Microsoft Office on Windows 10
Is Microsoft Office Starter 2010 compatible with Windows 10?
Please be aware that Office Starter 2010 is not supported. You will be prompted to remove it before the upgrade starts.

No, desktop Office 2016/Office 365 or no prior version will not be free. The Microsoft Office Team developed a special touch optimized version of Microsoft Office for Tablets running Windows 10. This will be a free limited functionality version gear towards basic editing in Tablet mode. It lacks many of the capabilities of desktop Office. You can download it from the store."

There is a graphic that shows when you are upgradeing you will be told you can not go any further if you do not uninstall Office Starter 2010.

This is the link incase someone else has Office Starter 2010 and is wanting information.

Hi Charles and T923347 , Well i Tried Updating , Uninstalling / Installing Drivers. Diagnosing to no avail, Seems like i cant connect to my router(netgear r7000) or limited connection. How to clean install upgrade Win10

Many posts ago, someone asked here how to do a clean install. I realize that poster probably worked it out by now (or gave up), but for anyone else looking for the instructions, they're found here:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/microsoft-quietly-rewrites-its-...

Scroll two-thirds of the way down the above webpage **below** the "Step 3" heading, where it says:
"For those who are anxious to do a clean install, here's the trick:

Don't do the online upgrade.

Instead, from your current, activated copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, download the Windows 10 ISO file..." [click the link above for the rest of the instructions].

That article leads off with detailed info about how activation works in Win10 (*very* different from previous versions), useful if you're having a Win10 activation issue.

A couple observations/questions

Have you experienced either of the following? If not, do you have a suggestion for me to cure the issues?

1) I like to keep my browsers covering only about 80% of my display when I open the browser. I find that the new Edge browser ignores my past settings and always opens maxed out to use the entire display. Chrome has no problem remembering the display size and position. It seems odd that Edge doesn't remember, espcially since it may be that this is not an Edge issue but rather is a Win 10 issue for remembering programs' window size settings.

2) Even with an active internet connection, I find that Cortana occasionally says I need to try again later because I can't connect right now.

Nice Windows 10

Windows 10 seems to be a good system. The learning curve to set it up so it does what you want it to is not hard. If you want it to share it will, if you don't want it to share it won't. Can't ask for anything more.

I have an old D-Link but no need for it since I boutht the new one, although there are newer ones on the market that do more and I am looking at them. We streem movies and the Netgear WNDR4500 works great with SD but on HD we have momentarly black screens a little during the playback of HD. It may be our internet as it is 10 speed but goes up and down at times. I don't know if the new routers would do any better.

I don't use Edge as my default browser but I have not found the problem you are having. Every time I open Edge the display window and it's position are exactly where they were when I last shut Edge down.

Browser position

Many apps will remember their window position if you hold the shift key while clicking the X to close them. The next time you open it, they will remember the previous position and size.

Give that a try.

I'm in the same boat as CraigW. It never remembers and always opens maximized. Btw, what if you resize Edge (smaller or larger than its current window size), close it and then re-launch it. Does it remember its last size and position?

Yup.

Exactly the same/revised size. The only difference is that it does not appear in exactly the same place on the desktop.

Windows 10: Things that need fixing

The first thing I tried when the upgrade finished was cleaning off the Start screen. (BTW: I later went back to 8.1 which was a completely painless experience.) Anyway, maybe it's me, but the "multi-select" feature for the tiles was gone. i.e.: previously you could touch and select a whole bunch of them and then perform the desired operation: (delete, re-size etc.) I have to believe this was a oversight and will be corrected in a release down the road. If someone out there does see this working with W10, please let us know.

In the brief time I explored Windows 10 before reverting back to 8.1, I did notice that Firefox was having a hard time making the "adjustment" to Windows 10. This was mainly manifested in exactly what is mentioned here with Edge: Roll-of-the-Dice when it came to opening a new Firefox window: sometimes the same size, sometimes smaller or larger. I assumed it would go away once a new version came along. Just going by the number of new versions of Firefox released since July 30th, I bet the issue has been corrected.

I noticed all the updates coming through for Firefox too, and figured they were responses to Windows 10 issues. I only went back for a couple of reasons that really had no particular dis-satisfaction reason with Windows 10. The first was a desire to test the Microsoft-provided 30-day "roll-back" feature; it worked flawlessly: the laptop was restored like nothing happened, including several Tiles I created with custom Icons. The second reason was a desire to make a permanent switch after the anticipate SP1 release. I didn't expect it to come so soon and I'm glad I hesitated and didn't download it: the issues with SP1 have been well documented. My current plan is to pick a blizzard-bound weekend this winter to make the jump. In six months we should be seeing "SP6" and it will be time! wink

According to Microsoft there will be no more SP releases just weekly tweaks, fixes and some added features but no more major redo like they did in the past with the SP1 and so on releases.

The weekly large releases are cumulative and not only include new things but everything that has already been included in all the prior releases. If you do a search with the release number it takes you to the releases info and states that right there and then lists every thing that is included in the release.

This is the latest one Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081438).

If you do a Google search for :KB3081438" you will see what I mean.

After reading about some of the issues as far as compatibility, I think I will stick with Windows 7.

I still use Office 2003 and I need nothing better than that. I do not want to get stuck upgrading to Office (Latest & Greatest), just because Microsoft wants to force me to do that.

All my other programs may not be the latest, but I don't need the latest. The only thing that I upgrade to the latest, are my Garmin maps, and that's only done when I go on a trip.

I had a tuner in my desktop that I used to record from the unscrambled HD feed from Comcast using media center but when Comcast scrambled the HD local channels I no longer had any need because the area I am in I cannot get OTA signal.

There is other software apps other than media center that will still allow you to use the tuner if you have a useable signal still available.

No success. And none with the earlier suggestion to close Edge while pressing the shift key.

What's odd is that my primary Win 10 desktop always opens Edge full screen regardless of my trying to change it, but on a backup PC, I can get the PC to remember the size of my desired Edge but not the location. On the backup PC, Edge now opens to my desired size but it appears midscreen rather than slightly off to one side as I wish.

Chewbacca has confirmed that (in this case only rolleyes ) I'm not crazy. There must be some setting or configuration causing differences between our PCs. If anyone ever finds a solution, I'd love to know it. Google didn't help me just now with two searches to see if others are reporting the Edge size/location issue although different search terms might have worked.

It would be more understandable (and much more aggravating) if this window issue appeared for all programs/apps but it doesn't. As far as I can tell, it's only a problem with Edge.

Update Completed

I got my update from Windows 8.1 completed last night. It took four times running the media creation tool to make it through. Had a problem with the Intel display driver, igdkmd64.sys. When I changed to the Microsoft basic display adapter it worked.

So far I'm happy, but I haven't tried everything yet.

A good suggestion but no success. I don't have an Edge icon on my desktop. I can either start Edge from the taskbar or from the start menu and neither offers a right-click 'properties.'

I did add Edge to my desktop and saw that its properties were set to Normal Windows. Starting from the desktop, Edge continues to open maximized rather than with the settings I prefer.

Edge works fine on my laptop and desktop computers

I did add Edge to my desktop and saw that its properties were set to Normal Windows. Starting from the desktop, Edge continues to open maximized rather than with the settings I prefer.

Perplexing.

I still use IE for most web browsing but have used Edge and Chrome browsers occasionally with windows 10 64 bit and all three open as they were the last time I used them.

On another subject all my old apps still work in Windows 10 and the surprising thing is that I didn't have to install the patches or fixes that I had to use with Vista and Windows 7 to make them work correctly.
