Yes drivers were the main issue until the reset wiped out Window

The drivers on my Graphic Card were outdated. The company is not making new ones and hasn't since 2013. Windows tried to make a driver for my card to work on Windows 10 but it did not work correctly. After my downloading and trying some drivers I did a reset of Windows 10 and it completely wiped out my operating system. I decided it was not worth it and put the original Operating system back on the computer and after 6 days of working through the many updates and updates for the updates since 2007 the computer is now working great... Should have listened to my husband and saved me time... Although now I have a clean computer that works better than it did before Windows 10.

Alternatives?

Anyone tried an alternative operating system, like Ubuntu?

I haven't played with Linux

I haven't played with Linux in years, except Android of course. Ubuntu was a nice system then and there were some nice free Office applications. It is a bit of a learning curve but once the applications are all installed there should be no issues as long as you can find compatible drivers. I never did get the one notebook to use wifi on Ubuntu but the wired connection worked fine.

Just read that Windows 10 has been downloaded

Just read that Windows 10 was downloaded on Windows 7 even if you did not request it. I looked in hidden folders and have the files they talked about. ($Windows.~BT, $Windows.WS) They were downloaded September 4, 2015.

Downloaded in the background

Yes, the files were supposed to be downloaded in the background, however it's up to you if you want to install them.
If you don't want it and it asks just say no.
If you never want to install it just delete the files.

Tried few Linux

In years gone by I tried to see if I can get used to Linux. Tried Red Hat, Corel and another one or two.

It was a harder learning curve than DOS was. For instance, the constant mount or unmount this or that was a PIA.

BTW: I can still operate in DOS, though not too often required nowadays.

Windows 10

I downloaded 10 a couple of weeks ago and it generally works fine. Though I had an error message pop up very frequently.

It said:
(?) Reconnect your drive.
Your file history drive was disconnected for too long. Reconnect it and then tap or click to keep saving copies of your files.

It apparently refers to someone using a USB stick or USB external drive for backup, which I do not. But I have my HDD partitioned into a C:\ and E:\ drive and that I think caused the error message.

To get rid of this you need to get into "Control Panel" and search for "File History", then turn OFF File history.

Until I found this it was driving me nuts.

I could not stand the start up on Windows 8.1 and had installed something called "Classic Start 8" which resembles the OLD Windows start and it carried over to Windows 10 too.

I do know I don't want Windows 10. I hate to delete something that is included with the files that may be needed for something else.

If I leave it will Microsoft not sneak and put Windows 10 on my PC at a later date? Will it hurt nothing to leave it alone?

I have been using a program "Revo uninstaller" for years and it is FAR better than a programs built in or Windows uninstall options ! They leave stuff behind that REVO does find and remove!

It's back

My previous post
"EDIT:
I found that update KB3035583 put the Windows 10 Icon on my computer so I deleted the update and the icon is gone. Will have to see if my Windows Updater starts working again."

Well it's back.....

I don't remember if I hid this update or not. I will delete it then recheck for updates and when it is ready for download I will hide it and see if it works this time.

EDIT:
I delete the update, re ran updater and it was back in the offer to install. I then hid it. Will see what happens, for now it is gone.

@mgarledge

you need to uninstall the update to get rid of the icon. You then need to (as you did) hide the update so MS doesn't give it to you again.

I should have said uninstalled

When I said delete I was talking about "uninstall".
I did not make myself clear.

I too was skeptical about

I too was skeptical about win 10, and have always hated microsoft. I was pissed off that windows update slipped in the update on my win 8 machine, but finally installed win 7 on a spare disk and then upgraded to win 10 and was surprised. I have win 8 plus pokki because of the start menu. Win 10 start works nice. The free upgrade is available for only 1 year to those with win 7/8.
Go for win 10 while you can, but turn off all the privacy features....

win 10

win 10 is ok if you can tweek it, right now my computer boots straight to the desktop with no sign in ! I'm also using startisback + which gives it that win 7 feel, the reason I removed the sign in is that I'm the only one using this computer . now I don't care for the edge browser . it has a few bugs I don't like possibly after a few bug fixes it will be ok but for now internet explorer is fine . as for malware and virus protection I'm using Malwarebytes and Kaspersky internet security another thing I found windows defender was running hidden in the back ground so I had to turn that off because to many scanners running slow your computer down and the only way to do it was in the registry, I tried turning it off in the control panel and it just restarts after a reboot , so its as close to win 7 as I can get and I'm comfortable with it now !

Two days trying to get my Norton on it

I have Norton 360 and it is good until 2016. I have a space left for my Netbook. I always had it on my Netbook before Windows 10.
I spent two days trying to install it on Windows 10. Norton 360 is not compatible with Windows 10, only the new version of Norton is compatable and I am not spending more money to buy another Norton when I already have one and it has several months left on it. I installed the new version thinking I could put my key in it but it will only let me do a 30 day trial and will not take the 360 key. I gave up and let Windows 10 Defender take care of it... Don't know how good the Defender is.
The only thing the Netbook is used for is the grandkids to play games so hopefully it will be ok.

Windows 10

mgarledge, get rid of NORTON's, I've been using AVG for years and I think it is far better than Norton's. I do not know if Mcafee is still around, but it was/is the pits as well.
======================================

I downloaded Windows 10 onto my NEW 64 bit laptop to update from Windows 8 a few weeks ago without a problem. The only thing I did not like is the way you have to get into your programs. I found a program which I used to give me the Windows 7 type start. It is "Classic Start 8", free to download and use.

Yesterday I noticed that on my older Windows 7 - 64 bit the update icon let me update to indows 10 as well. It installed without any problems.

I do see though that Microsoft has changed the start-up page to be more what it used to look like. But I still find it easier to use the "Classic Start 8" program. It's much easier to get into the Control panel, Windows Explorer, Regedit, MSconfig, etc.

I'll second that

Norton and McAfee are both bloatware, IMHO.

AVG and Avira are good free options. I've always been partial to Avira myself but the free version nags you to upgrade to the paid version after each signature update.

ClamAV is another free and open-source option.

Windows 10

Finally upgraded my 3 computers to windows 10.

1. Extra desktop in spare bedroom running fine.

2. My main computer was working fine then began to boot very very slow after a month or so. Did some research and found that if I disconnected my 2 extra internal hard drives and then booted it was once again fast. Plugged the extra hard drives bank in and for now it is still booting fast. Everything normal.

3. Older HP laptop worked fine on its own but we only use it to connect to the large screen HD TV. Attached HDMI cable as always and it would not show up on the TV. Attempted many many video driver changes and could not get it to work. Reinstalled a system image of Windows 7 and everything is back to normal.

In conclusion, I like Windows 10, but at least for me it does nothing better than Windows 7. Other than having the newest operating system, I should have just stayed with Windows 7 which was always rock solid for me.

Windows 10 Activation

We now can use Windows 7 and 8 product keys to activate Windows 10.

http://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2015/10/12/announ...

Device activation improvements:

If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup.

Me too. I'll wait awhile.

I guess you have to be a windows insider member to take advantage of eligible keys to work for activation in Windows 10.

Just updated our little Acer Aspire One Netbook...

to Windows 10 Pro. This breathed new life into the little netbook. It's still not as fast as a newer system with better hardware would be, but it only has the Intel Atom N270 1.6 GHz processor with 2 GB of memory. Noticeably faster than Windows 7, especially on boot up.

Absolutely no compatibility issues that we've seen so far. It took a day to upgrade so if you have a unit you're thinking about running the upgrade on....be patient smile

That's my 2 cents worth!

Possibly

Windows Update

I have my windows Update set to download but let me decide when to install them.

Windows is ignoring this settings. It downloads and installs them and when I turn the computer off it configures them.

I don't want Windows 10 and never will. I guess I will just have to be careful and not click this box forever.........
