I set mine to only use sites on my network. I haven't seen much CPU use even before I made that change over the weekend.

Correct. But can you

Correct.

But can you imagine the millions of people out there without the knowledge of "how this stuff works"? These are the people, and their computèrs, MS is going to use without their knowledge.

Update Settings

Yes, multiple sites host downloads. Do you want your machine running at 35% cpu & acting as a file server? I ihink not. I wonder where that clause is in the MS agreement?

My point is, your personal firewall should have prevented that. Of course W10 has its own version of a firewall...right?

It's in the Advanced section of the updates settings.

Processor Power

Most people wont notice if the processor is at 50% or more as long as it does what they want. Most of the computers spend their entire life running less than 50%, that is a lot of wasted processing power that is never missed. Right now my 4 cores are running below 10%.

Has anyone found a way to print other than in a program? Right click doesn't work any longer.

Win 10 or Edge?

Are you referring to Windows 10 in general or to the Edge browser? With Edge, you need to click the three horiz dots in the upper right hand corner to find and click the Print option.

For me, Edge is still enough of a work-in-progress that I generally use Chrome for my browsing in Win 10. I do like some features of Edge and will switch to it when it offers the features of other browsers. With Chrome or the Win 10 alternate of Internet Explorer, the right-click printing is as it was pre-Win-10.

You can try Control+P also.

I find that in edge some options are whited out when hitting the three dots. Control P doesn't work sometimes as well. I suppose 10 needs work.

Windows 10

It seems to be faster in some respects. I like not having the clock show up every time my finger gets near the right edge of my touch pad. Edge is supposed to be faster than IE, comparable to others. Edge doesn't accept add-ons and has pop-ups, So I won't use it yet.

edge browser

well my home page was hijacked in the edge browser neither malware bytes or Kaspersky internet security picked up on it.
after searching and finding out ms didn't have an answer to remove it because it was something new oboy a lot of help they are . so off to google I go finally found there were quite a few people bit with this ! I found a couple of answers to get rid of it, first create a restore point after you install win 10 and get it the way you want it. restore clears all the temp caches when restore is used . second was if your home page is hijacked when starting edge browser hit control and t fast multiple times
and new tabs will open turn off the offending tab by clicking the x in the corner, the in the blank tab go to the upper right corner and click on the 3 little dots and go to settings and clear the temp cache files and then reboot. and you should be clear . also it was a game page where I picked it up ! I just went to "major geeks" for a look at some new utility apps
and my home page was hijacked again with the "are you sure you want to leave this web page" you have 2 choices click on it or ctrl alt delete and task manager and end task. but when starting edge up again your back at the offending page !!

Well, there will be SP's and hotfixes through Windows Update, just the intent is for them to be applied automatically. I don't know if they'll be an option to turn that off the way there is now. But in any case, the maturity of the upgrade process and the OS itself will be much further along in a year...

If you go to the notification icon located right by the time setting on lower right corner.Click on it and select all settings, update and security then windows update and click on it.There you can select check for updates and right below that is advance options.Click on advace options and you will see the changes you can make.

Note. You will see privacy along the way. You may want to go through that just to see what you may want to stop.

Thanks for the info -- so it looks like the same options for Windows Update as exist now...

As with every new version of Windows, they just move the options around to new hidden locations to give you those wonderful frustrations of a new learning curve. Add that to the blown upgrade installations, hardware issues, all the new "features" nobody asked for that default to being on, and the accompanied new security holes they present, and you have yourself a typical Windows launch.

By the way, has anyone figured out how to get around the "Enterprise" edition free upgrade restriction?

One of the new “features” in Windows 10 is something called “Wi-Fi Sense”. Its goal is to make using wireless networks easier, particularly among friends.
Unfortunately, it’s also raised a number of privacy concerns.
To top it off, it’s enabled by default.

You do not have to use Edge as Internet Explorer 11 should have been installed as part of the Windows 10 update. Just open the "all programs" list in the bottom left corner of the Start Screen and select W - Windows Accessories - Internet Explorer.

You can run it from there or right click on the Internet Explorer entry which allows you to pin the program to the Start Screen or the Taskbar.

Checked Windows updates just now and there are three available Went ahead and forced the updates. This may fixed your problem.

It does give you the option

Go here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation...

and download the Windows 10 media creation tool.

Run the tool and select "upgrade this PC" to upgrade in place or select "Create installation media for another PC" to create installation media for a fresh installation.

Interesting

Interesting. Makes me thankful I've never shared my wifi password with anyone, ever. That's why most routers have a "guest" account.

I had read about this "feature" elsewhere, and it was one of the first things I turned off when I installed windows 10 last week on a seldom-used laptop.

WiFi Sense

So you end up automatically sharing your password with any of the folks you are friends with on Facebook? And if you share your wifi password with a visiting friend, they automatically share your password with all of their Facebook friends? That seems like a fundamentally flawed concept. Thanks for the heads up!

P.S. The idea that MS is using my PC's processing power and my internet bandwidth [$] to boost their bottom line sounds sketchy at best. Like they say, no such thing as a free [operating system].

Suddenly linux is looking like a good option!

Windows 10

Upgraded my laptop to Windows 10 with no problem. Since Windows 10 no longer includes Media Center I cant upgrade the other computers since they use it to watch TV with a cable card tuner. If it wasnt for that all computers would be upgraded.

this is becoming ridiculous

With every passing day this Windows 10 looks more and more ridiculous. Make me less and less worried, that none of my computers is qualifying for this "improvement". So my computer will be used as host by Microsoft to ease theirs servers load? And they won't even ask about my permission? What next? Computer with Windows installed will become property of Microsoft?

A quick search shows many folks having this problem, but no universal fix. May be related to the fact that Windows does not include any built in support for a CD drive. You may have to wait for the driver to come from your hardware manufacturer. HP seems to be one of the more common returns on the web when searching.

Settings

The option to turn off many things has been made available in Windows 10.You don't have to be a computer wiz to do them. Simple way is just to click on the notification panel located lower right of screen by time settings.Click all settings then click on privacy and go down the list and if you don't like turn it off.

WIFI sharing can be found by clicking All Settings,Network and Internet,Wifi, scroll near bottom and click Manage WIFI Settings and turn the two listed items off.

You can also search Google for things to turn off and and you will find deatail instructions example http://goo.gl/wWH70L

See, this is what I don't get. You keep harping on the fact that Windows 10 is free as if it's a bad thing. You're right that the majority of people who are upgrading to Windows 10 simply do not care that they are sending their information to Microsoft. Hell, the only way Cortana, Siri, and Google Now work is by getting information from you. That's because they are not simply voice-enabled search engines.

I'm tech savvy. While I do have privacy options set on my smartphone, have privacy options set in Windows 10, and minimize my presence on Facebook as much as possible, the fact remains that information about me is out there. It's a fact of life in the 21st Century, and I found that I simply don't care. It doesn't impact my life, and to me at least, the benefits outweigh the liabilities.

What you fail to realize is that same data was being collected in every version of Windows since XP. So your information is out there too. It's clear to everyone that you don't like Windows 10. Your continued spreading of fear, uncertainty, and doubt about it permeates every single post. So why aren't you running Linux?

My comments are not about

My comments are not about the information gathering. That's a done deal in this age.

My contention is that MS has made a first step to take over your computer & network to share as they see fit.

If you can't see that, then we will have to disagree.

And as long as I earn a modest income in the PC & small network arena, I can't rely on Linux, or anything other than MS OS.

If I was a real "doomer" then I would have to rant that Skynet will become aware soon.

--
I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

I disagree

If people would stop mashing the "Express" button, they'd find they have granular control over what their computer does, and how it operates.

Most people tend to treat their computer like an appliance; the equivalent of a blender or toaster. No real skill or knowledge required.

Mind you, people treat their cars like that as well...

You sound like Chicken Little with every post you make, proclaiming the sky is falling. That is irritating, and it adds nothing to the discussion. Especially after many people on this thread have mentioned tweaking settings either just before starting to use Windows 10, or shortly thereafter.

Microsoft hasn't made any "first steps" to take over your computer. If you bothered to look at the settings in Windows 10 you would see that a) the sharing options can be disabled, and b) you have a great deal of control over your privacy. However, the fact you can enable privacy options in Windows 10, compared to Android, where that stuff is not available without rooting and installing a third party app, is simply lost upon you.

So no, I don't agree at all. Your comments are nothing more than FUD, and I'm frankly tired of hearing about it. If you want to rant and rave about it, make your own thread so I can perpetually skip it.

Win 10 OK...Linux GREAT

I updated my 4 year old Sony VAIO laptop from Win 7 to 10 and had problems develop after about a week. Mainly 10 does not support "legacy" video cards so I had to manually install the ATI/AMD video drivers for WIN 8.1...works OK now but what a pain. Only use Windows to access iTunes and to update my Garmin Nuvi. Everything else I do in Linux (my computer dual-boots Win 10 or Linux). Right now using Debian 8 but also like openSuSE. At work use Debian inside VirtalBox on a Mac mini. Never had problems with any version of Linux, but never a smooth ride with Windows. Just my two cents.

.

I had to update my AMD Radeon HD drivers as well. So what? It wasn't a 'pain' at all. 3 minutes to DL, install, and reboot.

People complain about installing a driver, and then turn around and complain when MS does it for them. They say it's 'losing control' on updates. Really?

What a first world problem, when this is a huge inconvenience.

@KenSny

Why is there venom? Here's why!

This thread is for discussion on Windows 10, not for you to frequently jump onto your soapbox and rail about your discontent with it. Seriously, we get it. We all get it. The first couple of times your bulls#!^ was amusing, but you've gone long past that and have now hit trolling. Now ordinarily, I don't feed trolls, but in this case I'm making one hell of an exception, because you've damn well pissed me off, and right at this moment I don't give a s#!^ what happens to me on this forum.

Windows 10 is intended to be a universal OS, usable on PCs, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Android is a smartphone OS that can be installed on PCs and laptops but is most frequently found on tablets and smartphones. Windows 10 actually allows you to tinker with its privacy settings. Android does not, unless you root, and either install a custom app such as App Ops, or install a custom ROM with that functionality included. Thus in regard to privacy Windows 10 is actually better at protecting the user's privacy than Android, because it gives the user the option to adjust the settings.

Whether anyone bothers to look for the settings in Windows 10 is none of your concern, and it certainly isn't any of mine. If people cannot be bothered to take the time to learn about the software they install, then it most certainly is too bad for them. They have no one to blame but themselves, period.

The only true pain is if the machine you install Windows 10 on has an incompatible driver, and even then in a lot of cases it's easily resolved with a Windows 8 or 8.1 version of the driver. My main laptop however was not so easily resolved, in that it took me three days of searching online for a solution for my bluetooth driver.

I already mentioned that I had gotten the bluetooth driver installed and working, but I didn't explain how I did it. The laptop in question never had Windows 8 or 8.1 as an option for it, so I had to use the Windows 7 drivers I had available. However, because of the driver not being compatible, the installer package refused to proceed. The solution was a little convoluted, but involved removing the digital signature from one of the installation files in the installer package so Windows would install the driver.

Maybe Consider a Dual Boot

It is possible that you can have both Widows 10 and Windows 7 on your PC at the same time. At bootup, a menu will appear so you can select which Operating System you want to boot.

BEWARE this should NOT BE DONE if you are not computer savvy since it's a complicated procedure for most people. You also will need a hard drive large enough to handle both operating systems.

The link below instructs you how to do it, however, it does not mention how you can uninstall Windows 10 should you need to.

I'm not suggesting anyone do this, it's just an option for those smart enough and willing to do it.

Ignoring your rant.

Here's why I care and it seems a lot of others do also who are in the day-to-day business of PC and Network management. Check the web if you don't believe me. We don't sit home in our computer nest and say to heck with everyone else's concerns, we have to know, and plan for the implications of EVERY new OS and how it impacts the bottom line. You do not it seems. We have to make DARN sure that there is no risk to the company network and data AND that includes anyone with a personal device that is allowed on the network.

At this point in the W10 run of less than 30 days in the public's hands, I am glad that MS has not yet begun to push it into the Enterprise arena. Maybe they are in limited areas, but I have yet to hear it.

We have seen the way W8 played in the enterprise sector, and a lot of us don't like it. W10 is a LOT worse than W8 ever was/is.

So rant on if you want, it will make no difference to me. I hope you have a better day than you seemed to have yesterday.

I now have Windows 10 on Netbook (Windows 7) and Vista PC

I do so love the Windows 10 platform. Both computers run a lot faster. I love Edge for the reading option but when I need to I still have to use Internet Explorer. IE is used mainly for Grand Kids and Games.

I have not added Norton to them yet. I hope to get to it this week.

When I installed Windows 10 and it was setting up my computer it said keep the default options or change them, or you can change them any time afterwords. I always want to see what the default option is so I clicked on change options. I then saw that you can share internet. I unchecked every thing that shared anything about my internet. I did some other changes but (getting old) I don't remember what they were.

I am going to check this evening to make sure all the optional settings I did are still there.

I will not upgrade my main Window 7 PC. I love the Word and Excel and use it a lot. I don't want to loose it. When I buy a new computer I am sure I will have to buy Word and Excel but until then I will keep what I have. Did so want to upgrade this PC but maybe a new one is in the marked soon.
