Upgraded Easily

Took about a little more than an hour and was without snags.

My first surprise is that Windows 10 removed a partition that I created for many data files I wanted to keep separate.....well so much for that rolleyes Fortunately , no files were lost ...just relocated.

Most apps were transferred. So far I have noticed only POI loader was omitted. I'm tracking down the valid sox.exe version to install and eliminate each item/discrepancy as they arise.

After my original comments

After my original comments about having to reinstall Avast the system began acting really flaky, so I wiped the hard drive completely and did a clean install. Even the clean install did not go 100% smoothly. The issues that cropped up for me after the clean install were these.

1. Windows 10 would not recognize when a SD card was inserted into the card slot. (Resolved with the Windows 10 Hardware Troubleshooter.)
2. The Wireless card in my laptop is capable of both WiFi and Bluetooth, however Windows 10 removed the Bluetooth software due to compatibility issues. While updated Bluetooth drivers exist, in order for them to install the Bluetooth module needs to be detected. Since it cannot be detected, it's currently impossible to install updated drivers.

My Lightroom 5.7.1 (the latest version) and my ancient Photoshop 7.0.1 work well with Windows 10.

wi fi win 10

well I did a clean install with one of my putters and an upgrade with two others , the one that surprised me was the one with the old wi fi card it worked fine so far no glitches in anything. the wife is looking at my puter trying to decide whether or not to upgrade , I did have to update my Kaspersky to the 2016 ver but even that went well it installed and picked up my serial and I still have four months on it.
all are activated !
all my steam game work !
the edge browser take a little time to get it where you want it
favorites and favorites bar set up, but it seems to be faster !
the start up screen boots up faster !
so far I'm happy with it !

I wonder if the problem upgrading HP units is the operating system you have now, I assume it's Windows 7.
Since members Rookie 8155 and t923347 both upgraded from Windows 8.1 without issues, maybe Windows 7 on HP's is not liking the upgrade.

Bluetooth Works

I figured out how to get my Bluetooth working, but it's easy to see why Microsoft said the software wasn't compatible. The Bluetooth button in the Notification sidebar doesn't shut Bluetooth off, but shuts it down completely. Naturally, this means the Bluetooth adapter is completely removed from the Device Manager.

Norton Ghost failure

I did the official W10 upgrade on our older W7 desktop last night, and things went quite well. However, Norton Ghost 15 now reports that it's in 30 day Free Trial mode, and will not accept my license key. Everything else seems to work fine. This Ghost issue is highly annoying, since the software runs just fine in 'trial' mode and they are refusing to fix the license issue. Nothing wrong with the software, they just won't accept the license key any more.

Soooo, time to switch. I've heard good things about Acronis. Anyone else use this? I have two distinct needs;

1. Make an exact bootable clone from one hard drive to another.
2. Make an exact bootable clone backup to a USB backup drive with a CD/DVD or USB boot disk in case of catastrophic boot failure.

There are plenty of routine file backup options out there, I don't need any help with that. Ghost has been my gold standard for making perfect bootable clone backups and/or migrating everything to a new hard drive for years. And if Norton wants to play hardball over licensing, it's time to find a replacement.

Windows 10 put out a notice for the license not working

I can not find the notice now but it said something like this:

Windows 10 can not be activated with your Windows 7 or 8.1 key.
The windows 10 comes with it's own key.
Microsoft is over run with right now.
When you install Windows 10 and it asked for a key go to the left bottom corner of that screen and click on activate later or something about later. It said be paitent as Windows 10 will update it's own key. It may take several days as there servers are very busy now.

Just remember if you had a legit copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 the Windows 10 install will get it's own key. It just may take a few days.

It also said you have to upgrade to the version you already had. If you had a starter or home then you can not use the Pro version.
If you had a Pro you can not use the home.

I will keep looking for the notice and will edit if I find it.

Be sure and use a new Windows 10 download for each machine.

I have used Acronix for years and currently have the newest version running on my Windows 10 laptop. The software has many features including one called Clone Disk which I believe is what your looking for in your 2 points above. The clone can be made to another hard disk or to a USB backup.

Acronis also has a feature which allows you to create a bootable DVD. I have used this. It may also allow for a bootable USB disk but I have never attempted that so I can't be sure.

Wow they are really pushing this

Started the computer this morning and a big popup "Reserve your copy of Win 10 today"!!!

Windows 10/Windows Update Error/Failure: Fixed! (maybe)

Another laptop in the family has been attempting to download the Windows 10 update since the release last week and has shown multiple failures in the Windows Update history since. (error codes with them are well documented on the web out there since the release) However, It also shows -many- other updates which have downloaded and installed fine. I decided to just leave this laptop alone on the theory some have put out there that windows is downloading all the drivers the laptop needs and when everything is ready the actual Windows 10 download will succeed. This seems to be the case for me here. Windows Update is now telling me "I'm ready!" grin however I'm going to wait for a while because rumor is W10SP1 is not that far away. I have disabled Windows Update automatic install for now and will watch with interest to see if the updates keep arriving for the next few days since I suspect they are really misc driver updates coming in from the vendors out there. My other Laptop with Windows Update set to "auto everything" went ahead and started the Win10 upgrade even though I specified a date several days out. I think shutting down and re-starting triggered it as when it came back up the W10 update started on it's own.

I checked through everything and all seemed well/functional. Clicking on the "more details" link just took me to a generic Kaspersky website with nothing specific.

I also have been using Acronis for years, it's my most treasured software. Over the years I have literally restored saved images at least 500 times and never once had an issue that it didn't restore the PC to EXACTLY the way it was when I created the image. I ALWAYS create an image before installing any new software or updates, this way if a problem arises i can restore the image and there will be no traces of the software or updates.

I also only use a bootable DVD to restore images that you can create when you install Acronis on your PC. Or you can restore directly from Windows through the program, using that method it will tell you to reboot to begin the restore.

I also never used a USB stick, only the DVD but I'm sure it will work. The only thing I believe you would need to do is check your Bios settings. If you want to boot to a DVD make sure that it's first on the list of bootable devices, then the hard drive. For the USB stick you would need to change the Bios for the USB stick to make that the first in the boot order.

Checking closer on their website on the topic, it appears the limitations are mainly with the their Internet Security suite. I have plain old Kaspersky Anti Virus. Seeing their disclaimer though gave me some concern and was one of the reasons I decided to roll back to W8 until the promised Kaspersky updates and patched due in early September.

How to read Windows (10) Keys

I upgraded my Win 7 laptop to 10 over the weekend. Like other in-place upgraders, I was never prompted to enter product keys during the upgrade. My Windows 10 laptop is now ACTIVATED.

I used the following script to read the (new) Windows 10 product keys from Windows 10 registry. I'm not the coder. I just copied and pasted it from another site (howtogeek.com).

I've compared the (new) product keys obtained from the registry with the keys written on my Windows 7 COA. They're different. However, I have not really tested it by reinstalling Windows 10 from scratch and using that new keys when prompted. That would be my next test but I'm currently too lazy to do that.

Copy the following script and paste it into Notepad. Save it as a file with VBS extension. If Windows adds TXT at the end of the file, delete that extension. Now, double click the VBS file. Write down the product keys shown on the display.

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))

Function ConvertToKey(Key)
Const KeyOffset = 52
i = 28
Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789"
Do
Cur = 0
x = 14
Do
Cur = Cur * 256
Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur
Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255
Cur = Cur Mod 24
x = x -1
Loop While x >= 0
i = i -1
KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput
If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then
i = i -1
KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput
End If
Loop While i >= 0
ConvertToKey = KeyOutput
End Function

johnc, Symantec may be doing you a favor by not accepting your Norton Ghost license code after upgrading to Win10. An imaging program is only good if it's 100% reliable. I'd gently recommend that it's time to bite the bullet and find a different imaging program that's certified to work with Win10. Sorry. This kind of thing can happen with older software or hardware drivers when upgrading an OS. An annoyance, possibly an unwanted expense, I'm sure, but considering what imaging software is for, I wouldn't mess around with trying to shoehorn in a workaround and make Ghost work when Symantec no longer supports it.

I have to say that IMO Microsoft has done well in this respect as well as delivering a constant stream of new driver updates (via daily Windows Update deliveries) to address issues reported early on in the release. Two that come to mind are card reader drivers and misc. video drivers, specifically related to widely reported issues with dedicated Nvidia graphics cards. I was aware of both issues and was worried about them and Windows Update delivered a new card-reader early on which I installed. For the latter, my Nvidia GForce card worked fine upon startup with windows 10 and I strongly believe the updated driver was delivered along with the many others directly via windows update. When the laptop came back up, it was one of the first things I checked. The Nvidia control panel showed I had the latest driver. I do have it set for auto-updates, but can't figure when it had the time to do it. I therefore believe it may have arrived earlier and I didn't notice, or perhaps may have been included in the actual Win10 installation.

I have been through all the Microsoft upgrades since MS-DOS (yeah...: now my picture above makes sense, right?) shock and generally, they have been a multi-day mess to deal with: residual glitches and world-wide searches for new drivers to get things working again that went on for months. This one was pretty easy to deal with by comparison.

The problem I have is two of my apps cost over $8000 retail and to reload them means reactivating and that is where the expense is. The keys are tied to the PC and perhaps to the OS, I'll have to call and check.

Ghost/Win 10

johnc, Symantec may be doing you a favor by not accepting your Norton Ghost license code after upgrading to Win10.

I have no issue with older software that is no longer compatible with newer OS's. I have purchased upgrades numerous times over the years as required by numerous OS upgrades. Fact of Life.

What annoys me here is that the software does in fact run just fine. They are saying that since it is a discontinued product, they are refusing to recognize the license any longer.

No problem. Time to purchase new software. Only this time it will be from somewhere else.

I'll have to try it - thanks.

I don't get it. Would you be happier if they give you a new key so you can run the software? Just because it runs fine doesn't mean it is 100% functional. Here's what I mean:

I use a very old Norton Ghost product (I can't remember the version) to clone SATA HDs. I can boot off floppy drive and clone (or create image files) successfully but that's pretty much it. The clone disk is not bootable, not usable.

I'm Still Checking It Out

I've been using the Technical Previews since February, and was out of town last week, so had to wait until I returned to update.

So far, it's been running pretty smoothly, but I still have a lot of apps that I haven't had a chance to test yet.

Time will tell...

I had a similar issue with Symantec several years ago on a piece of their Norton Suite. They had the Password Manager as a standalone module which could have been purchased separately. When that module reached its 3rd anniversary (200x - 200y) they issued an update which stopped the package from being accessed. No warnings, nothings. All of a sudden my passwords were locked in their vault and the ransom payment was a new version of a suite of software which was way more expensive than the cost of the Password Manager. Stopped buying Symantec software because of it. I run their security suite right now, only because I can get it from my ISP as part of their service but, actually pay them money for the same? No way!

Wait the year...

When any major OS release fisrt comes out, there are always installation problems and serious bugs to be worked out. The best time to upgrade is just before the next release when all the issues are resolved and all the minor updates and service packs have been released. In this case, I can't see why anyone wouldn't just wait out the year for the free upgrade...

As I understand it, there

As I understand it, there are no further "releases". All updates will be just automatic incremental updates as needed. So, there won't be a Win10 SP!. Just download and install Win10, then let the updates happen.

Well, there will be SP's and hotfixes through Windows Update, just the intent is for them to be applied automatically. I don't know if they'll be an option to turn that off the way there is now. But in any case, the maturity of the upgrade process and the OS itself will be much further along in a year...

The default is for automatic updates, but the option of downloading, then asking you to start the update is there. I like the "request to start" option since I'd like to know when updates are being offered and how many are offered over time.

If you go to the notification icon located right by the time setting on lower right corner.Click on it and select all settings,update and security then windows update and click on it.There you can select check for updates and right below that is advance options.Click on advace options and you will see the changes you can make.

Note.You will see privacy along the way .You may want to go through that just to see what you may want to stop.
