It will be sometime after I tell Lifetime Map Updater to manually check and I see here that it's really available... grin

Good idea

However, the $10 shipping charge for the DVD is cheaper than the cost of driving to McD, and much faster.

There is only 1 DVD version per year, but that is sufficient for me.

Park yourself at a McDonald's and use their WiFi. You can do the download using their WiFi which is faster than Starbuck's (because there aren't as many people hogging bandwidth). For the price of a Coke or a coffee it's a good deal. Libraries have limited bandwidth available because of the number of users, the same with sandwich shops like Panera.

I guess I would feel more positive about map updating if I didn't look at it with so much trepidation. From past experiences, all negative, I would rather have root canal. But perhaps things will be different with garmin express handling the interface now.....right. I have never updated maps on any of my five older nuvis, preferring to buy a new, updated model every three years or so. So, let's hear about all you guy's experiences, then I'll decide, since I just got the 2797 LMT. Good Luck

I'm sure that a search on this site, and others, will fill you in on the many problems using Garmin Express for map updates. Hopefully Garmin has these problems fixed for the upcoming map release but I'll let you guys try it out as I'm sticking with MapUpdater as it's always worked for me.

Ditto on staying away from Express. I never have a problem doing it the old way and get my copy of Mapsource updated at the same time. Not sure why we need to fix something that's not broken with a new program.

Not correct.

If you have an app that stores full maps on the device, cellular data is not needed.

I hope one day the meme you assert dies...

Old story

Total load of horses**t. Your statement would be true if the only GPS navigation apps available pulled their maps from the cloud, e.g. Google Navigation or Garmin Streetpilot. A cursory glance at the Play Store reveals otherwise.

Google Play Search Results | Offline GPS Navigation Apps

All the results in that search store their maps on the device and are fully capable of address searches without a data connection.

EDIT: Keith beat me to it and was much more nice about it than I was. :)

He said cell reception, not data

gpsomnia wrote:

Well, he did state that he wants it to be compatible without cellular reception, not without cellular data. Both of you addressed the claimed need for cellular data rather than the claimed need cellular reception.

That said, as stated, there are plenty of apps which use GPS data and do not rely on cellular reception to determine location. Indeed, neither cellular data nor cellular reception is necessary.

Personal Choice

I am sure some people prefer using GPS application on their smartphones, but I am still a person who prefers a GPS unit dedicated only for navigation rather than a smartphone.. just like I prefer to take pictures with a DSLR camera rather than smartphone. I am sure many of you will disagree and some might agree, personal choice I would say.. If Google make their GPS unit with their live traffic.. I can't speak for other, but I will buy it right away..

He Said Cell Reception, Not Data...

One needs cell reception to have cellular data... and guess what else is true: A cell phone without a Cellular signal will still have functional GPS as long as the app stores maps on the device.

That notion that a cell phone has to have a cellular connection to work as a GPS... It's still a meme that needs to die...

The fact remains you declared that smartphone GPS is useless without a data plan, and that is demonstrably false. Now, I happen to prefer a dedicated GPS receiver myself, so what exactly is the point you're trying to make? I seem to be missing it.

No clue whatsoever

I don't even understand why my 2595LMT needed 2013.40 even though it already had it (HUH?)

GE?

Were you using Garmin Express which told you to update the already-current map?

Instead, I suggest uninstalling Garmin Express and using GarminMapUpdater next for the very-soon-to-be-released 2014.10 map update and into the future for additional updates:

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={60f574f0-602d-11e2-f3fb-000000000000}

Copy and paste the above link to your browser.

Firmware Update

I just downloaded a new firmware update for my 3597. According to earlier posts, the map update may not be far behind. But nothing yet.

I thank

you for the tip

2597 Sometimes I wonder..."Why is that Frisbee getting bigger?"...and then, it hits me.

Is MapUpdate better?

Is MapUpdater better than Garmin Express?

garmin express

I tried both and I like garmin express better.

I am betting we wont have an update until page 10

Updates

Does anyone actually know what changes between versions ? Be handy if Garmin posted a URL with changes, but then that'd be customer service smile

.

gnsmith wrote:

This is something that has never been offered with map updates. The list would be enormous and Garmin likely only gets the map update itself (no "changelog") from Navteq. Garmin customer service would not even be able to supply such a changelog either...but you can go ahead and try if you wish. mrgreen

Is gas $8/gal where you live?

Seriously? Wow, you must either live in a really isolated area or drive a Sherman tank. I would imagine that 90% of the population lives within 5 miles of a McDonald's.

I agree about the speed, Garmin downloads are big & slow (at least for this cheap DSL customer). That's why I do them overnight.

Not Practical To List Details

gnsmith wrote:

There are probably hundreds, if not thousands of changes to the maps and POI database. Not practical to list. Also, potential customers would then review the changes to see if it is worth buying.

I asked my Garmin unit

On the "Where To" screen of my Garmin GPSr I put "City Navigator 2014.10". It said there are delays on route, and is still recalculating.

What's a "mile"? lol

Friggin Canadian ideas...metric system...every time I cross the border to go into the states I love trying to read the time english measurements instead of the huge metric ones!!!!

Maybe next week

We are running out of May!

.

Much better to wait longer with the possibility of no glitches (is this even possible with Garmin's updaters/map releases?) than to have them re-release the map update because of an "issue".
