W10 Anniversary Edition Automatic Update.

Well, the wait is over. I have been checking for updates daily to see when Microsoft would force out the Anniversary edition. It did so today and didn't give me the option for "Install Now". As soon as it finished Checking For Updates, it started installing 1607. So it appears the protect window for reverting to W7 is 60 days. I did the free W7 to W10 upgrade on July 21.

The anniversary update went fine. It took about 90 minutes on my machine. It trashed my old Vista Windows Mail program, but that often happens with Windows updates, so I know how to fix it. The Windows Mail program (winmail.exe) isn't officially supported on W7 or W10 (it was replaced with Live Mail), but I still prefer the old Windows Mail.

You are very welcome Mary.

My computers are setup for automatic updates too, but when I think about it I do a manual check for updates on Tuesdays, because Microsoft still puts out most of their updates on Tuesday.

I also had the Adobe Flash Player update and the October Malicious Software Removal update.

Anniversary Update.

We have a little "Netbook" with flash memory. The update needs 16GB free space and this box does not have it. There is no option to use an external drive for this so we are stuck!

I have a Netbook and when I did the original update it would not work so I went on Microsoft and downloaded to USB drive to get the 1st Windows 10. It did update to the new anniversary ok.

When I put Windows 10 on it I did a completely new install. Everything was new. I then put back things I did use on it. The Netbook works greater now than when it had Windows 7.

Maybe Windows web site has the anniversary software so you can try from a USB stick.

Your link gets a 404 error so here are the basic steps.

Even though you may desire to continue with Windows 7 until January 2020 when it officially is not supported, it may be a good idea to prepare for the "free" update just in case MS decides to pull the freebie route with all the hoopla on end-of-life for Windows 7. To do this you first of all need to be certain you have the Product Key for the current version of Windows 7 (or later). The product key is five groups of five characters, AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE with a mixture of alpha and numerical characters. If you can't find a sticker on your PC that has the required info, then I suggest you use NirSoft's free ProduKey to be found at http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html. Once you download, unzip and run the utility, make certain you write down the Product Key. There is also a free product from Belarc called Belarc Advisor that can be found at https://www.belarc.com/products_belarc_advisor. That will retrieve your Product Key as well as a ton of other worthwhile info, should you ever need it. If you use the Belarc utility, print the results, usually about 5 page in landscape mode for future purposes.

OK, now you have the Product Key. The next step is to create the Windows 10 Installation media. Go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/ and carefully follow the steps at that location to download, verify and create the Windows 10 install media. When you download the install media you can put it on a DVD (ISO image) or a "clean" USB flash drive (minimum of 8GB). I prefer the USB drive route as it is less grief later. For the most part you are now done with getting the installation file. At this point I suggest you fully back up your existing drive and search for all the various media disks to install your existing applications which will likely be lost or become inoperative. Having said that, during the installation process you are presented with an options to "clean install" and something called "update" (or "upgrade") and a description that reads (more or less) that it keeps your old applications, files, etc. I recently upgraded a Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine using the update/upgrade option, the one that keeps the old stuff, and it worked amazingly well.

Run the setup.exe file on the flash drive or utilize the other options, depending on your choice of media.

They pushing it hard

It's not surprising that Microsoft still lets do this free update. They were pushing W10 very hard from the beginning, forcing it at users. But there is still a lot of older Windows version out there, and Microsoft was legally told to stop forcing update on users. Hence still open way to update from Windows 7

I still run Win 7. It's on a Virtual Machine on my MacBook. I have no use for Win 10 and barely tolerate Win 7. I only use it for Delorme Street Atlas. It was never ported for any other OS than Windows. It's a 2015 Version, the last produced when Garmin bought them out. When that no longer is useful, I'll remove the Windows machine and no longer have any use for Windows.

World would be better off without Windows and Walmart.

I worked on main frames until Unix came along & loved Unix. I have Win 10 at home and can't believe how bad it is. I won't use Apple anything and never will. Walmart is just like Windows, both are terrible. I worked on Walmart computers and know that their inventory system can keep up with anything but they refuse to let it order because the store profits are more important.

DUH! That is what it is all about, isn't it? No profit, no store, no work for you. Personally, I like Windows, most of the time. For what you get and what they have to deal with 3rd party vendors and stupid people, it might be surprising that it works at all, but it isn't bad, just complex. There isn't a piece of s/w that is perfect. Linux when I am feeling adventurous or for my RPi, Apple, mostly never.
